  1. Would a towel over the top work? or just over the gaps? When mine smells I do a water change and put the dehumidifier on while im at work and smell is gone.
  2. You could feed it less over a few weeks so it is use to not eating so much and skip days of feeding so you can eventually fast it. Most bigger fish are able to go weeks or a month without food IMO. Ive had my fish go 1 week without food when I didn't have someone to feed them. I don't see why the FE cant go a week without. You could try to get someone to feed it on day five to minimize the days without food.
  3. I had FW Mussels in a goldfish tank as a kid, When i moved out of home they got thrown into a tub at the back of the section with a few rocks, wood, no sand and some plants. 2 years later I was helping to clean up the olds backyard and come across the tub The plants hadn't done so well but there were 3 mussels still alive. I was surprised that they had survived. I put them in the goldfish pond where they could get around.
  4. Its coming on 2years old now, running since the day I got it. and still runs quietly in my room. Like others have said, If they get a little noisy, its time for a clean out and its quiet again.
  5. I have a fluval 405 that is very quiet and I can sleep easily with it in my bedroom. I cant sleep when it gets air in the canister though and I wake up and have to shake in until its gone grrrr. only because I sometimes don't put the rubber seal in properly cleaned after maintenance. otherwise it is very silent, to me the slight hum is unnoticeable.
  6. My tank was litered with them, I put a few clown loaches in there and after a week they are just about gone and there is empty snail shells everywhere.
  7. I would think a sudden temp drop would possibly kill them? But slow changes not so much.
  8. What about this one... Bags not cleaning it when it gets dirty. A house wife fish could be a good idea
  9. some polystyrenes aren't water proof  Just resin and or fibreglass the ply to make it waterproof. You can also get some good waterproof paints and sealers nowadays. but make sure what ever you use is non toxic.
  10. I brought mine about 7-8 months ago @ 10cm and now its close to 30cm I was suprised at how quick they grow too. I know someone who has one (less than 10cm) and has probly only grown a few cm in 3 months because they don't feed it a lot and is kept in a small tank. I keep trying to convince him to give it to me  If I keep pestering him im sure he will give in.
  11. Ottos Neons Discus Apisto? Malawi cichlids
  12. Yes but it is very very heavy and needs a few people to lift depending on the tank size. I drained the water down to 1cm above the substrate. my tank was only 130 odd ltrs though.
  13. How many convicts do you have, What size are they? Do you know the sexes? How many Yellows do you have, What size are they? If there are breeding pairs of convicts and the yellows are too small and too few to handle them then it might not be a very good idea.
  14. Yes, thats what I ment, I wasn't thinking straight that day, used the wrong words
  15. An FX5 would be a good choice for a big filter. You could also consider seting up a sump. this way you could get all the heaters out of the tank and have plenty of room for more filter media etc. Red jewels are not african cichlids so shouldn't realy be with the others. And I can't say I have ever seen my frontosa hunt at night. They always sleep, in my tank, when the lights go out. I have 1cm fry surviving in the tank easily. It has took 2 years for my fronts to get to 15-18cm. Other fish you could add: Neolamprologus Leleupi more Neolamprologus brichardi Julidochromis marlieri Some sort or synodontis, synodontis multipunctatus possibly All these fish go well with fronts IMO and are all from the same lake. What part of the country are you from?
  16. Only way to keep the coral white is taking it out and boiling it and scrubbing it every time it goes brown IMO, Im not sure if it can be prevented. Maybe less time having the lights on would slow the growth. My tank is full of coral rock and is all types of green and browns but I like it because it looks more natural.
  17. I also through in a pack of Brine shrimp or blood worms
  18. That would make a perfect sticky, good find.
  19. Thanks, Ive already figured out whiteworms condition them well. Im now waiting for her to spawn again, Hopefully it won't take too long.
  20. I beleive in leaving the parents with the eggs to do it naturally but if they eat them in their own tank then I will have to remove them and raise them myself I guess. What would be the best way to keep the eggs aerated when they are are in a deep hole in coral rock? Just put a powerhead pointed towards the hole?
  21. Thanks guys, I had a feeling they would be getting in there. I have got 2 leleupi in their own tank now but their eggs are pretty much gone. Hopefully they will continue and I hope I caught the right male.
