  1. oh WOW!!! They are neat! Love the colourations in the last 4 pictures (might have to buy some off you at some stage! hehe) I didn't think we would have such nice ones available in NZ. Cheers
  2. Ohhh this sounds good. I soo can't wait till I am up north and get the chance to see these fish. I got two tanks in the setup (one cycling) so will have to see how things go Show us some pics of the tanks when your done Shane Cheers
  3. Mine is currently under the window sill and I have to say that my croaline algae doesn't like it at all. When the tank is covered in from direct light the coraline really takes off but when left uncovered and it get sunlight it is bleached by the next day. Yes heat is a big issue for my tank and I am thinking of moving it now for that reason. Hope that helps. Cheers

ohhh wow you still alive southern man!! Haven't seen you about lately. Hope things are keeping well.
  5. My fave would have to be ANYTHING that glows under the blue lights! I think that would make a striking effect with a tank full of zoas that had different colours that light up under the blue light. Just thought of it mainly for those that have Zoas that wanted to identify them. Cheers
  6. Can any of those Zoas be found in NZ already or do we only get the blan boring ones? I have seen some solid green ones but not to sure what ones they are off that site yet. Just interested as to who has what colours here. Cheers
  7. Also found this site for NZ nudibranches Don't know if they are in the personal aquarium or just in the sea. http://www.ianskipworth.com/suig/nudis.html
  8. Thought this might be useful for some of yous out there that keep these in your tanks. How many of them are available in NZ as the colours in some of these are totaly awesome. Cheers http://www.zoaid.com/index.php?module=G ... _itemId=15
  9. Yeah I know where your comming from Karma but these people no matter how much you try to say something is wrong it doesn't matter. On any given day you can walk in there and see at least 1 dead fish for every 3 tanks just sitting there. Some are half decomposed with fluffy bits all over them. You can't tell me that they don't check at least once in the morning and again at night for sick/dead fish. Believe me when I say that they think they are always right. I went in there to ask about wooden diffusers for the skimmer. I was told that I don't need one and that any airstone will work. I just need the right air pump. She then asked what size bubbles we were currently getting and said that we needed to add a valve to reduce the air flow to make smaller bubbles then it will work properly. Now that I have an air driven skimmer I can clearly say that no matter how hard we tried it wasn't going to work the other way! I have also been told by the same person there that I don't need all the fancy skimmers and stuff that you see on marine tanks. Just a wet/dry external filter like they run. Also you think that $50 is to high for a cleaner shrimp. Try $75 for here. Some times people can lead you so far down the wrong track that you give up to get back where you started from and never go down that path again. If it wasn't for the internet and the help of forums such as this one I doubt that I would be where I am now. Relying only on your LFS to point you right isn't always the best option. Cheers
  10. Well talking about retail how many of you would be happy having to pay $196 for a frag with 6 mushrooms on? I didn't think they were very nice either. Very white with just a hint of green. Also tried to sell me a coral frag that I tried to tell her was dead but she insisted it wasn't as it had a crab on it. I told her that its white. Its dead!. Also the other corals in there were showing major signs of bleaching. Her tanks DON"T have MH lights. Only fluros and she is trying to keep corals alive that require MH lights. How do you tell the owner of an LFS that they have a very bad setup for their fish as well as dead corals which she is trying to sell as live! haha
  11. Ok here are some closeups of njd's tank. Still learning the camera so they are not that great. Hope you don't mind njd I really like the last one as it shows the lines in the zoas that light up. Cheers I would show my tank but I have nothing apart from a couple of anemones to show. Hopefully when we get back from our trip to hamilton I will be able to get things in there
  12. I had a female sword who had fry but the male died (trio) so that female changed into a male. The anal fin develops before anything else then the tail forms its sword. So it could either of changed sex with a sword soon to follow or it could be a late developing male as they say. Good luck
  13. so its a good sign then if they are shedding their outter skins? Or is that a sign that something is wrong? Feelers that anemone I have never seen before apart from the one place that I went to. Bluff seems to only have the dull green ones. This one has a very nice green stalk with brown stripes, white tips and a very orange mouth. If I knew that they would survive it I could go and get a couple and send some up but I don't know how they will do but then again they can't do to badly as it was from the rock pools which allow them to tolerate low temps Cheers.
  14. Ok here is an updated pic of my tank taken all of a few mins ago. Eventually the crate will be moved over to a more central location with rock in front to hide the crate and to also give it a high and low area. In front of the over flow plate will be one large piece of base rock or 3 smaller pieces together to make one large one. I have yet to get the lights sorted which is why all the rock is to one side where my old lights are over them. Another power head will be put in after we come back from our trip up north. last pic was 8th of Jan. This is taken today, 17th Jan. Cheers
  15. I have for the past week kept 3 hermit crabs in my salt tank. They are doing a wonderful job of keeping the bottom of the tank and rocks clean of excess brown stuff. But today I noticed that I have what I am hoping to be the sheaded skin of a hermit crab. Do they shead their outer skin like shrimps do? I still have 3 hermits in the tank and one has removed its shell and gone to another one. I would like to think that its normal but I am unsure which is why I ask. On a lighter note here is one of the anemones that I have had for over a week now and still doing fine. Feeding by hand (long tweezers) big fat white worms. Collected from the rock pools of Colac Bay. It looks like a pretty daisy flower in the tank with its bright orange centre and white skirt. Cheers.

    Wish list

Alan the LFS had them months ago (easily 6+ and 80% of them showed some form of spinal deformaty (sp) that I wouldn't suggest anyone buying) I did post in here that that was all they had and that was all they have ever had in for as long as I have been keeping fish. I have access to some of the fish that are imported but it only ever seems to be the same type over and over again. Will have to see what the next fish list brings in but once the shop opens I am more than happy to buy off others (depending on the price tag) and do my best to introduce people down here to killies as well as type up and print out an information sheet for those interested or wanting to buy.
  17. Ok I got it going now. I added another air pump and its working sweet. Eventually I will get another pump to do it instead of two. I will look at taking another FTS over the next couple of days to show you all how its going. Starting to see some coraline algae growth which I am buzzing about so hoping that things will go better this time around. Cheers for all the information so far.

    Wish list

Well I can tell you right now that our LFS down here has only had killies once. They were clown killies. I asked if they could get any and they told me that its not worth it for them for the fact that they don't live long (guess they didn't research them) but two weeks later they had the clown killies in their tanks. I am soon to be opening my own shop and I would love to have a tank of killies and an information sheet to go with them and be able to offer those in the far south the chance to have such awesome fish. I don't know what killies are available (only the few that I have looked for) but I have seen many sites that show such awesome colouration and fins that I have yet to see (via these forums) or hear about. Cheers.
  19. Ok I got the skimmer (thanks VERY VERY much Reef). Now I don't know if its to tall for my tank or if my air pump is to slow (150lt/hr). It has a small tube up the middle with a bigger one around that with the cup on top. Now sitting in my over flow the water doesn't come up to the inside tube and when I sit it in the actual tank the bubbles are pushed back down into the tank. How is this supposed to sit so I can get it working right. Cheers.
  20. Ok after having a close look at my tanks yesterday and doing my normal check I have noticed that my sword plant has got a thick stem sticking out with what looks to be buds forming. It hasn't reached the top of the water yet and I was wondering what it is that I am to expect and how do I get it to produce more plants? Do I keep the stem weighted down so it will produce leaves or let it flower then put it back under water? Any help would be great thanks. Cheers.
  21. hehe any chance of catching some and sending them south? Would be awesome breeding them up knowing that they are 100% kiwi Cheers
  22. I would just like to let people know that our LFS has True albino guppies in stock. I don't know what price they are but I am guessing they are about the usual $10-$12 mark. They are quite small, only about 1 inch including tails. Tails are not that big. I am not sure if its a mix of males and females but they did have a good doz or so in the tank. Some look a bit deformed as in hump in back and very thin stomachs. I am willing to go and get them for thoes that want them but shipping is a killer. Just thought I would let yous all know. Colour is normal yellow colour, tails are almost colourless with just a hint of white/yellow. Personaly I don't think they look that nice for albinos but thats just me. Cheers.
  23. Because I don't know where to buy one. Most of the ones that I have seen on the net require pumps for water in and water out. I am wanting to add this to the over flow section of the tank which is why I thought that skimmer stated earlier would work well. Secondly I don't know of anyone that would have one second hand. Husband is working franticly to get his to work but I don't think it will work untill we get a wooden diffuser for it. Cheers though Reef.
  24. http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.p ... opic=59497 WOW!! I can't believe the work this guy has done to his tank. Main thing I wanted to point out is the skimmer hes made. As we speak my husband is working on something similar but I think we really need the wood stone as it seems the normal grey air stone bubbles are way to big to get it to work. I don't know if our LFS has the wooden ones (not that I have seen anyway) I was wondering where I could get them online and how much I would be looking at. Cheers.
  25. ok so if I was to add another 500ltr/hr power head that should be pretty ok for this setup? Next question would be where do I put them? I have the HOB filter at the back of the tank with the inlet in the over flow and the outlet spraying back into the tank and the power head is at the right hand side of the tank spraying back along the back wall. This is the one area I have trouble with. Where do I put the flow points so I don't end up creating a tornado in my tank? I have also been told about coke bottle skimmers. How does this work? Can anyone find me a link on how to build one as I am having a hard time finding one on the net myself. Husband wants to have a go at building one for me. Cheers
