  1. That is quite a setback allright KK. Did they get on the MAF fish list? Has anybody got a link to that list? How are your Calvus doing Here fishy?
  2. Maybe someone on here may be able to take care of it for you while you sort out improved lodgings. Is it very contagious in an established balanced system?
  3. They are awesome looking pictures Congratulations on your new arrivals How big will they grow Catbrat?
  4. Have any of you double dosers actually used a control tank to see if it clears up with a normal dose of excel. Mine has cleared up considerably since i started adding normal rates. I have put it down to better plant growth leaving nothing for the bba to feed on. I also agree with Lynda that you should build up your dose if you are going to tip this into your tank with no heed to the manufacturers instructions
  5. Looking Good Fresh. Are your discus in here? Should be a heap of room for a pair to spawn? The other trouble you will have with the floating plants is they will end up in your sump or always up against the overflow until they end up in the sump. Got any pics of the plumbing? Is your overflow quiet?
  6. Yeah Alan good stuff  I want to have two heaters heating four tanks that are plumbed together. I want to have the heaters operating off of one thermostat so they are working in harmony but in seperate tanks. The thermostats on them are too hard to set exactly the same. Sounds like an inline thermostat might be the trick?
  7. Are the three adults the pair and another adult? If so I'd remove the adult thats not a parent and problem solved....
  8. Baffles are what you need when using a sump.. I would have them in the middle of the sump so that you can have a spare tank either side as well. I use Gravel and pumice in the baffles of mine with a big sponge prefilter where the water first runs into the baffle to get to the pump on the other side. Here is a couple of pics this is my sump - Its empty in the pic. Ideally the baffles would be closer to the centre however you wouldn't want it under the brace as it would be near impossible to get gravel etc out (which is also a problem with using gravel and glass but ...) On the left it has a compartment that could be filled with bioballs or noodles or chopped up straws apparently but I havn't used them. This is a good sump I though to - it was on Trademe but down in Christchurch so too far away. It has the dry / trickle section on top and the trickle system does look like it would be a great filter if you can get the water returning evenly over it all. The whole sump even has a big drip tray underneath it by the looks. One thing I do know from experience is the more dense your media is the less water you can get to flow through a given surface area. So if u had a 5000 gph pump your sump needs to allow 5000gph running through the baffles or it will just flood over the baffle without filtering it. So sand is out more than likely as it is too dense.

    krib male????

Your gonna need patience. As with most cichlids adults are territorial and aggressive to its own species. There is going to be a bit of a battle go on no matter which Kribensis you add while the pair get to know each other. Sometimes this can look rough but thats how it is. So long as the fish has somewhere or other to retreat to while the hunter plays hide and seek then they may eventually bond. Its only when you see the fish in obvious distress ie in the corners and still being hit you need to seperate. A bit like boxing when the ref calls TKO The best way to get a breeding pair of cichlids is to buy a breeding pair or buy Juveniles and hope you get your own pair.
  10. Well having the hoses clog up with slime preventing flow is one thing - however just because you can see slime doesn't mean it's not leaking water through the gap or else how do the hoses get clogged with it. It seems to be based on Faith that the water won't bypass the trays - I prefer science. It seems that some people like Fluval and some don't - I just wish I had found more comments from the people who don't before I decided it was a good filter to get. I am guilty of buying this based on it's reputation as opposed to it's quality - which it isn't
  11. Fluval folk should check out these reviews. Might be able to get Fluval out of last place. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/reviews/ca ... ort=rating
  12. So are you trying to tell me this pump will go with missing parts or what? The filters are not well designed anyway - It is still a lottery wether or not the water will actually ALL pass through the filter media anyway. They should be designed so that the inlet water is taken through a sealed compartment right to the bottom of the filter and then passed through the media baskets to the pump. No amount of water should be able to be pumped back to the aquarium without contact with the media - what a waste of pump power that is - like it is with the current designs. And it certainly doesn't need a primer - just another hassle waiting to happen.
  13. Do you know what ph the water comes out of your tap? Seems quite high ph8.8 Be interested to hear your progress as you build this peltier chiller.
  14. What model do you have Ira? It can't have the ridiculous primer stem that looks impossible to ever seal. What a stupid piece of engineering for people that can't use a bucket to start their canister.
  15. I would say if you could rig up a container that could be filled with activated carbon so that the water flows though it but the carbon is retained in the container it will be a great homemade water filter. The carbon would need to be replaced probably evry 6 months. I'm sure you could find some designs on google.
  16. What brands might they be. I agree Fluval's are not that quiet. Anyway the cr$p gets deeper with the FLUVAL 404 by Hagen. I am trying to get the first one going without leaking air. It has been leaking air and with the great help of the retailer (Petplanet I can highly recommend) we are going through the process of replacing the parts that did come in the box. I put in some replacement seals today and we'll see how that goes. (to replace the brand new ones ) And after I did this I cleaned and tested the flow on a couple of Aqua one cf700's I have here. they are fine. I next decided it's time to crack open the second "NEW" fluval 404 I bought on sale at Jansens. And blow me down - This piece of s#it is missing vital parts out of the box to. And this one won't be able to be rigged to get it going while I wait for parts OH MY GIDDY AUNT  I suppose when I get parts for this pita it will leak air as well. IF YOU ARE GOING TO BUY A FILTER DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON FLUVAL. ESPECIALLY NOT THE 04 SERIES. ALTHOUGH AS STATED ABOVE BY OTHERS THE 05 SERIES LOOKS THE SAME. .

    krib male????

It does look like a female but... My males have a pointy tail as well as the long pointy dorsal. However it looks by the tail to have been fin nipped and it is quite possible that it has lost some of the pointedness in the tail and the dorsal from fin nipping. Also if you bought it yesterday you will have to wait a few days for Him (hopefully) to settle in. Kribs colours fade alot when stressed. Take another photo in a few days and lets see that. Have you got heaps of hidey spaces in the tank so the other krib (s) don't stress it too much? Do you know how old it is? And what length is it?
  18. Good spotting Billaney. Fingers crossed for you
  19. Gday Caper - I'm gonna try and link to photobucket - I havn't done this before - Good thing we're in beginners corner ay.
  20. This might help http://www.pondenterprises.com/fluval/fluve4.html
  21. Java Moss does not need a lot of light so once it gets a hold on something in your aquarium it will thrive under good lighting. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/plant_survey/aq ... e95f0e302c
  22. Thanks K Krazy for the newsletter. When is the BOP trip? Some of us (well probly 1) are shift workers and need to plan in advance. C y'all Sunday then
  23. Yes but to create a pdf file you need acrobat writer - which is not a free program. Thanks Caryl I have the reader already though.
