  1. Thats seems like alot. The tank they are in has just under 18 litres of water in it ATM, so i would need a little over 3 tsp's of salt for it. correct? I put a small amount in (probably under a tsp) and they are looking much better. i think that all signs of white spot have gone and they seem happy enough. even saw them spawning yesterday :does a happy dance: which was exciting.
  2. I heard of that happening to another person recently aswell. Yours looks like it is not on the factory aqua one stand for the tank? If that is the case, then you are buggered as they have no warranty unless they are (AFAIK) Sorry, re read your post and no its not on the factory stand. Im pretty sure you will not be covered by a warranty unfortunately
  3. Yea was just reading through several web pages about blackwater biotopes, and root biotopes
  4. Yea those pieces actually used to be connected, and they had a perfect cave right in the middle for catfish (bristlenoses) but i had to move my GBA trio from one tank to another, and the male would not come out of the hole, no matter what i tried he wouldn't come out, and the only way i could get him out was to break it in half (which was easy to do, and didn't harm him at all as it broke off around him) I couldn't put the piece into the new tank either because it had heaps of algae on it that i didn't want in the new tank. So alas, it is now two pieces  Did that make sense?
  5. Anthony, they get to like 30cms max i think Foxglove, thanks. I want to get some wood standing up higher too, but i have run out of wood to put in there  I need to go find some more. a tall tangly root like piece would be perfect for this setup. My uaru like to hang together near the floating driftwood, so im guessing that they prefer to stay around the wood. They do come straight to the top when i feed them though. David, agreed that it needs to be stuffed full of wood, but as i said, i have to get more lol. Yep i remember your tank; that wood was awesome, and would be perfect for a blackwater biotope tank.
  6. Meh, may aswell post them here This is a photo of them still in the bag when i got them And this is one of them a couple months back Anthony. no they are not a breeding pair. they are way to small to breed yet anyway. They are almost impossible to sex, and the only sure way to sex them is if you see them laying eggs, then you can see which is female. The breeding pair that these ones came from are absolutely BEAUTIFUL fish, and i get to see them on friday! I will take the camera with me and see if i can get some photos of them.
  7. Yep. do you remember a while back when i posted a photo of them still in the bag? man have they grown!
  8. Snookie they are a little over 4 inches at a guess. probably around 11 cm or so. Anthony, would love a BIG tank for them, and yea it would look wicked setup like that, but i will be limited to a 4 footer unfortunately. It will have a sand substrate, heaps of driftwood and a few rocks. I was reading a magazine not long ago and it said that blackwater streams have exactly that (sand, lots of wood, dark water, few rocks) so i will be replicating one as close to nature as i can.
  9. Nah can't be bothered putting one on this tank, but once i get them into a bigger tank i will paint the back of it black so it makes it even darker!
  10. Did you not read what i wrote? the water is stained brown because of the tannins from the wood and the peaty water that i put in. It is a blackwater biotope, hence the 'black' water
  11. This is my 'Blackwater biotope' tank which is home to my two Uaru. They also have a male keyhole cichlid as a friend as he doesn't like my other fish. The tank is in our spare bedroom so has hardly any traffic past it, and does not have a light on it (i put one on for the photos) A few bits of driftwood keep the water stained brown, and i put some very dark peat water in every now and again to realy darken it up, which they love. Tank is almost 3 foot long, and is farely high which the Uaru like. They will be going into a bigger tank soonish, with loads more driftwood! excuse the floating DW, it hasn't water logged yet. looks pretty cool though lol. water is way darker in real life, but doesn't seem very dark in the photos Suggestions, comments, criticism welcome. sorry about the crap photos/reflections etc
  12. i've read that doing water changes when you have green water just makes it worse because the bacteria/algae that are making your water green love the fresh new highly oxygenated water that you are putting back in. However, i have always just done huge water changes (90%) 3 or 4 days in a row, and it has always gone away for me....
  13. White cloud mountain minnows. they will breed heaps in there, and will eat the insects
  14. Obviously doesn't want my help then
  15. Whats the point in taking them back and bringing more home. The whitespot is already in your tank, so even if you put different ones in they will have whitespot within a couple days too. Raise the temp, and get some whitespot cure
  16. No thats not how you breed killies. Mop spawners are exactly that. they spawn in a mop of wool and then you either pick the eggs off the wool and putthem into another smaller container, or you leave them in the mop and take the adults out. either way the eggs will hatch in 10-14 days. The adults won't eat the eggs if you spawn them into a mop, but most killies will eat their own fry. Peat spawners are a different story..... EDIT: there ya go, 15L is even fine. they can be kept in quite small tanks.
  17. Don't believe either of those species are here no. There is around 20 species in NZ
  18. For a trio you would want around a 20L tank. they don't need very big tanks, but the smaller the tank the more water changes you need to do. I keep mine in about 25L tanks. Fry i keep in small containers until they are bigger than they go into a bigger tank Hope you get into them! they are awesome!!! Oh and don't forget to join the NZKA
  19. Sorry i was wrong. Kribs are NOT a rift lake cichlid, but are still considered an african cichlid. Lionheads as has been suggested would be awesome with them IMO.

    Salt

Who uses Salt with their Nothos? I have put a little bit in with my Rachovii because they have some small spots of white spot on them :-? Whos uses it? And if so, what dosage?
  21. Careful Hans, hes silly enough to add that
  22. Its not a nudibranch or something of that kind?
  23. There isn't really a ratio, but you need to mix it up until it is a nice pinky solution. It only takes a very small amount, so don't overdo it
  24. No you mix up a pink solution in a bucket with some water and leave the plants in it for half an hour. then you give them a quick rinse and put them in the tank. you shouldn't put them into it for any longer, but in saying that, i have left plants in PP overnight (accidently) and they were fine.
