  2. No, don't do that! The heater will not come on if the tank temp is over what its set too anyway, but you do risk getting a cold night and the tank temp dropping too far. If your tank is getting hot, unplugging the heater will do nothing but make it even riskier at night time That aside, i agree with marko. Fans are cheapest, but you get heaps of evaporation
  3. Haha sorry i didnt read your whole post  I thought you were wanting ideas on where to go. Er, nevermind
  4. Great walk up to the old pa site on the papamoa hills, not far from tauranga. Also (if you are into mountain biking) on the other side of the hill from the pa walk is an awesome mountain bike park. Some sweet downhill and XC tracks, aswell as some technical skinnys etc. Awesome views too.
  5. Funny, my nana, cousin, and cousins partner all got digital photo frames for xmas
  6. Yea but that blacjack guy has only had his sandbed for 2 years. It will be working awesomely yea, but in another 3-5 years time, he will most likely not have a healthy looking tank anymore if he doesn't do anything with his sand Some people say they're good, some say bad, some don't care, but the amount of tanks with a DSB that have crashed after 5 years is phenominal. I am not realy speaking from experience no. I started my old marine tank with a substrate, but it just collected so much crap in it that i took it out, and it was way better. Its up to you whether you run one, but i'd advise pulling out quarter or half the sand every 6 months or so and giving it a good rinse out in fresh saltwater as this should prevent too much crap building up in it, causing a crash in the future.
  7. Having a DSB does not mean that you don't have to syphon the bottom. Infact, it makes it even harder. You need to regularly syphon out a quarter of the sand and give it a good clean in fresh saltwater, then put it back. If you dont do this to all the sand every year or two your tank will crash. Barebottom or just a small amount of sand is much easier to look after.
  8. You will need one hell of a skimmer if you were to make it a reef tank. The small skimmer you have now would not do the job. I say go reef, IF you have $3000 to spare Otherwise, go planted!!!!

    new tank

He originally bought it to make it a marine tank with sump etc underneath, but then made it into a planted tank, and decided to use a canister filter instead of a sump and a sump will deplete co2 very fast if used in a co2 injected tank. Make sense? lol

    new tank

You need to make your pic bigger! we can't see it  Heres how it was
  12. Its exactly that, a filter. Its called a pre filter because it is before something, in this case the powerhead. To block it off you should just be able to pull the float valve part out of the bulkhead and then put a cap over the bulkhead to block it P.S. incase you didn't know, the bulkhead is the fitting that goes through the hole in the glass, and seals each side
  13. HUGE amounts of java moss or something similiar would probably help You could put a sponge filter in instead of a power filter if you are afraid of fry getting sucked in, otherwise you could try stockings to cover it, but it gets clogged quickly
  14. That will be a float valve for an automatic top up (ie, you attach it to a relay and a small pump at it automatically keeps the water level at the perfect level. Something you will not need in a freshwater tank, and will be a PITA to sort out (as the rest of it is not there) Just block that one off, and all will be well. Because that is for the Auto top off, that must mean that the section it is in, is the return section of the sump (ie where the return pump sits) all of them are powerheads yes. The one on the left looks like a Sieo, the others could be anything. The right hand one has a prefilter on it
  15. LOL, the difference between a guy whos been a mechanic for 20 years, and a guys whos been a mechanic for all of, wait, im not a mechanic, er, a guy whos been working at the mechanics for 2 years  I've only been working on this car for like 45-60 minutes a day, and since i have just bought a new bike, i wont be doing any work on it for a while

  17. Slowly coming together. I just put the AC pump back on which was a bit of a mission, considering the power steering pump was already on  Owell, got it on in the end so all good. Now i just gotta finish hooking up the wiring loom, and put a few more vacuum hoses on here and there, then get the coolant pipes on, figure out how the emission control pipe thingy majigs go, and then we might be all go  Oh, still gotta put the axles/cvs back into the box, and put the front wheels/brakes/suspension back together lol
