  1. so if I was to have a 3ft tank that is divided into 3 1ft sections would that mean that I would only need one heater in each end tank? And for a filter to get a powerful air pump and run 3 filters that way? The main colours that I really want to breed is my blacks and my golden with the snakeskin and when I breed the bristlenose I don't think that a 22ltr tank is really going to hold everyone lol One thing I have noticed with my fry to is that some of them seem to lose their dausal fin and anal fin and then their tail dissapears to a little skinny point and not long after that their scales puff out. I have no ammonia problems and the pH is fine. Just can't understand why this happens to some of them and not all of them. Could it be that they are the runts of the tank or they are just the weaker link? I am not to fuss as I don't end up over run with fry but out of about 20 fry I am left with about 5-10 at the most. I am not to worried about it but when I get into breeding for certian colours/looks I don't really want this big loss either. cheers
  2. but I thought that with putting that many dividers into a tank (using glass would be best I am guessing) wouldn't that mean seperate filters and heaters for each section? My tank is only guppies and 1 bn (soon to be 2 and hoping to breed them). My 2ft is currently divided with the snakeskin and my golden female and the new golden ones that I have gotten and the golden fry that are about 2-3cms long. In the bigger part of the tank I have the rest of my red/orange males with my multi coloured tail females. Now that I have done this I have lost my area for breeding my 1/2 black F with my 3/4 black M. Would it be ok to put her (after she has droped fry) into the breeding net (fabric one not solid plastic) with the male over night then let them go again? Or would this cause to much stress? I would like to breed that male with the black females to try and keep the black/blue colours comming. cheers
  3. so basicly I am shit out of luck unless I get a whole pile of tanks set up which my husband would definatly divorse me over. Guess I am just going to have to go by pot luck and see what I come up with. Tonight I have seperated some females which I would like to breed with my snakeskin into the divided off section and thoes that I want to breed with the orange males and my solid black male is in the other section. Will see how this goes for the next couple of months
  4. DAMN! Your saying that I am going to have to move north!!! The petstore down here has such plane boring guppies and very rearly have nice ones like that. The main colours we get down here are combos of yellow, orange, red and black all on the one fish. Normaly a light blackish colour body with yellow and orange fins or golden body with orange. Quite boring compaired to what you guys show off on here lol Must get some nice colour combos
  5. would the black vent be the tiny black spot at the back of them? I can only see that when the fish is swimming away from me. So if I was to put all my females in to the divided section of my tank with one or two males (the two that I want them to breed with) then I can have them pregnant from birth almost?
  6. That would be awesome I was thinking of putting all the fry that are of age to breed into the divided off section of my 2ft tank and adding the male I want with them for 1/2 a week but I don't want to put them in there to young. Wouldn't that hurt the girls ummm yeah hahaha.
  7. cool buzz so when can I put them with the male of choice? Like do I have to wait till they are of a certian age/legenth then put them with the male? Just that if I am wanting to really breed certian colours I want to get it right from the beginning cheers.
  8. yeah I know that much but my males don't develop their special fin untill they are about 2-3 months old. So I can't sex the males as easily as I can the females. My 2ft tank has a divider in it now and I have a 22ltr fry tank. The fry in this tank is lucky to be 1 - 1.5cm in legenth. There are no males in there that are developed and able to breed yet some females have a black spot in the grey fry. Would they still be virgins?
  9. I have got a number of fry which is comming up to 4 weeks. They are all in a tank by themselves with other fry. How can I tell a true virgin female? I thought that they couldn't breed untill they were about 3-4 months old (could be way off but read it in a book). I have some grey fry and the only way I can tell if they are female is from the black spot. Does that mean that they could already be pregnant if they have that spot? The golden fry I can't tell as their spot isn't black but pink/orange in colour and very hard to tell at such an early age. I am wanting some virgin females to breed with my snakeskin/cobra (what ever he is). cheers
  10. Still some awesome looking fish Love the one up the top
  11. WOO HOO I love the awesome shimmers of the snakeskin as they zoom about the tank. I would love to have some more
  12. I got one ages ago that died during that night. I now have one (on first page) which is yellow/green in colour and hoping to breed him. I don't know when I will actualy get fry from him but I am hoping I will let you know how things go. cheers
  13. HAHAHAHAHAHA Poo-in I have got some females like that whos tails show a splash of red, yellow and the lower half of the body a slight hint of blue. Can't wait till I get fry off them.
  14. well heres the funny thing about the LFS that I go to. Their guppy tank is listed as Imported Guppies. Yet I took them 11 fish and they put them in the same tank so they are selling off my guppies as imports. They don't have them seperated if any special ones like the snakeskins come in. It all and every guppy in the one tank. I have gotten a couple of females off a friend who has got two lovely snakeskins which he thinks may be offspring from them so I was hoping that if I breed them with this male then my chances might be a little higher to get the pattern on the body of fry. Now heres the next question. With fry of snakeskin when would their body patterns start showing? I have noticed that the first colour to appear on my frys tails is yellow then red. cheers
  15. I have just got a new male and I am having troubles with what sort he is. Is it a cobra or snakeskin? The picture is real shocking and its the best picture I could get before my batteries went flat. Hes a lovely yellow/green colour with the pattern all over his body and two black dots which is identical for both sides of him. As I said the pic is real shitty but its the best I could get before batteries died. It was taken with no flash as there wasn't enough batterie life for that and now the camera won't even turn on lol joys I am hoping to breed this with my golden female to continue the yellow colouration cheers
  16. I reckon it should be labled "False Albino" as it is not of true breed. But thats just my 2Cents worth
  17. I am afraid to say the chances are possible that yes the fighter done that. From what I have been told, male fighters find the bright colours of male guppies a threat (as in another male fighter) and as they would with another male fighter it would of attacked it. They are awesome fish but apparently not one that goes well with guppies.
  18. well mine isn't a pleco just a happy male Bristlenose Catfish. His bristles are just starting to split at the tip and he is cleaning his house. This is the house that I am hoping to get eggs in as there isn't really anywhere else for them to keep the eggs safe from the guppys who I am sure would have a go at pecking at them. Nothing like CatBrats pics but the best I can get with my little camera
  19. I got this little guy off MRSkz and totaly love his colouring so I thought I would share him just don't comment on the little peoples finger prints on the glass hehe.
  20. I have finaly got one baby male that looks like my 3/4 solid black/rich blue male with the big tail. I will go and get a pic of it Out of the few fry that didn't get culled from my golden guppy are showing signs of having yellow tails. Its very hard to tell whos female and whos male in this lot as none of them seem to show a black spot so I guess I will just have to wait till they are older. I am hoping that this attempt at the BBS will be more sucessfull than the last and I am also doing a little bit of an experiment.I have gone one set up with air flowing and the other just sitting with no air at all. So far both have got BBS swimming about and more hatching. Temp is sitting at 24-25*C with the bigger 15wt energy bulb. Right going to get pic of my new male which I will put in the livebearers section cheers
  21. Thanks for that Tanksman. I have never seen that thing at my LFS. The only thing they have for brine shrimp is a weighted rubber bottom thing with a cap in the middle that you screw your upside down coke bottle into. Thats it, apart from eggs and salt. Would there be any difference with using tonic salt and nomal table rock salt? There really isn't anyway I can put a light down low with out unscrewing the front of the unit and I don't want to do that as I am scared that it might fall apart on me!! But I have removed the airstone from the cap of the bottle and just got hose going into it so I will let you know how things go this time. cheers all
  22. Thanks for that Pegasus. I shall try that method this time for harvesting. I tried a coffee filter bag and it broke on me and in the fright of that giving way I then lost the container on the floor. I guess I might want to invest in a small torch that I can sit in the bottom of the hatchery to make the shrimp go towards the bottom. I have also noticed that most of my shrimp are white/cream in colour. Not the pink/orange that you mention. The way that my husband has made this hatchery box is that it has a piece of wood inside that is actually holding the bottles up. Its got two holes for a normal round coke bottle to sit into about 1/3 up from the base. Really good for my husband to do it. I was hoping to have two bottle set up 12 hrs apart or something like that. I shall let yous know how things go over the next 3-4 days. cheers for all your help
  23. ok this is the last straw!!!!   Apart from these stupid brine shrimp is there anything else that I can give my guppy fry to help them grow faster so then I can sell/trade them? I just lost my last lot of bbs all over the F'N floor and will now have to explain myself to my husband why the kitchen carpet is wet. It sounds and seems so easy to do these things but so far I have had nothing but bad luck with the whole setup and feel as if its a waste of money and time. I have taken the airstone out of the cap and the way that the box is set up the light sits halfway to top of the container so sucking them out from the bottom won't work for me. I have heard that when the fish eat the eggs that get into the tank that they are likely to get swim bladder disease/disorder (what ever it is lol), is this true? Can anyone suggest an easier way? I am hoping, now that I have taken the airstone out, I can just disconnect it from the air pump and let the water out through the tube and into a container hanging lower with a cloth over it if need be but I am sure I will still get some eggs that are unhatched into the tank. Cheers for any suggestions.
  24. cheers thanks for that. I guess this being my first time it will be a lot of trial and error to get what works best for me.
  25. ok how the hell do I go about harvesting these shrimps? I have got an over sized dropper and it seems that I am just making one huge mess out of it. I didn't have a very high hatch rate as I guess my eggs are stuffed from sitting on the store shelf for who knows how long. I have uped the light from an 8wt energy saver to a 15wt. The heat output is the same (20-22*C) is this still to cold for them? It is inclosed inside a hatch box. Would I be better with a low watt normal bulb? Tried a 60wt bulb but it damn near fried (if not did) the eggs as the water was VERY warm lol. So yeah once again how do I go about getting these things out with out getting to many eggs into my tank at the same time? cheers
