  1. the return pump is a fluval 104 and there is a pump with a venturi in the top tank the venturi effect gets the syphon started here and prevented bubbles forming in the top of the syphon the other white tube that goes over the top edge of the tank(not the inlet) is only put like that to hang the syphon on the tank its necessary to have the tube for this type to work however it doesnt have to be bent over the edge of the tank like that
  2. i have a breeding pair in my 5ft african tank when they breed they are agreesive but it only ends up being for about a week as most of the fry get eaten at night once free swimming they just take up half the tank and chase the other fish away if i think they are getting too much i just syphon most of the babies out or get a net and swish them around so the other fish eat them
  3. im a novice compared to others on here if you decide to go with africans you will get addicted too
  4. well you can mix them but you need to be careful of three things 1 size its no good putting something that grows a foot long with something tiny 2 aggression some species are very aggressive and thought needs to be taken as to what other species will handle the aggression or there are some methods of trying to reduce aggression like having more females of a certain fish to spread the aggression around or overstocking so that the fish dont have a chance to find a terretory to defend (common source of aggression) 3 cross breeding and hybridisation are a common occurance in mixed tanks , if you plan to breed cichlids certain species should not be mixed together so cross breeding is reduced note there is always the exception to these rules as for mixing the 3 lakes up most of the fish you get here are from malawi 'mbuna' means rock dwelling so they like lil caves etc compared to peacocks and a few other species that prefer more open water . there are few lake victoria fish availible brown haps would be the one you are most likely to come across . the 1,2,3 above considered they would be fine with malawi fish there are a few tanginika fish availible but i dont really know much about them im sure most of the more common ones would go alright with malawis too one option is to have a male only cichlid tank . in a lot of species its only the male that gets really colourful in this way you can mix a whole heap of species together without hybrids arising and have the next most colourful tank you can have without getting into marine as for tank size that would depend on what you want to get the bigger the tank the more options you have i reckon a 4 foot tank would be a good choice you could probably get away with a 3 foot but you would have a lot less choice when it came to stocking
  5. yes should be fine even with africans are looking at african cichlids? or south american ?
  6. i would say if your not spending much money on goldfish food then the goldfish would do a lot better on tropical flake . some cheap goldfish food is absolute crap
  7. right Mate ring downeys floristry supplies in o'shanessay place near tower junction they will get you some with in the week and would let you buy a small amount if that's what you wanted. i got a decent enough amount for my terrairum for $15. i would give you some but i dont have much left, had it a couple of years now . took me a a long time to find it too its live and its healthy also a good place to wholesale buy your valentines day roses
  8. i made this one the other day http://www.aquariumlife.net/projects/di ... ow/120.asp to connect 2 30l tanks ,works well, silent and can flow a decent amount just using 3/4" pipe for your project use bigger diameter pipe like living arts one i also put a modified plastic air filter box in the corner to use as a surface skimmer and to make the water level higher in the tank
  9. perhaps the damage is done when they are hibernating?
  10. maybe a couple more different male peacocks
  11. the plec looks like a small common plec that will get big quickly
  12. count me in i will drink just about anything
  13. well epoxy is certainly a very permanent way to go ,just an expensive way that may not be necessary i think there may be a difference between normal cement or concrete compared to cemix patch as i can honestly say ive had no problems with ph (ive had to buffer) and i have a considerable amount as my tanks 5ft and the background is very textured sand over epoxy is also very good also i have to say rock solid with the right epoxy. also as far as im aware you wont have a problem with cement as many garden ponds are made from it (and actually strucural rather than just sitting there) and they last many years my4age hasa cement coated poly background i know its been in at least a year perhaps he can say from experience
  14. dont worry bout epoxy if its africans the oph increase with cemix patch is minimal any way you will still have to buffer the tank i just used cemix patch then acylic paint have used epoxy before on other backgrounds and i honestly dont think its worth the effort or the price i cabn also show you what the different effect is using different methods as i have a few different backgrounds here atm
  15. heaps of different male peacocks lots of colour and no cross-breeding

i like the science mentioned before but i have to admit there are many things not fully explained by science and i find homeopathy one of them i also think the vibration theory is another form of science not yet fully understood but being looked into more and more(quantum physics). i know plenty of people that say homepathy has fully worked for them even though it apparently defies common sense. i would be keen to try some of these products one day just the price puts me off some of them
  17. paint the glass on the outside then it wont happen also black paints got to look better than poly
  18. i reckon starters too are the lights not actually staying on but flicking on and off quickly?

sometimes the water leaks out between the beads so may not be good could be worth a trial or try plastic bins from the warehouse
  20. im in belfast if you want to come look at my tanks i will have to clean them first though
  21. my mate has a breeding pair of savinis they are in with a breeding pair of sajicas and some firemouths , kribs got wasted in this tank he has a bns and a few loaches clown kuhli and skunk also some cories which are left alone there are a lot fights between the cichlids though the salvinis are easy the most aggressive fish in his tank
  22. i grew up in motueka my father was a commericial fisherman so i was always out on the boat or down the wharf both my parents were keen gardeners so we had a pond with goldfish really early on, then a few bath tubs axies in one and banded kokopu in the other dad ended up getting a 4 ft tank made up which had goldfish in it for a while before it was changed to coldwater marine and housed 16 seahorses of varying colours and sizes my faverourites were a small red and white striped one and a monster 40cm long peach coloured one we also had a 10cm skate in there and various fish caught in an estuary and brought home the only filtration was a small hang-on-back filter didnt know what a skimmer was lol tank had 50% water changes each week (from the estuary near talleys fisheries-hate to think what was in that water) also worth noting we had a piece of black coral looked like a tree branch (not much coral left in tasman bay now due to dregding) we kept seahorses for over two years and they bred often we never managed to keep any of the young alive though in the end their colours started to fade really badly and we returned them to the sea thinking they were sick. then an aquarium shop opened in riwaka of all places in what used to be a dairy in the middle of no where so the 4ft became tropical freshwater for several years . then 3 years ago after not having fish for years i found a 100l tank at work and got some goldfish now have 5 tanks and a tub outside
