  1. Sounds like blackbeard algae. Do a search on hear there is heaps of info and discussion.
  2. I know of an old lady with two daughters who left $10 to one daghter and explained that she was rich, had enough money and had neglected her all her life. Left the rest to daughter 2 and it was contested. It was redistributed but not 50/50. Rather than give it all to the legals can sometimes be better to sort out a deal. Money will come out of your pocket and also from inheritance (your other pocket). Depends how much is involved.
  3. Have to agree with Stella. It, like democracy costs heaps and who will pay? I suspect that the $10k towards expenses would be a fraction of the actual costs as well.
  4. The biggest poisonous effect with lead in water is shot gun pellets that aquatic birds pick up in their crop.
  5. Lead is pretty insoluble and that is why it has been used as flashings on roofs for such a long time. Idon't know about fish but humans can excrete lead but only at a very slow rate. It becomes toxic when we absorb more than we can excrete. I never leave the lead on the plants as it chokes the roots.
  6. Ozelot has brown spots on the leaves---hence the name. I have rose emersed but had only grown it submersed in low light. It has a runner and plantlets with nice looking leaves at the moment. I think there was an osiris called rose as well as "rose"
  7. I think the goldfish in the lower selwyn are rudd
  8. Sometimes in older houses (like ours) there can be a header tank in the ceiling that supplies water to the hot water cylinder. If the lid is not on properly there can be all sorts of unspeakables in the bottom of that tank. At 2 years of age it is not likely to be the case with your place.

    Hey Hey!!

    Welcome and enjoy
  10. How old is the house and do you have a header tank in the ceiling (low pressure hot water supply)?
  11. Trout are not easy to keep. They need clean, cold, highly oxygenated water. I kept a half dozen baby ones in a goldfish pond for 2 years and they hardly grew at all. We put a couple of dozen (rescued from a dried up water race) into an oxidation pond full of daphnia and they only lasted a couple of years as well.
  12. I have used it in the past. Sometimes successfully and sometimes not. Be aware that it is a strong, non selective oxidizing agent and will react with plants and fish so you need to be careful how you use it.
  13. New Zealand is different to most other countries in the way we express unemployment. Our figures are of registered unemployed and heaps of people out there do not register because they will not be entitled to a benefit for any number of reasons. Most countries express the figures as a result of a survey that tells who would work if they could get a job. Our figures are therefore completely false.
  14. Needs some red sword plants such as barthii, red special, horamanii red. Leave a bit of room in the front for horizontalis and parviflorus tropica. Looking good so far.
  15. A copy of a previous post about chlorinated water supplies. What you read on the internet about chloramine being a combination of chlorine and ammonia is because that is how it is manufactured in countries where it is added to the water supply as monochloramine and used as a disinfectant rather than chlorine. It is used because chlorine is a strong oxidizing agent and reacts with other compounds in the water supply to form nasties which monochloramine does not. It is used in about 25% of the USA. It is a requirement of the Department of Health in NZ that chlorine is used as it is a better disinfectant than monochloramine. All proteins are a double helix of phosphates with various amino acids hanging off them and all living things contain proteins. Chlorine reacts with amino acids and other nitrogen compounds to form monochloramine, then dichloramine and then trichloramine. This is called the chlorine demand when chlorinating water supplies and there will be no free available chlorine until this demand is satisfied. As the chlorine dissapates the equilibrium changes and the chloramines move back to monochloramine and this is the compound that irritates your eyes in a swimming pool and the compound that people think they are smelling as chlorine. The way to fix that problem is to add more chlorine and push the chloramines up to the trichloramine state and this is not so irritating. It is always the case therefore that chlorinated water supplies contain chloramines and they will not be removed by storage, heating or aeration, but will be moved to the monochloramine state which is the one that is most dangerous to your fish. The only way to remove the monochloramine is with chemicals such as sodium thiosulphate which is the active ingredient in treatments available from the pet shop.
  16. It is quite safe to eat those wild mushrooms. There are other types which are extremely toxic.
  17. I can understand that you are upset at the death of your fish but I have some problems with your problem: Standing chlorinated water for 24 hours may remove the chlorine but will not remove the chloramines that are about as toxic. I have explained this in previous posts. A pH of 3.5 is extremely acid and will corrode all the copper and brass in the reticulated water supply area. Councils start to panic when the pH gets anywhere on the acid side of 7. I have spent years working with water supplies and the phones at the council office would melt. It is not possible to have free ammonia in water with a pH of 3.5 Young discus are very vulnerable to all sorts of water changes. I do hope you get to the root of the problem.
  18. Where does the council water supply come from--catchment, river, lake etc?
  19. A pipe is usually made with a seperate bowl and stem to get the grains running the strongest way. Rata is dense but tends to shake. One of the hardest woods is a common ornamental tree with a crispate leaf and a green or red form but for the life of me I can't remember the name. It is very common in gardens around this way.
  20. There is no reason for the council to add ammonia to the water supply. A pH of 3.5 from the tap would eat up all the hot water cylinders in the water supply district in a matter of weeks. I would suggest you test your tests.
  21. The term hardwood relates to the cell structure of the wood. Some woods which are hardwoods such as kauri and totara are actually soft as butter to work with or carve. A good hard wood would be black maire which is very dense and has a good grain pattern. Using the timber from coffins would be worse than the tobacco as it is customwood which is bonded with urea-formadehyde.
  22. Being a bit thick, I work on the assumption that they lose their gills and become terrestrial because they want to leave the water. Since mine are not heated they have a cooling down period over winter and get breeding in the spring/summer. The climate is a bit cooler here than over the Bombays so there you may need a fridge to winter them. Here we just try to avoid them becoming fancy iceblocks.
