  1. The last sentence is the one I like.
  2. Looks like a large, pretty plain goldfish to me.
  3. Your E. uraguayensis will eventually fill that aquarium by itself. I doesn't need high light once established as the leaves will grow up to the surface. The advantage is that it is the only Echinodorus sp. I know of that will get realy big but not go into an emersed form so that all you see in the tank is the stalks. I have one in a 500mm high tank with low light and the leaves are up to the surface. I also have some emersed with runners that I hope to have available way down the track. It is not easy to propagate---hence the price. I have had them a few years but have never had a runner while submersed.
  4. They are supposed to be pressure tested and stamped every 5 years or not filled. I think the test is $40-50
  5. Does anyone have the formula for how many drops of ammonia or dead shrimps are exactly equal to 6 guppies? Patience is a virtue they say. If you add your fish slowly the whole system will adjust to complete balance eventually. Grandad wasn't always a bit silly.
  6. Your hardness is about twice ours and snails live OK.
  7. Congratulations its a boy. I see yours have done the same as mine converting from emersed to submersed---they have grown a lot bigger because of the well developed rootstock, but the pups are more the normal size. Nice pic.
  8. If that is the plant that used to be called Hygrophilla costata and was sold as a coldwater pond plant the leaves look far too large to be the same plant.
  9. If it wants to brumate it is best that it has an empty stomach.
  10. If you are not getting algae problems why block the light? Sometimes a combination of sunlight and artificial can work well. The sunlight is best from the top but not always easy to arrange.
  11. Because it is such a large place and includes Hawaii and Alaska I would think that if they use it interstate they would probably use it for export as well. I am not suggesting they don't use it or it is a bad idea, only that I have no idea as I have not seen it. As Jennifer has aid, there are a number of additives used to relieve stress, prevent the spread of problems from overcrowding, remove ammonia and a raft of other reasons. I would be curious to see what it is and the reason for it.
  12. I have not seen fish imported from the US, only from Peru, Singapore, Malasia and Germany.
  13. A good experiment. Please report back.
  14. It is already gravid and will still have a number of batches of young to the original male it has mated with regardless of what you put it with.
  15. Simon will be your man--I think he has had an ID on that previosly. If I remember it was not a native or polysperma. Can't remember though.
  16. I have never seen fish arrive from overseas in blue water, it is usuall gungy brown from overcrowding.
  17. I have never seen or heard of them in New Zealand. If they are genetically modified it is unlikely that we ever will.
  18. I f you have the glass I can show you how to cut it. If you need the glass as well try any glass merchant in the yellow pages.
  19. 100 X 50 is not the same as 4 X 2, it is the metric equivalent. In practical terms they are so similar it would not matter which you used.
  20. Undergravel filters work on the same principle as any other filter. They are a media for the housing of bacteria that operate the nitrogen cycle in conjunction with physical filtration which collects some of the gunge that continues to feed those bacteria. I had a fish house with many tanks that were all operating with UG filters and they worked well. The only problem was sterilizing the system if there had been a disease. In the end I went to bare bottom tanks, box filters and reverse flow diatom filters (which I think are great but no longer seem to be available).
  21. They were supposed to be albino but the black eye was a give away. Beautiful fins on the parents so hoping for something good with the offspring. How old before they breed?
  22. As stated earlier, Crypts can vary a lot with conditions. The colouration will be because of the conditions, mainly light. Available iron (ferrous) will increase the red/brown colouration as well.
  23. Patience grasshopper. The prices have dropped a lot from the original $1500 each, and still travelling down.
  24. Rush in----rush out. Those that expected to get rich may have woken up. It will be interesting to see where the price settles. Beardies and blue tounges are now pretty cheap. I just hope they don't become "throw away pets" like the red eared sliders are becoming.
  25. I managed to get some very small golden longfins and some splits, but they have a lot of growing to do. The parents are longfin normals which have thrown some golden longfinds as well as normals. 2/3 of the normals should be splits. Patience is a virtue they say.
