  1. ok drilling a hole in the top endcap lets air into the durso. the bigger the hole the more air goes thru. the smaller the hole, less air but more water(almost a full syphon etc). to tune it what you have to do is to start from a small hole in the endcap and slowly work your way up. what your aiming for is to stop the "flushing" action, thats when the water suddenly drops in the overflow, followed by a gurgle. just slowly work up the drill sizes til the "flushing" action stops. if the hole is too big in the endcap, it will make the water level too high in the overflow chamber.
  2. yea theres few people on here that has some i suspect.
  3. using a hansen 32mm or 40mm female tank fitting will work. heres a bit of a diagram on how to set it up. I'm sure someone can give you a few more hints to set it up.
  4. that would give you a standpipe that does full syphon. not good in a power failure. you can just set it up like my marine tank I'm building(in saltwater section). its a bit overkill having 2 durso's on it but just in case 1 gets blocked or i want a really grunty pump on it. you'd get away with 1...
  5. Welcome to the forums Jo, Glad to see you made it on here
  6. also by the look of the pics, its absolutely covered in coraline. and its been in the tank for 4 years.
  7. theres some on trademe you can use. pick up only in christchurch and its pretty cheap in regards to normal liverock prices.
  8. hey blue, have you tried rexel? they're pretty good
  9. It looks like a clean set-up. nothing wrong with the red sea berlin. just needs alot of adjusting and a high head-height pump according to this and other forums. I'll be running one on my set-up possibly. definitely going to need more live-rock  na i'd say its worth it.
  10. mine did the same. puttin stress on the swivels hose connectors wreck the o-ring so i just wiggled them and turned em a bit and they stopped leaking. have you still got the manual?
  11. i run 2 150w heaters in my 4foot. more reliable if 1 fails and less plugs taken up running 3 100w heaters
  12. have you tried Greg (tanks2u) or Tony (goldfishman) on trademe? they may do the job for you if they have the glass available. I know Greg is currently selling one with your specs.
  13. there is a south auckland club, but i think they only meet a couple times a year. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/clubs/south_auckland/ the next active closest club would most likely be Auckland Fishkeepers Association.
  14. yay! my father used to have a coldwater set-up back in the 80s when we lived in otahuhu. I still have his stand from that set-up (the only thing that wasn't sold). I remember snapper being in there at some stage but being around 5 at the time, i don't remember much about the initial set-up or how he ran it. not long after that we moved to Oz and he set-up a tropical marine, with a wet-dry filter etc but thats a different story.
  15. Its the same skimmer as i was planning on using for my 4ft. should be pretty good with a decent pump behind it. something with a high-head is what everyone has recommended to me, but the stock pump should be good.
  16. heres an update Dursos plumbed up... sump plumbing with a 4000lph lifetech pump. I've used the Lifetech because its just sitting around. should i stick with this pump or get something smaller? Getting the Loc-line in the next couple of days and the hose fittings for the returns.
  17. hey wasp. i was thinkin any coral that would go into the main tank when its finished. but for now just some zoas to start for a few months, and then prolly lps etc. oh and the scwd will be external.
  18. i've looked at the nanostreams they look a lil bulky. will be quite daunting in such a small tank i'd say. worth looking at again i suppose
  19. yea well thats what i thought but a few sites regard a nano as anything under 20 gal complete system... hence the title name (not quite nano...) lol its just over at 27.6 or something like that. meh not worried. have ordered the loc-line and plumbing etc so an update will be soon. the tank is currently on the stand right now and figuring out how to set the sump for max flow. Any suggestions on pump? will a 800LPH pump do the job or something larger. i've read the bare minimum is to cycle the tank over 8-10 times an hour but the pump is only temporary. only really gonna be used for a freshwater test then its gonna be a pump upgrade. the sump has already been made (ie. baffles) to accomodate a bigger pump already and thats just drying now.
  20. we had the same problem. loaded the tank up with plants and it all went away within a couple days. possibly the plants soaked up all the nutrients that the greenwater grew on. tank is still crystal clear after a month and a half, and it sits in the sun in the mornings(ill planned spot to put a tank i know). threw in ambulia, java fern, and xmas moss from memory. it is a standard 2ft tank with a 2ft light fitting over it. might work for you too...
  21. definitely. looking around for some perspex to dremel out a short comb to suit.
  22. glass filings from dremelling out the notch on the back of the tank... knew that thing would come in handy. lol
  23. hey peeps, Been planning this tank for the last few months and have finally completed the display tank, sump and stand. Tank measurements are 500mm L x 347mm W x 450mm H, which is roughly 20 gal. the sump is a 7 gal tank with a modified H500 Aquaclear filter (custom sump will be added later, just wanted to see how it would handle for now). The filter will be a refugium. The skimmer is being sent over from Oz as i type this so it will be added to this set-up when it gets here. originally, this tank was to house my sons clownfish and a few corals of some sort but now its been blown out to be a 150w MH lit grow out tank. 2 birds with 1 stone. he doesn't mind as he'll have something to look at in his room. Plumbing is up next so I'll update this thread with pictures when I get around to it. heres the latest pics so far. Twin Durso overflows in an external overflowbox (doesn't eat into the space in the tank and i can still get the benefits of surface skimming) FTS Planning on using some Loc-line fittings for flow direction through an SCWD for random flow hence the bulkheads in the sides of the tank. Will have photos of the tank on the cabinet etc in the next few days. So hows it look so far? Take it easy on me
  24. sorry to hear of your loss . i know of 1 person that lost a yellow tang and an anemone in their marine tank. having a gennie on hand will definitely help but what if you're not at home when it happens? having a back-up UPS will help ten-fold. something that'll kick over when the power goes out. or at least give you a bit more time to sort out a better solution. there are a few sites that have DIY automatic back-up systems which involve car batteries to run the bare necessaties of a tank ie. heater/s, filter, or powerhead/s etc.
