  1. there is all sorts of horror stories of blockages id say having a back-up isnt a silly idea to put it into perspective-- lets asy it blocks your tank will overflow- loss of saltwater could cost a bit to replace if using ASW then any damage done by the spill, then you have your sump running dry depending on the design of your sump this may or may not affect your skimmer and heater but your return pump wont like running dry and may crap out. then say you are at work and your heater is in the sump its a cold day and no heated water is making it to the tank livestock could be affected. and depending how far along you are the cost could be in the thousands. id spend the extra $30 to get another hole drilled and another $25 for extra plumbing just as a precaution
  2. is that so allow a decent amount of silicon to seal it? ive heard the gaskets dont seal that well
  3. http://www.hansenproducts.com/products/thread/STF.htm male tank fitting like the 1 i showed you female has a thread other pipes can be fitted into http://www.hansenproducts.com/products/thread/SFTFT.htm hole size(note the 25mm is not on here for some reason) http://www.hansenproducts.com/tech/thre ... ns/stf.htm
  4. its up higher now and seems to be doing better could i put it a few inches away from the powerhead or is that too much
  5. im in belfast but i dont have any experience shipping fish perhaps pm navarre he may be able to help
  6. if the skimmer section of your sump hold more than 9 inches of water make up a stand for the skimmer if its less you may need to make it taller this may be just a case of replacing the first partion of your bubble trap or you may need to build up the skimmer section as well . if they recommend 9 inches for it , it will work best at 9 inches but may even still work at 7 if well adjusted you really have to have a play round with it first
  7. probably want to clean the pump and venturi line as well . have a play round with it till it works ok mite need adjusting in a few days time as well
  8. thats got to be almost completely dry soil dry it right out in the oven

    Morcs' Juwel

cant you get another juwel light unit to fit in there? it will look better too.
  14. sound good to me but perhaps check with someone if using the sand that has been in freshwater is alrite? i know coral rock absorbs nutrients in freshwater i dont know if sand is the same. and if you plan to use your cannister filter remove all the media first and use it for flow or to add carbon or purigen etc . let the live rock be your biological media. i would also leave the sand out for the time being until the tank is better established as its annoying to clean and will quickly get covered in algae and diatoms
  15. can you take photos ? sometimes top filters like that make micro bubbles these are really tiny bubbles that can attach to the side of the glass and also fish , they are unsightly but harmless . they may appear sparkely as they reflect light
  16. im a metal head but i have to admit cradle of filth is an aqquired taste i love it now the lyrics are quite clever and well researched it has elements of opera and full symphonies in some songs. as for the fast drumming ,it is very talented - do you know how hard it is to drum that fast (double bass using your feet) for an 8 min song. the singer dani filth has the most amazing vocal range ive ever heard even if its not suitable for contemporary music. its like he has 4 different voices
  17. sorry i was unclear i was was talking in terms of its life- when exposed to condensation etc also safty in that way it would be no differtent to an incandescent bulb
  18. i ts no different to any incandescant bulb you have in there
  19. that whole idea is interesting and i never understood it till now . but of course the longer the hose the more resistance you will get so the lower the flow right?
  20. i wouldnt bother with a skimmer since you live so close to the beach just do regular water changes a decent skimmer will cost heaps and theres no point bothering with a cheap one as for cycling you can use live rock and let it cycle the key difference is compared to freshwater is that you become more interested in cultivating anerobic bacteria that break down the nitrate. although live rock could also be expensive and if you are prepared to do regular water changes you can keep the nitrates down and not use live rock but just stuff you find at the beach /rockpools etc and just use a regular type of filter for water movement and aeration and mechanical filtration . a cheap way of cooling is to use fans to increase the evaporation but when you increase the evaporation the water gets saltier quicker this means you will be topping up the tank with freshwater more often to keep the salinity the same . you could just mark a level with a vivid on the tank when you first set it up and keep the water topped up to that or you could get a hydrometer(which isnt terribly accurate and would likely be right out of wack because of the cooler temps) other options include a refractometer (expensive but works well) and an automatic top off system which could either use a small gravity fed ballcock system or more comlex electronic float swithces and pumps. as for substrate while you could use beach sand it has very little biological capacity perhaps use coral sand which will help with buffering and is also a lot more porous
  21. they are great wee fish i had some in tropical for ages as well. i have even seen them in with discus at 30 deg ! the simplest tank i ever made was a large round glass container with a rock that stuck up out of the water and had hatiora growing on it. chucked in some wcmm and away i went. was doin a water change sometime later while under the influence when i noticed the the crud i was syphoning up were actually fry
  22. you can get really tiny ones online http://www.fish-street.com/boyu_ef05_3i ... gory_id=67
