  1. na i was confused at 1st as well. you'll need to make a hood like the 1 above or similar. then go out and get a DIY lighting Kit or the MH. Then just secure it in the hood and your away.
  2. I've heard that the power bill does jump. I haven't set mine up yet as i pick them up this weekend but for the amount of light you get from them, i'd say its worth it. Altho the brochure for GLO HO lighting is very tempting. I was going to go for a mixture of both MH and T5s in a custom hood.
  3. Can't find a pic of one that is set-up but the moment i have a pic i'll post it up. i think evil had a similar metal halide set-up but i can't be 100% sure on that. but a hood similar to this 1 will work with a lil modification to the bulb holder. Putting the ballast in under the hood isn't a good idea but you get a general idea on how the hood would look like. BUT you must not forget to add a cooling fan or something, as you will see the temp in the tank go up using this type of lighting. Edit: If you want to go T5 HO you can still use GLO products in this hood. Just get the right sized kit for your tank. The kit includes ballast, tube holders, and waterproof endcaps, which you screw into the hood and they are cheaper then the actual whole fitting you get.
  4. They're okay but not the best. T5 HO tubes put out more light as opposed to T8s so for a planted tank, thats what I would go for. But it all depends on your budget.
  5. most tanklights have ballasts. with the clip-on lights you are looking at, they actually have theirs in the actual housing. Also do the oceanfree hoods take T5 HO (High Output) Tubes?
  6. exactly. just a bulb holder and ballast. custom hood to hold it off the tank. i'm sure someone can tell you how much it has to be. was it 30cms or something. oh and it may need a cooling fan as they get real hot
  7. I'm gettin these same lights. Although the person I'm getting them off only has the tilt type left. He may have 1 more, I'm not sure. I can always ask?
  8. i've set my planted tank up to handle common plecs. main problem being is that they used to rearange the substrate quite abit and rip up plants. i found that using medium sized riverstones seem to stop them somewhat. check out the "members tanks" section and you can see how i set mine up.
  9. i brought the same product. what i didn't know was that it can't be used with live plants in the tank. so really its no use to me... but if you don't have live plants, by all means it should be good to use...
  10. pm blueandkim. he knows quite abit about co2 set-ups and he also sells some co2 gear. worth checkin that option out
  11. more then possible. give one a go as mark explains each step really well in that guide.
  12. found one at deepblueaquarium.co.nz. here's the link to the page.
  13. I'm not 100% sure on that. But its worth emailing a petshop about it. And if it isn't readily available here, this could be a business opportunity for a importer to jump on as I'm sure other people are going thru exactly what you are atm...
  14. This is just me, but doesn't it state at the bottom that 1 bag will do a 3ft tank, and 1 1/2 does a 4ft?
  15. That external overflow (weir) restarts itself when the power goes out. You can see it running here. From my understanding, as long as it stays primed, it will autostart itself when the return pump kicks back in.
  16. An external overflow box can be used if you do not want to drill your tank. I'm not sure what the costs will be but heres the LINK to Melevs reef site which tells you how to make it. Also here's the LINK to get it started. Hope this all helps.
  17. yea i was stoked when they were offered to me. i think i have 2 males tho. need to sex them.
  18. This is our set-up. its only an old tropical 2ft set-up with small brightwater gravel, that we've dropped them into. Still looking at setting up a 3ft but funds are low atm. Its just running 1 of those Elite stingray filters which seems to do the job. Currently has a few plants and a piece of driftwood.
  19. trademe i think. i saw it on there before

looks great david. can't wait to follow suit when i have the needed equipment. gonna need a hand setting it up if you can spare some time
  21. I don't think proper "Jubilee" hose clamps will rust. I used to work for a place that sells them. Slightly more expensive but worth the money.
  22. I'd take a guess that most would die on the change over. perhaps when you do a water change you can drop the water from that into the other tank so at least the water parameters are similar. other then that i don't know how its going to work. hopefully someone will either have an answer or a solution to this as i'm interested to know as well.
  23. Could do a closed loop system thru the chiller. I'm sure the salties will be able to help you set one up. Check out Melevs "Closed-Loop" set up and modify it a little to suit a chiller. Not sure if you would need a scwd so you may be able to yank that part out and set-up hosing to the chiller then back to the tank. Don't think you would need both the pipes coming off the SCWD cos you'll only have 1 coming off the chiller. Once again the salties can help on this. Just an option. Just click on closed loop and it'll take you straight there.
