  1. Yes the snakeskin is in the divided off section of the tank with my other snake skin and over a dozen females for the two of them I have only put in the females that I want them to breed with so I hope that my chances of getting more snakeskin will be higher as the females are golden/yellow As for the bristlenose no I won't be able to get another female and yes it is one female and one male. I only have a 2ft tank which has a divider about 1/3 of the tank. There is no ammonia and pH is fine. The temp is about 25-26*C is that ok? what other things could I do to help them to breed? There is two pieces of driftwood in their section of the tank as well as a ceramic cave which my male used to live in. I have added some melafix to the tank this morning. So I guess I will wait it out for the next couple of days and see how things are then cheers
  2. ok since no one could give me any information on what to expect from introducing a female bn to my male I have now got a female with riped fins and tail. Should I take her out or push through it and hope that they will settle down? They are both about 3 inches long but all my male does is swim about the tank untill he finds her and then he jumps at her (best way I can discribe it) and she takes flight and it starts again with him going about the tank till he finds her. He has been more active these past few days then I have seen him before. Would it be wise to remove the female and let her recover or leave her there?
  3. 8) CONGRATULATIONS 8) See if you can get a pic of the wee girls and guys
  4. Ok now that I got my female. She has been on the other side of the divider so she wasn't put in straight away with the male. But I have put them together tonight and I was wondering what is the normal behavour for these two? Also what is their breeding behavour like? What am I to expect with these two meeting each other? So far I have seen my male what looks like chasing her about the tank so any information on what to expect would be greatly appreciated cheers
  5. yeah I have had the same thing but with my camera I am totaly unable to get a good photo like you did of such tiny worms. I had it to a point where my whole tank glass was covered with these things normaly first thing in the morning but when more light came in they dissapeared down into the gravel. I know that I have some still in there but they are no were near the numbers they used to be.
  6. Well I thought that if I was to do enough and freeze it then I will be able to feed them the brine shrimp while the next lot are hatching out as it takes 2-3 days for me to hatch out a new lot and I noticed last time that when I took a little bit out and a little bit more the water started to go really smelly and off colour by the 5th day (from first setup) so to avoid this from happening again I thought it might be easier to just take them all out once hatched and freeze them but I just wanted to dbl check if this was suitable cheers
  7. well I have been giving it another go and tried it with some backing soda and man I got more than my fish will eat lol so I was asking is there any chance of freezing bbs in to ice cubes once strained out??
  8. I am getting my female bristlenose today and I was wondering that once the eggs have hatched and I fished out the bubbas and put them into the fry tank is the temp of 27-28*C ok? I have put the temp up as it has help eliminate needle-tail with the addition of Malachite Green which I have stoped using since the water change on the weekend as I have gone all week with out it reaccuring (YAY!!) so would this temp be ok for baby bns? Cheers

    algae

is the green slimy stuff also long and stringy? In my fry tank I have notice this develop on the top half of my heater then it has attached its self to the wall behind and in to the corner and now its on my plant in that corner. I have pulled as much of it off as possible and I am hoping that once my bns have bubbas I was going to put them in there hoping to clean it up. Would they clean it up or would I be needing to do a big clean out? When I had the warm white light on it it was just a small green carpet looking area now that I have chaged the bulb to a bright white (6400K) it has taken off big time. Is this the same thing you have? if now how could I treat it as I have a dozen or so fry in there at the moment with more comming. cheers
  10. I vaccum the tank every time I do a water change which is every 2 weeks. My water pH and ammonia are fine and stable (test before and just after water change and no change) Wouldn't the driftwood of been leaking tanins from the beginning and not just now? If it is the drift wood then I am not to worried as I just wanted to make sure that what ever was causing it wasn't going to harm the fish. I might give activated carbon a go (just get a little packet as it only last about 3 months apparently) to see if that will keep the water clearer than what it is at the moment. Its just that the water looks dirty because of the colour (not cloudy at all) and makes me think that the tank is dirty and that anyone else who sees it would think its dirty to lol cheers
  11. I have had drift wood in there for ages so why would it start now? I will wait for some more suggestions about the salt and the carbon before I go and get some. Cheers tho
  12. I would like to know why my water goes from crystal clear after a water change to a yellow/brown colour (looking from the side) with in about 3-4 days? I do a water change once every 2 weeks and do the filter at the same time. I have drift wood in there for a while now and never had this problem before. Also if I was to put a little pouch of activated carbon in my filter would this help keep the water clear? Would it remove the salt thats been added? Any help is appreciated. cheers
  13. ok now lets break this down to the understanding level of a blonde. Not that I am blonde but I find it easier if its explained that way. What is needed? as there are a lot of things that I have never heard of before with freshwater tanks. So besides tank and water what else..... How small can I go safely? and can someone show me why you need holes drilled? cheers
  14. Well I have spent today reading up on the setup of marine tanks and MY GOODNESS! Its worse than a science class!! I guess there will never be a marine tank in my house Guess I had just better stick to my guppies! lol
  15. lol jetskisteve only prob is that I am in invercargill lol LOOOOOONNNNNGG way away from auckland
  16. HOLY CRAP! Thats more than my 90ltr tropical tank! If I was to do one I would probably only want a clown fish or two as our petstore doesn't have much in the way of marine but I do like the looks of these little crab like things. They are long and skinny and look like a mini cray that are red with white stripes. Don't know what they are exactly but they look neat. My husband is a plumber so I will be able to get the plumbing gear for free or very close to it lol. I have a dremel/mulit tool thingy but I would be to scared to cut glass! ( might leave that for hubby to ) What are the holes for may I ask? and does it have to be that sort of filter? Think I am better off sticking to tropics
  17. Well I have lost all but a dozen fry to needle tail/pin tail. I went to my LFS and they gave me Malachite Green because it was the only thing that could be measured for a 20ltr tank. All the other meds were for about 80ltrs and had to be measured and since it was fry they said that it was harder again. For the first week they will be fine but then over the following 2-4 weeks their tails thin out from a nice rounded C look to a < look and then their top and bottom fin (dausal and anal) clamp up against the body and basicly dissapear and then their scales start to stick out around the tail and about a day or two after that they look soo sick that I end up chucking them out. I have salted the tank and raised the temp to 27*C (even the bottle says 28*C) So before I treated the tank with this stuff I then removed all thoes that look infected with what ever the hell the problem is and kept the ones that looked "normal". I will keep working with this Malachite Green stuff for a week or so and see what happens. I have got a female that is due to have babies anywhere between this weekend and next. I will keep them in the main tank untill I can be sure that they will be fine in the fry tank. Any other suggestions as to what could be the problem or what I could try to fix it? cheers
  18. http://honors.montana.edu/~weif/firstta ... ator.phtml thats the site that I used to measure how many ltrs/U.S Gallons. don't know if its right or wrong but its what I have used lol cheers
  19. I know this may sound stupid but how much does it cost to set up a tank like that? It doesn't seem very big (some tanks I have seen I could lie in as a coffin!! . I am only doing freshwater tropics and wouldn't mind looking into a marine one but only on a small scale like this one. Also how hard is it to maintain a tank this small? cheers
  20. I don't know if this is of any help but while I was looking up pin-tail/needle-tail for my guppy fry (losing a heap each week) I also came across this.......... Guppy Disease There is actually a disease caused by a protozoan that is more commonly seen in guppies than in any other fish. This is a tiny parasite that attacks the skin and may even reach as far as the muscles or bloodstream. They may get large enough to resemble ich and the scales may protrude, swimming is difficult and the skin usually falls off as well. If this is not taken care of quickly it can spread throughout the tank and be very difficult to control. Some treatments that should work are Malachite Green, Copper (try Aquarisol), and Formalin (use this with caution). Clout is a good name-brand remedy which should also take care of it. This disease should not occur in a clean, warm, guppy tank. I got this from...... http://guppyplace.tripod.com/Parasites.html Hope this helps anyone. cheers
  21. Cheers for that. At the moment my brine shrimp has been put on hold untill I can get a longer air hose as I have re aranged things but I got that today and hoping to get it up and going again but all they get is finely crushed flake at the moment and thanks to my two girls my origional baby food (F"N EXPENSIVE) ended up all over the floor with vicks vapo rub! not a good combo for the fishies. I shall see how things go. I done a water change today so I will do another one on Monday cheers
  22. Well I hav salted my tank and after almost a week I have just culled 20 fry their top and anal fins just end up clamped up against their body and then disapear and their tails thin out to a little point then their scales on the lower half of them then fray out and not long after that they are dead my ammonia is just reading and my ph is 7-7.5 temp is 25*C. Is there anything else that could be causing this? I have stress coat, stress zyme and melafix. Would any of these help or would it be drowned out with the salt thats in there? My directions on the salt is 1 rounded tablespoon per 20lts the tank is about 22 ltrs so I treated for 20 any help on this would be great. I don't want to have this high cull rate when I get into breeding blues and snakeskins
  23. that sounds like a pet store we have down here. Called Wet Pets in invercargill. Anyone who buys their fish from there have to be mad. There is always at least one dead fish in every tank. The light is so poor you may as well be looking into a dark room on some of the tanks. Then there is the algae! MY LORD! I have never seen such a filthy tank before. To see the fish in the tank you got to look through a corner where the algae isn't and its only by pure luck that the fish come past that corner for you to see them. There are no plants (not even fake) or ordaments in the tanks (east rd has either a plant or little ordament in every tank) the fish are swimming about with a look of BUY ME BEFORE I DIE. The guy that is always there tells you nothing but hot air when it comes to tropical fish. He told me that I needed my tank to be 60% planted before I added any fish or the fish would die. What a pile of fudge is that! Personaly I would like to report him to the spca but as long as the fish are in water I doubt that they will actualy do anything about it. But yes I do agree that some people have no idea about the business they run.
  24. yeah I did do that lol but I haven't lately. Both of my tanks used to be salted but when a water change is done I keep forgetting to add salt or topping up with salt and with 3 kids 5 and under its kinda easy to forget such things lol but I will get back on top of it and see how it goes Cheers
  25. I am hoping now that I have a dedicated fry tank that more fry would be saved as before all fry were in the main tank with the adults and I guessed that they were being picked on which caused this to happen and their tails were always eaten so I hope that the loss won't be as high over the next month or two
