    Heating

careful with those master pet heaters they arent waterproof and the top shouldnt be under water - had one fail killing a tank of peacock fry
  2. if you were fishkeeping 20 years ago that filter would be one of your only options lol they should be pretty cheap if you can find a lfs that stocks them . they are aqir-powered so you will need an air pump oh and by the way nice pics illusions im jealous i seen some for sale at a lfs recently was so tempted
  3. mine comes up to the surface and eats normal fish food flakes all the time but he gets veges also
  4. i have the 1200 and the 2400 which are bigger but the 1200 and 100 are very similar my 12oo runs on a tank full of messy goldfish and hasnt been cleaned out in over a year but still has decent output i reckon they are great value for money
  5. go for it mate you live quite close to the beach so do regular water changes a skimmer wouldnt be necessary hell i wouldnt even bother with a hydrometer just mark a level on the glass when you first put water in the tank and top up with tap water (salinity levels in estuaries are quite variable , so livestock can handle it) the only thing i can see becoming a problem is the temp getting too high in summer but perhaps you have a cool area in the house or you could use cpu fans to help cool it
  6. ohh i know chocolate cichlids like an oscar sorta but smaller (still quite big in the scheme of things)
  7. puffers they will eat the fry could go brackish and get fig 8 puffers
  8. well hood is now over halfway i have make up one more support for the pl 24w fitting and affix a lid and front panel which will lift up here is a back veiw showing the cooling fan for MH veiw of inside not much to look at just MH fitting all up so far..........
  9. well if only the internal box is suction capped in and it fall off water level will drop to the bottom of the syphon tube in the display tank and rise in the sump maybe a couple of inches at most ive been running one like this for ages now with no problems
  10. just a thought 12days is probably not a long enough time to starve a fish perhaps it died from other causes have you tested your water etc it could also be these other factors making them not eat
  11. whistlers will get eaten perhaps divide the tank into two separate areas
  12. got the stand mostly built and primed its going to be spray painted black front back all i have to do is build a small stand for the refugium which will be a 1.5ft tank that sits inside the cabinet offset and above the sump which is a slightly bigger tank(my old nano display and sump! ) tank is relative position of sump empty space next to it will be under refugium and used for storage then i will get some mdf skirting board for around the top of the tank to hide the bottom inch of the tank (and to even it up visually for the hood i plan to build) i may also add more ventilation holes in the cabinet this is the 150MH unit im going to build into the hood im going to use a 10k bulb supplementry lighting will be in the form of these two pl bulbs on my nano at present but i will use marine blue tubes in both of them blue one 24w other is 36w have started plumbing work also using flexible pipe and irrigation fittings where possible i also plan to use a carlson surge device of about 4l on this tank so i played around with the idea but on my 5ft african tank here is a trial run the current produced by it- Note its only a 5l bucket and 5l in a 540l tank is not enough to raise the water level by much its fed by a jebo cannister filter here and the syphon tube is not big enough so i m planning to use a old kitchen s-bend or part of and plumb it to a hansen tank fitting that way it should be able to empty the bucket in a matter of seconds rather than about 1min as it currently takes although if this is too much i can reduce the diameter of the pipe before it enters the tank. overall i found the noise of this suitable for a living room but not suitable for a bedroom
  13. i have had the nano set up for maybe 3 months now just to prove to myself i was up to keeping marines im happy with the results but have some things i want to do differently on my next tank. so i have just brought a 500mm cube which will give me a greater choice of livestock and more stability. the cube is drilled with an internal partition(painted black) and overflow on the back wall . the partition is also drilled and two bulkhead fittings are attached with loc line fittings threaded on. the bottom of the tank is drilled behind the partition to allow for a standpipe and a back-up stand pipe. i also got a 150w MH fitting with it that has an electronic ballast (thanks MyXsPtlK). so the fun now begins i have to build a hood and modify a table i have to make a stand for the hood im gonna leave plenty of room to add extra things to the hood , im playing with the idea of a syphon surge system will also add actinic pl tubes though im unsure which fitting to use atm i have a 36w and a 24w i can salvage from my nano .for the sump i plan to diy this as well and use my current nano tank and sump as a sump and refugium . i will be using lids on all of the tanks to reduce evaporation however i will plan into it using fans to help with heat issues in case i have any in summer. i will use a diy ATO also when i get that far along but right now im going to be busy building the stand and hood loc-line in overflow partition veiw of back of tank with two holes drilled in bottom for standpipe plumbing
  14. you need it to keep the syphon or else once it breaks it wont start again. go to the warehouse and buy two small tupperware containers then you have your inside and outside boxes and just bend a piece of acrilic when hot over the top of the tank and attach the boxes to this the inside box could be kept separate if on suction caps as this will set the level of water in the tank and make it adjustable make some grooves in two edges of this for an overflow comb. just watch the cost because as soon as you start buying plumbing fittings and Bulkhead fittings you may find it could creep up considerably and leave you wishing you had drilled it
  15. those ones are good the air isnt likely to trap in the u tube as the bubbles tend to get taken thru with the flow of water its when you make one up from elbows and you have a straight piece at the top you run into problems
  16. http://www.notjustcichlids.co.nz/productlist.asp?cat=FI give this guy a pm on here or an email see what else he has
  17. or a canister filter to pump it back up?
  18. spoon

    Filtration

there is the redundancy factor as well say you have two canister filters and one craps out you still have one good one another feature of this is that you can clean one out at a time a few months apart so you dont lose most of your good bacteria
  19. i use an exo terra 2% uvb energy saver style on my frog tank wasnt to badly priced i guess u would need a higher % though
  20. sprinkle some yeast on the water and after a couple days of sun you will have nice green water
  21. hey mate if you are buying frogs or tadpoles from pet shops down here even if they are labelled as green or golden bells they are most likely southern bells any way
  22. around 11cm was brought as a 3cm juvie from notjust cichlids less than a year ago
