  1. Stockings work good over the intake too.
  2. Another species not on the list - Better get them breeding :bounce:
  3. If you had to wait for Caryl yeah she definitely deserves an ice cream. You biked along way Caryl. From Tauranga to Blenheim. You'll be sore tomorrow. Maybe it should be a rum and raisen icecream. Tip the rum into the hokey Pokey and add sum raisens. Looking forward to seeing your pics.
  4. Oh Commiserations Ghostface that sucks. I have never had a fish die and float either. I figure it must be cause I am too observant and that they don't float until it decomposes abit and gas up inside causing them to float again. Still either way its not good when it's a great fish.

    Clove Oil

Electrocution - - Stand back  Who said the head needs cutting off? If the gills stop altogether surely that means it is dead - lack of oxygen to the brain - so this can't happen with clove oil if used as an anaesthetic.
  6. That sounds like the little mongrels - millions snails - pffft That'll learn me for not sterilising my plants when I got them
  7. My best spills are the little ones where the bucket I am syphoning into overflows  yes onto the carpet. My worst spill was &%#@!)(% brineshrimp hatchery I allowed to fall over onto the Carpet  Saltwater and Brineshrimp and eggs etc. Gee I was happy
  8. IMHO snails are the pits. I have a tank setup at a freinds place - due to my lack of space - and that has tiny snails in it (I could care less what species they are). They seem to breed like mad then run out of food and die and pollute the water. Not all of them seem to die as the tank eventually gets a water change and the process starts over. It is a pain in da ... I had a goldfish left over from my coldwater days that I put in my tropical tank and he was a great snail destroyer. He cleaned up the snail problem without charge. When summer came I put him in my parents pond as he was getting big and I felt sorry for him having to be at 28 odd degrees. Still no snails in the tank he was in.
  9. Have you got any pics. Sounds like you got a good deal. :bounce:

    Clove Oil

Well can't argue with the facts then. Thanks PJ. My next question then is how do you think the fish feels when the clove oil is added? Does it take say 5 minutes to be ?anaethetised? Or less? How long does it take from netting to hitting the floor? 10 - 15 seconds? if that?
  11. The best thing about bbs is that they can swim to stay out of the gravel where as microworms do not swim so some end up rotting in the tank. I know which is the easiest to provide tho. Oh well no pain no gain. Go the Cheifs - Can't be beaten by John's team.
  12. Hi Rebecca Great to c u here
  13. I think you are skiting cause you live in the winterless north But Seriously I think they would be better off inside. I don't know your setup but there are all manner of predators outside just waiting for a chance to have a fishy dinner. And RATS can climb and get into just about anywhere just to name one of the worst offenders. Try setting up the dripping green water if you cant be home during the day. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/a-coup ... tml#127740
  14. Well thats just incredible. Are they wild caught? Keep those brilliant pictures coming as you tell us whats happening over the coming weeks.

    coral rock

I hope not - wouldn't want the coral reefs plundered for gardening reasons as well.
  16. Thats awesome. Did you get those from Phil? In 8 Days?

    coral rock

Did it turn back up deshanp? It does look good but at $12kg its pretty pricey especially if for a big tank. I am contemplating whether it will go in my Tang tank. probably not - There are far cheaper alternatives and I'd sooner spend the dosh on livestock.
  18. That will look good and provide more bracing. Its a good sized tank.
  19. I don't make money out of keeping fish - in fact quite the opposite. Just being able to see new life from my toils is the reward. Thats the reward I'd like to have more of.
  20. I agree with Rossco It is a live animal purchase. When related to the purchase of herds of cows there are numerous conditions that can be included in the contract for the sale such as wether the beast is incalf or not - a critical thing if buying for use as a cow. The problem is getting the retailer to agree to the terms. Some are more approachable than others. Some of these critters you saltys have in your tanks are very expensive and agreements should be much more commonplace. Even if it is only agreement in advance that a fish can be returned for specific reasons within a defined period and what each partys responsibilities are. And also Pies says take your money elsewhere. Good advice but it is a shame when its the best shop in town you've got problems with. Edit Pies and others say - so do I
  21. It depends on the water supply Caper. Ours is usually fine in Hamilton without the conditioner. I only do 10 - 20 percent water changes at a time and I don't notice any problems just healthier looking tank and fish. If I can smell the chlorine out of the tap I don't do a water change that day. This could be in my head tho I am a smoker  so my sensors are a bit shot. I should get a vessel that can hold all the water I need to change at once and fill it a few days in advance. Then I could heat it and airate to be more secure in what I do. It would make it easier to as at the moment I have to muck around getting the temp up in the sump. It's not to bad in summer but in winter the water out of the tap is cooler.
  22. That stand doesn't look strong enough. It needs bracing to stop sideways movement along the length of the tank or it will end up broken at floor level.
