  1. After the death of my kids goldfish I am wanting to get some of these. The only place that I have found to have some only have 3 in store. How can I tell Male from Female? and would 3 be ok in a 5.7ltr tank? I can remove the gravel and add java moss. Not intending on breeding them but if it happened it would be a bonus cheers

    killies

in other words they will eat my guppies? or just the guppy fry? My tank is pretty heavly planted at the moment and I normaly put the female into a breeding trap to have her fry and the try is then put into the fry tank. I don't want to add them if they will eat my fish lol but if they would be totaly fine then I would like to consider adding them to my soon to be breeding setup cheers

I was wondering are Killies ok with Guppies? When I get my other tanks set up I will have one tank which will be almost like a community tank but it will be more of the guppies that I like. I have never seen Killies (well I don't think I have) at the pet store down here and it would be nice to maybe breed some and bring some new fishies to the people of southland. I like the look of them as they have so many different colours on their bodies (which is what I liked about the guppies). How do you breed these guys and what is the best way to raise the fry? Cheers
  5. Ok something isn't right here..... The new fish that I got for my daughter is now showing a couple of patches of this fluffly stuff (looked on net and sounds like fungus). I don't have the money to run out and get meds to treat it. I have salt (aquqrium salt), stress coat and malachite green. I have read that malachite green will help with external parasites and fungal infections. But on the bottle that I have it says to raise the temp to 28*C. I can't do that with goldfish. Will any of these help? It looked under the weather yesterday so I done a water change and it perked up after that but today I have noticed these patches. Yet the scales are still there (from what I can see). How can I help this wee guy/girl? We are heading off tomorrow for a weekend away and I don't really want to come back to dead fish. Cheers for any help on this one.
  6. are you meaning the normal bucket type that you use for water changes and things? If so, I just use the nappy bucket and no I don't wash nappies no more . Its a good 20 ltr solid bucket with a lid. I don't know where you can get these from now but you could try the baby centers, baby city, baby factory or the baby section of any other store cheers
  7. the gold fish died this afternoon when I got back from trading in some guppies to get another goldie. I will keep up with every 2 day water changes for the next week and see how things go with the new fishies cheers for all your help
  8. Well this morning things are looking a little more sad. The fish is sitting at the top of the tank breathing very slowly and bearly moving. It has three tails and one of them is looking kinda frayed at the edges. Is there anything I can add? I think what has caused this is that I left the carbon stuff in the filter way past its run out time and it has deposited toxins back into the water which has affected both fish as they looked as if they were getting affected wtih something not long after I got them. The replacement that I got on the weekend is doing fine but I have removed the carbon from the filter ages ago but I think that it may be to late for the other fish Once I have replaced this and they die off again I won't be getting any more goldies! lol cheers
  9. The test I done are pH and ammonia. They are two small comets (body will fit inside a $0.20 piece). Their tank is a 1.5 gallon (5.7 ltr "I think") hexagon tank. I will do a 50% water change tonight and stop feeding as you said and then give them a pea. I shall let you know how things go cheers
  10. yes the fish went to fishy heaven when it started to swim on its side but now my other daughters fish is doing it which is whats puzzling me. Water test came up all clear but it now seems as if its got a blister type thing on its head between its eyes. It will swim down to the bottom of the tank and hold there for a little bit but then float and bob at the top. This is really puzzling me. The tank has a filter and plants in it. I did notice that this fish wasn't as well as it could have been when the other one died. Would a 100% water change help? considering its goldfish and then add some stress coat and/or melafix? cheers
  11. well I went and got her another one this morning, I do water changes weekly since it is a small tank. It wasn't eating yet it was eating fine last night. I did water test and everything was fine. I guess its just one of thoes things. But she is happy with the new fishy that she picked out and now we got the problem of picking a name for it lol. cheers
  12. my youngest daughters comet isn't looking to good. When I first got them they were swimming about happily ( one fish for each daughter). The other one is still doing fine but this morning when I woke up this fish was sitting on the bottom and breathing very slowly. This is the fish that when the lady at the pet store caught it she squished it against the glass and I said to her that I didn't want that one now as it was missing scales but she said it would be fine just add some melafix to the water which I did when I got home. This was a good couple of months ago when I got these fish. But over the last fortnight or so I have noticed that its not opening its tail out (fan tail) and it seems stuck in one position and the ends have turned black. I noticed that the filter still had the carbon pack in it and it would be past its 3 months date so I took that out thinking that the carbon wasn't working any more and putting toxins back into the tank. If the fish is going to die I can handle that but would like to know why if anyone can shine some light on this for me. With the scales missing it never got an infection or open wound. It has now left the bottom of the tank and is now lazily floating behind the filter breathing still slow. any help appreciated. Cheers
  13. Hmmmmm to do that, I would have to put a divider into the 2ft thats for the fry to grow out in as the 22ltr tank that I am currently using for fry will become way to over crowded. Thanks for that caserole
  14. at the moment he is in a tank with some light coloured females (golden). Two of them have already had babies and I know that they are more than likely pregnant by another fish in the tank. As soon as some more virgin females come up in my fry tank I will add them to the albinos tank. After christmas I am getting one of my new tanks. It will be set up for the ablino. Got a question to ask though. With the fry, can the male fry only fertalise the females if their fin is developed or can they do that before its developed? I have noticed (watching my tanks for many hrs out of the day) that my young males are not interested in the females when they don't have that developed fin. Only once its fully developed do they start displaying for the females. If this is true then I am hoping with my fry tank (soon to move to a 2ft) I can remove the males before they can fertalise any females as the males tend to get some colour before females and their fin starts to point up I can then put them into the other fry tank and leave the females in the fry tank untill I decide which tank they will go into with what males Please correct me if I am wrong or going about it wrong. Cheers
  15. The reason for why it got my attention is that my female bristlenose started to act really strange. She was going around and around and around the filter and didn't look like she was slowing down. I have done the water change and its not quite 7ph but she has settled down. I just didn't want to lose my female which is why I asked. But if it won't harm them then I will try not to get to worried about it Cheers for that
  16. Cool I am hoping (after the "NO MORE TANKS" from my husband he has now suggested getting another 3 2ft tanks!!!) that I can keep all of one sort in one tank like my solid blacks in one, snakeskins/albinos in another and the fry will be in one as well and the rest will be in one tank with the main bristlenoses. So heres hoping to get some solid breeding sorted eventually. Fish room here I come!! haha Cheers
  17. ok I got a pic, blury as hell but it was taken with out a flash and its the best one I got that showed his red eyes. He is a shiney silvery colour with a hint of a yellow/green when the light reflects off him in certian ways
  18. YAY I went into the pet store today as I was wanting to get more half blacks if they had managed to get imports. To my supprise there was an albino male in there. My question is, if my albino male was to mate with a normal female what are my chances of getting more albinos? They didn't have any females to go with him but was told that my chances were high to get more albinos by just having a male. So the tank that was set up for my solid half blacks is now for the albino and I have put in 4 golden females. I shall let you know over the next few months what happens sooo excited YAY cheers
  19. Cheers Alan With the limestone chips how much would I add? Like would it be a small handfull scattered through out the tank or two cups scattered about? Cheers
  20. I have got the same thing in my 2ft tank. I have guppies and bristlenoses. Tap water is 7.4 but after a week my ph drops to 6.5. I have been told that baking soda can help keep the ph stable but have no idea how much to add to my tank of 90ltrs. I do have two pieces of driftwood in there which I am guessing is the cause but I don't want to remove the wood because I have bristlenoses in there (male and female and some bubbas). So would baking soda work and does anyone have any idea how much to add? cheers
  21. Cheers for that I am hoping to produce more black/blues and now maybe purple if it comes through. I am getting two more 2ft tanks like I already have. One for the fry to grow out in, one for my blacks and one for the rest. I have got females that have yellow/blue/blue,green/red,blue/black/purple tails. I am starting to get some very nice coloured youngsters which I might put up on trademe over the next month once they are a little bigger. Cheers :bounce:
  22. Well its not a flash male guppy but I did manage to get some lovely half black females with purple/black tails. I have got another tank set up and hoping to get another two 2ft tanks in the christmas holidays (YAY!!!). I am putting these females with my two solid blacks and hope to get some cool colours. Well heres a pic of the females but you can only see the purple in one female (due to angle, they are fighting over the bristlenose sinking tab). cheers
  23. I don't know if they are still there but I saw some moscow blue males on trademe for sale. I don't know if the auction is finished or not but you could try there. I sill don't have any blues yet myself but my husband has finaly let me set up another tank! YAY to house my blue/black males and selected females for line breeding. So maybe I can get some solid black bubbas soonish
  24. should I be doing this for my solid black male guppy? I don't know if its a pure strain or not and I don't have any of the origional females left that were half black either. If so how do I go about it as I don't know scientific names and things like that. And I am not very good at taking photos either lol cheers.
  25. Yeah I have seen the ones on trademe but there is also another little line that says they will not ship to the southisland which totaly sucks as that counts me out on some very lovely guppies. I have seen the blue ones as well as the cobras which I was interested in untill I saw that they won't ship down here. So yeah in a few months time when you get some bubbas let me know Maybe I may have some more black males that I could do a trade with or something cheers
