I think the mistake would be to encourage falcons to come closer to civilization where there will be a lot of conflicts. I think they would do better and be happier up in the bush where I have seen them. They would get the odd pidgeon taking a short cut home but would not cause the problems I can see if encouraged to come closer to town. Lions and tigers cause lots of problems when in conflict with humans and they are very good killing machines also. I am concerned that it will make a lot of people pretty agro against falcons. You want to see the face of someone at Arthurs Pass who comes back from a walk and finds a kea systematically destroying their car.
The problem with getting approval for animals, fish or plants that are not approved for importation for other than zoos is that you have to convince ERMA that they are safe to import and this can cost many thousands of dollars, without any guarantee of success. They would then have to get through quarantine after that as well. A good hobbie for fat cats with nothing better to do but a nightmare for us average yobbos.
It sounds like fin rot which is a bacterial infection and needs to be treated with a bacteriacide. I would use furan 2 but use it as per the instructions. Angels do best with lots of water changes. It is hard to see a bacterial infection considering that you could fit one million bacteria on a pin head. What you usually see with fin rot is the opportunistic infection of fungus which usually follows (apart from the missing fins which you have spotted)
I have tanks about that size that I have made and they are 10mm glass with euro bracing top and bottom. I also have a tank that size from 6mm glass but it is for turtles and is only ever half full.
I have spent many hours dealing with people using and people complaining of bird scarers. If you were to sit down and work out the most anoying thing to invent that is what you would come up with. Even to the point of one couple selling their winery because the neighbour was a nutter and was threatening to sort it out with a shot gun. I can see the introduction of falcon becoming a similar problem. I have spent many hours in the mountains fascinated by their hunting ability but had only seen them in very remote locations where they would not be a problem. Brought or encouraged closer to civilization They will be a total pain. As Barrie says, they do not only hunt for food, they are born killers and are very good at it. I would think that pidgeons will only be one of the things they will target. Magpies protecting a nest can be a pain but are usually disposed of quietly. A protected falcoln would be a lot more of a problem to defend against and discourage. When I was younger and sillier I thought it would be great to climb a cliff face to observe falclon chicks close up and admit that I gave up a long time before mother did.
If you are cutting 2nd hand glass yourself make sure it is clean also or you will ruin your cutter (and therefore your cut). I also always take the sharp edge off the glass (with an old oilstone I have been using for about 30 years and is now 3/4 worn away). This will save your fingers. If cutting your own glass you need to be careful that it is all cut acurately and square as the glass has no give and every mistake gets worse as you progress.
When I was breeding angels I kept each pair in a 12 gallon 24x12x12 inch bare tank and it worked well. I would think that would be about the territory they would defend and anything less will be a war zone.
I have someone who wants to buy a couple of baby turtles and is bidding on a tank on trademe (151607010). The filter looks like it would have reasonable capacity but I am not familiar with the make. Does anyone know what make it is, capacity and are they reliable?
For anyone who wants to know--- The rules are made by politicians elected by and answerable to us. That being the case we are ultimately responsible as we let them get away with it and put our energy into blaming the beaurocrats who have the job of enforcing the laws that the politicians we elected made. Don't vote---it only encourages them. There aint much point in blaming the messenger either. If you don't like the law give your politicians an ear full.
You would be better off with a large cheap plastic container from the wharehouse or a plastic container shop. It only has to hold water. I started breeding fish many years ago and could only afford damaged baths from the auctions at $5 each. 5 baths hold a lot of water and a lot of fish.\ and cost $25 then
He has been selling most of the killies on trademe of late so I guess he would know. I have seen lots of other killies for sale but can't recall seeing them.
There are people in Christchurch I know who have bred them also but they are not likely to share any info. All I know is that they are more difficult and a lot less productive than neons.
The ones I have seen in the mountains round here nest in very inhospitable locations. I have never seen them anywhere other than up the mountains miles from civilization. We live and learn. We do have a pair of wood pidgeons in the park near us for most of the year. Probably running out of food about now.
