Well I got some bad news. It looks like my albino male is infertile. He has absolutly no interest in the females he is with. There is a female that had babies a good 3-4 weeks ago and she isn't even fat. I have been watching over the past week and not once seen him display for the females or chase them or anything. He just swims along side them and does nothing. Very dissapointed as I doubt that I will come across another albino male in a hurry unless someone out there has one to spare and willing to ship to invercargill. cheers

I noticed this morning that there are more and more wcmm fry in the tank lol. Since I am unable to get food setup for them I went out and brought the Wardley Small Fry liquid food. The ones that looked to of been at the bottom of the tank are now up the top. They are just sitting on the side not swimming about yet. How long does it take for them to grow? cheers :bounce:

What sort of light would be used if I was to make a rock pool sort of cold marine tank? I was thinking of only a little tank but thought that it would heat up like the tank that my wcmm's are in but thought that over summer the rock pools would heat up a bit anyway. But yeah I was just wondering what sort of kelvin rating would I be looking at for lighting. Cheers

The whole one side of the tank is a wall of Java Moss. I hope this will be enough. I will try and start some infusoria tomorrow morning. Does the banana skin need to be dried first? I only got one banana left haha Now I know what is ment by its very hard to find the eggs as the fry are sooooooooo tiny. I spent a good 20 mins watching and noticed that I had some more. Some on the other wall and some hanging off the Java Moss. They can't be that old as they are only sitting about an inch up the side of the tank YAY!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/penejane/085.jpg

I just discovered my first White Cloud Mountian Minnow fry!!!! I saw something this morning that looked shiney on the side of the tank and thought it might of been a new baby snail so I didn't think much of it but I had another good look this evening and the litthe shiney thing was still there and under much closer inspection I noticed the shiney thing was its tummy and then I saw the eyes and the very faint body outline! I am like WOO HOO. I sooo hope that they will do ok on microworms as I do not have any more bbs to hatch. I am soooooo :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Yes Caserole I have to agree with that comment about how the book doesn't do the fish justice. I have not seen the fish personaly but what I have seen in the books that I have gone through that they must have some real awesome vibrant colours and be awesome in any tank. They are one of the ones that I would love to get eventually. :bounce:

Cheers for that Alan. Would it be wise to use any form of substrate? marbles, crushed gravel, normal gravel or just a bare bottom tank? Do the species that I am after prefer mops to spawn in or what? I have found this link very usefull in the breeding of certian species as it has got what other people have tried and what their sucess was. They even have a male/female ratio of the hatch to which is pretty impressive. I don't know if you been to this site but I will put it up anyway. I just thought that it is very informative on the breeding side of things http://www.killi.co.uk/ But since it is in the UK I don't know if the same methods would be the same here. Cheers

Would Java Moss be ok along with Ambulia (excuse spelling) I have that growing like wild fire in my main tanks and with the fine leaves would this be suitable for these guys? I was hoping to do the three tanks with a different one in each but if its not possible then I will just use the one tank for the adults and the other tank to raise the fry in. This would mean that I can only have one species of killies. It would be awesome if I could manage two with a planted tank. I know that these tanks are not that big but it is the only thing that I can use that is fully covered at the top. For filteration I have two Elite Stingray 5. They are for 19ltrs. Would this be ok for the 15ltr tanks? or do they prefer low current? Cheers

I like the striatum, bitaeniatum and gardneri/albino. Is there a difference in sizes with these or something? cheers
-
What is the adverage size of adult breeding killies? Also how many could I fit in a 34W x 22H x20D cm tank? (15 ltrs) It has a tight fitting lid with an access point in the middle of the lid. The tank is plastic and was the cheap $9 ones from the warehouse. I currently have 3 of these so was wondering if I am able to keep adults with babies as the tank isn't big enough to float anything unless really tiny lol. But I am sure I can work something out. So yeah is this size tank ok and how many would be suitable in this sort of tank. Cheers :bounce:

Ok I have done a little bit of searching and have found the easiest one for me to do. Apparently you get a banana skin an put it in the bottom of a jar with cooled boiled water. You leave it for a few days and the water will go foggy. After that the water will clear up again and this is apparently the sign that infusoria are present. Has anyone tried this method? Cheers
-
how would that work? Do I just put that in a jar with a banana skin or something or just always buy that liquidfry stuff?
-
yeah I have been to that site a number of times. But it keeps mentioning to add a culture so since I don't have one to add (I think they got theirs from a pond or something). So yeah thats why I was asking cheers
-
Can anyone tell me a good way to start a culture. I hear that adding a banana skin to the bottom of a jar of water usually starts it but I don't know how sucessful it is so would like to know your guys input on it. Cheers.

Well all of the foggyness has totaly gone. Water is crystal clear again apart from the hint of yellow from the wood thats in there. So yeah. I still don't know what happened but all is clear now. Now to get the bristlesnoses breeding again Cheers
-
well heres the funny part. For some reason over the last 24 hrs my tank has started to clear up. It still has a green/yellow tinge to it but I guess that could be from the drift wood and the fact that I have removed the backing paper from the tank so there is a creamy yellow back ground now lol Thanks for all the info and support :bounce: :bounce:

If its to be a phostphate problem then how do I fix it? I will take some water in to be tested on friday. I am frequently sitting in front of my tanks having a good look about and mostly just watching my fish. Any solid bits of food is normaly at the front of the tank so it is easily seen if not eaten. The drift wood isn't that big and I can use a mirror at the side of the tank to see behind the wood very easily. My filter sponge is ALWAYS cleaned with the water that is syphoned out of the tank. My tank has been running since April this year. Thats what I find funny about it. It only gets sunlight directly on it for 30 mins in the morning if that but since it has moved more into summer the sun comes up in a different direction so its lucky to have 10 mins of direct sunlight in one corner. I doubt this to be the problem or I would of had it since early Oct (when we first moved here). Hope what ever it is won't affect the condition of the fish. Here is a link to a full tank shot. Sorry about the flash http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/penejane/083.jpg

My tank has been foggy like this for the past 2-3 weeks. I thought that it could be from to much waste in the water thats why I done a change but its made no difference. Thats why I am so worried about it because its been like this for so long. The fact that I had a guppy die this morning for no apparent reason (no mark or infections on the fish, wasn't dead long as it was still full of colour) isn't helping. If its an algae bloom then I can accecpt that and would take steps to correct it but I would of thought that over this legnth of time that it would now be a lot worse than it was 2 weeks ago. None of my other tanks are showing this foggy change so it can't be the water.
-
When I done my big water change (like a day or two ago) I gave the filter sponge a good clean out. The only ferts that I use in my tank are the fert sticks. They have never caused a problem before and they are supposed to be a once a year thing. I don't have a test for phostphate. The big water change was done when I removed some plants to put into my new 2ft tank. Thats why I wanted to give the gravel a good deep clean because there was less than half the plants left and to much waste. I will give it another couple of days and see how it goes. Cheers :bounce:

Hey there. For some reason over the last 2-3 weeks my tank has been looking very foggy/hazy. Water test are comming up normal and temp of 25-26*C. I have used the carbon and it didn't make any difference. What could be causing this. I do weekly water changes with my last one being the big one where I removed all the plants and done a good gravel vac deeply thinking that maybe I had excess stuff that wasn't being broken down or used by the plants. But that also hasn't made any change to the water. I can understand the colour being a bit off due to the dark drift wood I have in there but I can't understand the milky haze that goes with it. Cheers P.S I have been trying to upload photos to photobucket but while my husband is downloading I it won't let me do it so I will put pictures up tonight if required.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Hope your dad won't be to upset over it and I also hope there is a animal heaven :bounce:

That is my thought to on the albino guppies to. Not often seen in the LFS so I am wanting to increase that

Well with my new 2ft that I got on the weekend has been set up to house the solid half blacks and albinos. I have used fert sticks under the gravel to encourage plant growth. I have yet to put backing paper behind it but that will come shortly. My next tank which isn't untill next year will be to grow out the fry into seperate male/female sides so I can better increase my chances of selected colours http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/penejane/082.jpg Cheers

Southern Man I have added you to my msn if thats ok. I thought it would be easier to talk directly (well as direct as a computer can get) than pm messages. I don't know when I will be up in dunners but it would be nice to maybe drop by and see your tanks and your selection of killies and if I have things set up right I might buy some off you or eggs anyway hehe. So yeah just letting you know that penenolan is my email for msn so you know who it is Cheers

I don't know how it will work but I am sure going to give it a try
