  1. What about the fish's gills being treated with chloramines.
  2. What about the chloramines that remain. As the chlorine evapourates off the equiliblrium moves towards monochloramine which is the worst for your fish and is even used to disinfect water supplies in some states in the US.
  3. There are already some variations popping up and will happen because there is such a small gene pool at the moment. But some time before the really fancy stuff is available I fear. My point was that if they popped up tomorrow it is unlikely thay would have been bred.
  4. I feed dandelion leaves to my beardies as a staple--flowers as a treat.
  5. Welcome and enjoy your time here.
  6. Sandblasters are not allowed to use silica sand. They are protected with fully protective gear but everyone else is not. You should not therefore be able to buy silica sand from them.
  7. I dust calcium with D3 on all live food for beardies and leps.
  8. It is not a Vallisneria and I am not aware of it being in NZ.
  9. I made a tank years ago in a cabinet to go in a public place and used 10 mm laminated glass but not toughened for the front so I cut it to size. The restauranteur that wanted it went broke before he opened so I ended up with it. The cabinet did not survive the February shake but the tank is still OK.It would be over 30 years old now. Tank was about 1200x450x450 but had full euro bracing top and bottom. Most places that use laminated glass would require toughened as well these days.
  10. Sounds about right time wise. Unless you have bags with rounded corners I would turn the bags up side down and I would use oxygen.
  11. Each piece is about 6mm plus plastic laminate and if one breaks so will the other. They tend to act independently rather than like laminated timber.
  12. True--if all else fails then read the instructions.
  13. Way too thin to use at that size--would be equivalent to about 6 mm. Would be able to cut it down to something more realistic. I have used laminated glass in the past but you also need to be careful that water doesn't get in between the layers.
  14. May not be the answer but I would have put the heatpad (only one) on the top and used oxygen rather than air.
  15. I think that material would work well and look good too.
  16. You can cut an almost rectangular piece out for the plumbing provided you round the corner off. Make sure that the cut starts and finishes at right angles to the edge then when scored tap it underneath with the underside of the cutter to stat it running. Practice on a bit of scrap and start with 4mm.
  17. I do a bit of woodworking and have dreamed of making some. You could make them from pottery. I use icecream containers--look ugly but work well as I add moist sphagnum moss and inspect them daily. Because of that I prefer them to have a base to keep the moss contained and to have a lid so I can get good access and make a hole in the side. When I get some good bits of natural wood I will give it a go. Could be a good excuse to shoot over to the west coast.
  18. It can often be caused by too much phospate. Plants need phoshate but if you make sure there is plenty of light, carbon, nitrate and micronutrients then the plants will take off and minimise the phosphate. Many sites suggest adding nitrate to get the balance better but I think making sure that phoshate is the limited factor in all the requirements is the safest. If you don't get the balance right it will come back even after you kill it with antibiotics. I lost a load of fish once by dosing with E. as It killed the bugs in the system and ended up with ammonia poisoning. I had used it previously without problems. Also if you cut out the lights you will still get it back if you don't get to the initial cause.
  19. I have a two storey 1600 x 600 600 that I built and each has a four foot UV tube on 14 hours a day. This is the second year with leps in the top and beardies in the bottom. Also have other leps in cages without UV (adults and babies) and they all look OK. Not a lot of sun around when the leps are active but the beardies would bask all day if they got the chance. We have a cage outside to put them in on a good day but the first thing they do is go and hide--bloody strains. I think the best thing with beardies is a mixed diet of live food and be selective with the salids to try and stay away from the harmful stuff like phosphates, oxalates and goitrogens
  20. As I said earlier, I leave a container of live mealworms (of apropriate size) in with the beardies and adult leps. I add calcium and D3 to that container all the time. Mealies are high in Phosphorus as is the bran you feed them on so I add calcium to help get the ratios a bit better. I feed almost only dandelion leaves, nosturtian leaves and the odd flowers of each with chopped up zuchini and spray that every second day with liquid vitamins. The zuchini has very little food value but it is a way of getting moisture into the thick sods. Leps will drink water but beardies will dehydrate to death beside a bowl of water. When young or if the are looking a bit dehydrated or they are gravid I give them a bath in warm water. There is good info on the beautiful dragons site.
  21. Others may have a better idea on that.
