  1. Is that 6 days with your filter turned off? - it's gunna be dead then isn't it? May as well take any carbon out and leave it going.
  2. So as a carbon source would vodka also help plants grow like CO2? Worth a little ova a shot a week allright . I suppose that depends on how much water your treating!
  3. To right Loyalty - at what price. I don't know about the prices in Christchurch but the prices in Hamilton are on the whole far more expensive than compared to Auckland, which is usually far more expensive than Trademe. If the reason is bricks and mortar are more expensive than web trading then its time the industry adopted the technology rather than attack the customer for using their head. Re discount - don't offer a discount if it is going to be a sore point to you. Certainly don't dis hobbyists who choose to take some of the sting out of your prices because you willingly offer it.
  4. Feelers or Reef Can you use any brand of vodka? Which have worked for you? The rate is 5 ml / 100 litres - Is it a once off dose or more? How often do you need to dose it. How long do you reckon it takes to clear the cyano? It's certainly easier to get hold of than pills
  5. Congratulations on your purchase John If you have them in the bottom compartment on top of the blue? sponge they should be a bit tighter - fill any left over space with either more bioballs or some of the noodles. They should be quieter above the sponge tho. You can get some more media for the other basket (it has 2 ??) or if you are el cheapo like me you could use 6-8 mm pumice or something like that - the basket does not need to be full. The more thats in them the slower the flow coming out is. If the pumice is too fine the flow will be poor. Just be careful not to let any get into the impellor, Mine has three baskets so I'm assuming you have the sponge for the bottom and the one for the top as well? In mine the top sponge and the plastic grate on top of it all stops this happening. IMHO filter wool needs replacing / at least rinsing out too often as it restricts the flow. If thats not in there then you shouldn't need to open it for months. The hoses need cleaning as often as you can be bothered though - thats a bit annoying but apart from that they are great filters.

    Sandy bottom??

Did you bend ya mums oven sharn?
  7. Gidday X If your goldfish has been living nicely for awhile in the tank then your filter must be doing something right so it gets the tick of approval  There are quite a few nice coldwater fish that are a bit bigger than neons. Neons will just get eaten by your goldfish!! McNeon's your goldfish will say. $1.95 a burger

    Sandy bottom??

    Go Sharn. Thats commitment
  9. Just because you can drink it does not mean your water is safe for fish. However it sounds as though they have been in there for a week or so? It's a fair volume of water 2400 litres by my calc. However they are big fish. As said above it is likely to be ammonia build up. They really are going to need a filter so that this can be eliminated by the nitrogen cycle. In the meantime you are going to need daily water changes of 50 percent IMHO. EDIT And if you stop feeding them til you get it sorted it will help.
  10. Have you tested or had the water tested? What temperature is the water? Is there any exposed steel or metal sticking out of the concrete? Is your water supply town water or ??? If it's town water have you used a dechlorinator?
  11. Boiling it would kill the bacteria for sure - but it should clean it up if you are concerned about its condition. I think this is another area where hobbyists get ripped off into expensive "dirt and clay and rock" that goes in the filter.

    Sandy bottom??

Yes it probably should be washed however as it is for Africans who like hard water then salts are not going to be an issue. If you are confident the sand you are getting is clean you might be able to dump it straight in the tank with no filter etc and fill it one or two times stirring the sand up with a wooden spoon and waiting for it to settle before draining as much water out as you can. It would take a long time to bake enough sand for a four footer.

    Sandy bottom??

I just got some aragonite sand yesterday - it was not cheap. I am going to use it in my african tanks. It will help keep ph high by increasing Kh. It looks good to from the tanks I have seen. If you want to keep malawis go for sand and if you are getting it from the coast get as much shells as you can as they will increase the Kh in your tank -your africans will do better.
  14. I would have thought boiling your old media would clean it up good as new? Gotta be cheaper. In My CF 700 there was not enough bio balls and noodles to fill the baskets so I put them in the bottom basket and have pumice gravel in the middle - works a treat and cheap as.
  15. Hi Tezza welcome here Do you mean you don't change water and don't want to again? If so I'd name fishy Very lucky

    New Skimmer

    calm down lads -
  21. Why don't you change the inlet pipe then Ryan? I have changed the whole inlet side for larger diameter pipe and hose. It allows more water to get to the filter faster and slows the hoses blocking with slime. Lightproof hosing would be the best option as slime/ algae would be slower to buildup.
  22. Yes definitely go for two filters if you can afford it. My two cents are use a HOB to increase aeration and a canister. This way there is redundancy in case one filter breaks down or is switched off inadvertently.
