  1. cat jumped up on me for a pat and since it was wet i told it where to go so it stood on the keyboard the page i was veiwing became really small so i can no longer read the witing . im using google chrome and have re started it but the website is still really small its only the website i was looking at at the time not fnzas thank god
  2. even if its sending a well rearched letter to pet stores asking them not to sell them on principle maybe a facebook page too
  3. cost wise metal halides may be better for you if you get them from your sparkie mates the bulbs are really cheap on ebay. then also give a nice glittering effect on the substrate i use a 150w on my 5x2x2 with no algae problems (note its a african tank and has no plants to absorb nutrients) perhaps 2x 150w units would be good as they would have no trouble reaching the depth of that tank much more and i reckon co2 would be a must
  4. yep as long as one can not fit in the others mouth you will be right
  5. www.petmart.co.nz has really cheap canister filters and fast postage
  6. im not sure about the different rocks just use ones that you like. a lot of people use aqua-knead it epoxy putty to join rock
  7. a question for you barrie the curing time you stated is that for strength of the join or to be "cured" to be aquarium safe?
  8. to adapt the current drill more holes in the top filter all around the base where the other holes are
  9. just rinse your sponges weekly under tap water no need to dry them out
  10. yep dark room - room lights off, pull curtains etc turn telly off too. i use flash as it brings up more colours in the fish but using the flash you get that reflection to avoid the reflection angle the camera slightly and take a few test photos to check that the reflection isnt showing. (note: it helps to use a tripod when doing this) then you have to get lucky waiting for the right fish to swim by  quite often when you see a few good photos what you dont see are the other 100 photos that were taken as well just to get the 3 or 4 good ones
  11. a bit of diy with that aquaclear u'd have a mean return pump. to clarify the filtration with live rock the live rock is your filter it holds the bateria that converts amonia to nitrite ---> nitrate but because its so porous it has a large surface area that has low or no oxygen and can support anarobic bacteria that convert nitrate. the air powered skimmer is a good idea asthe more pumps and things you have inside your tank the bigger the chance of it getting too hot .though this wont be a problem for a while now i would suggest adding a fan or two to the hood if the lights dont already have one another thing to consider is making an automatic top off system as 33l of water (less by the time you have everything in there) will evaporate very quickly and in such a small volume of water the salinity will swing wildly unless your prepared to do a couple of manual top ups a day. as you are limited ofr space in the rear compartment of your tank i'd suggest making an ATO unit using a battery powered airpump and a float switch from ebay or jaycar the gravity fed ballcock type you can get on ebay will be way too large and require the resevoir to be mounted higher than the tank
  12. what salinity do you keep the tank at? salt water mixed up can appear cloudy if put straight in the tank normally you chuck a airstone or powerhead in the bucket and mix it for 24hrs first to dissolve everything but it would clear in a few days on its own anyway so perhaps not the problem
  13. my friend has a suzuki ignis sport it looks like a nana car but is very zippy plus it has the most amazing handling we went over the port hills in nelson going around the corners so fast without even squeling a tyre my honda would have been sledging at half the speed. from memory the suzuki had a low top end speed it struggled to get over 175 but got there rather quick i think the gearing or the final drive ratio had a lot to do with this . i would say it has a lot of potential as it was stock not even a pod filter also the tyres were just 14inch supercats so handling could be further improved with better tyres
  14. i know how he feels im doing native plant revegetation in the port hills at the moment ive come home wet and cold every day this week and have two more days of it to go
  15. i use a cartrigde type pool filter a pre filter(intex type A) the pump on its bung so its connected inline before my aquis2200 i rinse the filter when i do water changes used two irragation taps so i dont have to worry about water syphoning out when i open it. i replace the filter cartidge completely about every two months they only cost $7.95. looks like this http://www.google.co.nz/imgres?imgurl=h ... s%3Disch:1 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31TG%2BK8VN6L.jpg i also use a 1300lph powerhead in the tank to help the canister filter pressure .the cannister filter is filled with only biological media and has never been opened in nearly two years ive had it
  16. algae rid should be your last resort green algae needs a few things to grow and it will be 1 or more of these in excess causing it 1 sunlight make sure your tank dosent recieve heaps of sun during the day 2 nitrates can cause it so do more regular water changes to keep nutrient levels low in the tank 3 phosphates can also cause it these may naturally be present in your tap water so water changes might not help there is a product called green-x its like a teabag you put it in your filter it lasts several months and removes phophates 4 try the above in that order if that dosent work use algae rid in conjunction with 1-3
  17. if it dosent get much sun dont use broms they are tropical plants try some ferns maybe climbing rata metrosideros carminea its a nice groundcover http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrosideros_carminea
  18. a rem cover by a band called graveworm turned a good song into an epic song
  19. cant seem to find the cri anywhere for any of the glo tubes o0nly information sugessting that life glo has the higher cri . i would say it would be decent enough they peak in red and blue spectra so good for plants and good to bring out colours in some discus. i have a powerglo t8 on my golfish tank but i dont like the pink colour the other tube is a philips graphica which has a very high cri at 98 (out of possible 100) this tubes a bit yellow on its own but combined with the powerglo really brings out the colours of the goldfish and the plastic plants i would probabably go a combination of life glo and power glo so you dont get the pink coloured light so much
  20. with using a skimmer any pump you use will also contribute to heat
  21. what colours in particular are you trying to bring out? if its a range of colurs rather than just mainly red or mainly blue look for a bulb with a high CRI (colour rendition index ) as it will bring up the biggest range of colours
  22. more likely to find it at a specialist electrical supplier try find an osram QT-ECO 1x18-24 230/240 s this is an easy to wire electronic ballast that can run 18 or 24w pl tubes the s on the end is important it stands for short rather than long which is twice the size. you will also need an end cap for the tube
  23. if you did want to have a nano reef you could buy a pl fitting you could fit a 36w bulb in there and get a 14k one or a split 10k/actinic
