  1. Some call it KHARMA others call it PAYBACK.
  2. Adding CO2 to water produces carbonoc acid which then makes carbon available to your plants. If you add chemicals to adjust your pH you are defeating the purpose of adding CO2. If you don't want the water too acid then add less CO2.
  3. When adding ammonia, how do you know how much evapourates?
  4. As a kid we always spent our holidays around the lakes and sounds. That was in the good ol days when you could just pitch a tent by a lake without getting arrested. Fond memories.
  5. When they hatch they are nuplii rather than baby brine shrimp. They have no mouth or anus and are feeding off a yolk sac and this is where the best nutrient comes from. After 24 hours they have used up the yolk sac and started feeding as baby brine shrimp so their food value is best when they first hatch. It is best therefore to set up and hatch a fresh batch every day. Some breeders would start a fresh one every 12 hours and have a few going. Depends how many fry you are feeding.
  6. When I had the fish house and was breeding heaps of fish I built one by puting baffles into a small tank and painting it black except for a small area at one end and an airstone at the other. The nuplii swim towards the light and you can siphon or net them out without the shells. I also reverted to coke bottles as it was a poor hatch rate and wasted a lot of eggs.
  7. If you put a slice of apple on the land area and add the fruitflies they will head for the apple and you can easily tell how much food is available.
  8. It means that the council can set limits on stock numbers in an urban area and you need a permit to keep more than that.
  9. Flash fighters and guppies are the same. They cost more to buy overseas and people are not prepared to import them because most people just want a fighter or a guppy. Many importers are not importing guppies because they lose a lot.
  10. Heaps of leaves and then add what you need slowly to get what you are after. You are making a concentrate of the additives you want so changes need to be slow.
  11. Try and see, and try not to poison your fish
  12. I used to boil the leaves and add the water slowly to get the required result.
  13. Most importers and large scale breeders would have their temperatures around 23 degrees as it keeps the power bill down and diseases develop a little slower.
  14. One of the problems is that many NZ breeders sell them a lot smaller than the imported ones so the mature ones are usually imported. It is a lot easier to do water changes on a thousand containers when labour costs are a fraction of what they would be here.
  15. I have done it in terrariums for keeping newts by puting a glass divider in and filling one half with water and one with gravel.
  16. Would this matter not be best remaining in the hands of the SPCA? Would a federation of fishkeeping clubs be regarded as experts in looking after rats, mice, cats and dogs etc even without the diverse opinions out there on the correct or best way to look after fish. It is regarded by many people to be cruel to keep any fish in any sized aquarium. Many others think it is cruel to catch fish on a hook and line just for pleasure and then let them go but I don't hear too many objections to that. We could be making a rod for our own backs.
  17. They will be OK at either but will live longer at 24 degrees.
  18. The pot plant spider plant (not sure of latin name) is sometimes sold as wheat grass and has softer leaves but is varigated. Probably will not last long submersed.
  19. Check for velvet. Easiest to spot I find with a torch at night with the lights out. Can also come with stress.

Welcome and enjoy your time here.
  21. Your whole system needs to be intergrated and balanced. Low light is simply that. Medium light can have CO2 (diy even) and added liquid fertilizer. High light realy needs pressurised CO2 and added liquid fertilizers.
