  1. Y ou are on to it. I have never added astaxanthin to their diet. What are the advantages and disadvantages?
  2. Now would be a good time to start breeding mealworms, locusts, crickets, slaters and any other live critters you can get hold of.
  3. The rockwool is completely inert and is used to locate the plant while being fed in a hydroponics setup. They will do a lot better if planted out (if you can keep them planted)
  4. Sorry you are right, it will be converting the ammonia to ammonium. I have never used it so was making assumptions--never a good thing.
  5. You need the ammonia to be produced and converted to nitrite and then to nitrate by the bacteria. Getting established filter media will provide the bacteria but they will all die off if you take the food source off them by using ammolock.. Chuck the ammolock and get some established filter media.
  6. It used to make me smile a bit when you ask the staff what a plant is and they say "$3.50 a bunch".
  7. Can't tell too much from the pics but probably fungus as it seems to be pretty localised. Could treat with meth blue directly as suggested. It is stressful on the fish as you have to keep them out of the water as long as possible. Wunder tonic or furan2 used to treat the whole tank would be less stressful.
  8. They are periodically available on Trademe and are claimed to comply with the requirements.
  9. Methylene blue has been used since the year dot as a fungal treatment on fish and eggs and I have used it many times in the past. Wunder tonic contains meth blue (as well as malachite green, acriflavine and quinine if I remember correctly). Are you sure it is a fungal infection and not mouth fungus aka saddleback, collumnaris or cotton mouth disease. This is a bacteria and needs to be treated with an antibiotic. Often true fungal infections are an opportunistic infection following a bacterial infection of an injury so you may need an antibiotic for that.
  10. I stand corrected. Legal and available but requiring a bit of special care.
  11. I live in Christchurch and mine know a lot more about it than me. Is this their first breeding season? Have they brumated? Are you sure they have eggs? When looked at from the bottom there should be an egg top left and bottom right. The eggs are easy to spot when ready to lay. There may be a spot bottom left which is a calcium deposit for the eggs. They can lay eggs between 2 and four weeks apart.
  12. I don't measure humidity--just add warm water and squeeze out excess. I use sphagnum moss but either would be OK.
  13. What do you have for them to lay in and is it the right temperature and humidity?
  14. Welcome and enjoy your time here.
  15. Replace the hose with a new one---the mechanic will charge for their time and the hose. Make sure it is the hose that is leaking and not a fault in the clip holding on.
  16. I had been told that the twist related to the pH but it could be lighting as well. Better get a twist back in it before the bogey man cometh.
  17. How well developed are the eggs and do you have a pic?
  18. It is the Regional Council that will deal to it (with assistance from Maf if required). Often the problem is too great, but in our Avon river they go for it because there are only patches now and again.
  19. V. spiralis has straight leaves and a spiraling flower stem. Yours may be this plant which is an unwanted organism. There is a worry by Maf that there could be hybrids out there. I would expect V. tortifolia to be more twisted and V. contortionist even more so. Not sure about the flowers though.
