Wanting to know what types of plants for Low Light
PENEJANE replied to PENEJANE's topic in Aquatic Plants
Cheers for the feedback but have decided to take the sand out of my fry tank and just leave the bottom bear. I was hoping to have the female bn in there and to breed them when I want them to but have decided that I am since I am going to be putting a divider into the 2ft tank I can then seperate them that way. The divider is to allow me to breed females with selected males after they have had their fry I have now finaly got one 3/4 black male just like my big one which I am very happy with I just hope that my 1/2 black female stays alive as her back has droped after her last lot of fry but she is still swimming about happily and eating with the rest of them -
I know that Java Fern/Moss are apparently good for low light but I am unable to get that from my LFS and they won't get it in for me special either its a matter of waiting for them to get more plants from their supplier and for me to get there on the right day and time to check what they have. I am considering taking out my plastic plants in my fry tank and adding live ones to help use up the bristlenose waste. I have sand substrate in this tank so I would like to know what low light plants would still grow fine in this. I don't want to disturb the sand by taking it out and adding gravel underneath or things like that as I don't have enough gravel to do this. Any help is greatly appreciated. Tank is for guppy and bn fry Cheers

LMFAO I know absolutly nothing about killies so I think I will stick to my guppies. At least I know a few things about them now Husband is slowly accecpting the possibility of more tanks (mini fish room) but that won't come in untill we are settled into our own home
-
I don't have any killie fish to have eggs to incubate lol and no my husband will not buy that as a good excuse to get another tank! haha Lets hope that this works tho eggs are way to expensive to waste! lol
-
well I don't know how well this first lot is going to go considering I had a 60wt bulb in there and probably boiled the eggs! haha anyone got toast! But replaced it with a 5wt fluro energy saver bulb and the temp is between 26-30*C so heres hoping Maybe I should get my husband to make these up and sell them on trademe ! haha could make a killing I shall let you all know how it goes over the next day or so as I think I fried this lot haha

When is this Dunners tank thingy?? I would only need one female BN as I only have a 2ft to house it and I don't know how it will go having two bn's in one tank like that but being female they ain't fussy unlike the males so I guess two would be ok. I will keep you posted as what is happening with this other one. Cheers again Caryl
-
Thanks for the thought Caryl but there is no way I can get to dunners. I have been offered a female about the same age that may be on a perm lend kinda thing so I will let you know what happens Thanks again for thinking of me Caryl cheers

Well my husband has been a busy man today and made me a hatch box for my brineshrimp eggs. The pictures are crap (as usual with my camera) of what he has made for me.
-
Well I have put my male into the breeding tank and over night he has fanned out all the sand from under one end of the drift wood and has made that his new home. Its really neat watching him fan the sand out of the way. Seems he is really enjoying it in there. Now to find him a lovely little girlfriend and he can make his cave a home

Would they still breed if I had them in a 20ltr tank? I have moved my male bristlenose over to the fry tank where he can stay with the eggs with out being bugged by the bigger guppies and will put the female in the main 2ft tank and only put them together when I want to breed them. So is it ok to get them to do their thing in the smaller tank so I don't have to later disturb the eggs or would I be asking for trouble? Just thought it might be easier this way.
-
Cool buzz Next question. Since I have two tanks (main and fry tank) is it ok if I was to put a female in to the fry tank to help keep that clean? I have never seen my male attack any fry so I doubt that I would have any worries with a female in the fry tank but thought I would ask first. This way I can put them together to breed and keep them apart when I don't want them to breed lol. cheers
-
well I doubt that if I add anything new for a cave that he will take to it. I have this ceramic rock formation thing where it looks like a mini mountain with a hole inside it. There are no other exit holes apart from this one main one and I can't really see inside it. Would it be wise to remove this and put in a small terricota pot or something? Also would it be ok to leave the bristlenose in the main tank. There are only guppies and 3 baby mollies in there. I know that you need to have the male stay with the eggs so I guess once the eggs hatch that I am to then move them to the fry tank? cheers

I have a male bn and would like to breed him. He has many bristles on his nose but they are not very long yet still easily seen. When will I be able to breed him with a female? I am not sure on legenth as of yet as he is always on the back glass and through the water he appears bigger lol. cheers.

HAHAHA Talk about a topic hijack! Anyway the only strain of fish that I have that seem to be maybe classed as pure is the 1/2 black (I got a pic of my main male on here somewhere in the livebearer pic section) My last female has had her fry but her tail has droped big time so hoping to get some straight black out of her fry (female) to breed with the 1/2 male to get more of that breed. I am needing to get a tank divider in my main tank for this (cheaper set up than a new tank) so I shall keep you posted as to whats happening cheers

AWESOME!! Wonder if I could get my husband into making the corner one

cool buzz. We are now stuck though. As we don't know wether running a 60w bulb 24 hrs a day will use more or less power than a 100w heater which switches off once at temp. Husband has got some stuff sorted for a hatchery box but don't know wether to go ahead with it or to get a small tank with a heater in it.

The eggs I got were on a shelf above the freezer for all the frozen foods. The shop isn't well heated and its right by the door. Going to see if someone will go half with me in a tin of Alans (I think its him haha) eggs but that is if he will half it for me then send it as I don't have containers suitable for that amount or to hold things of such tiny size.
-
yeah I saw a couple of things wriggling about but that was it. Most if it was just eggs and when I went to tip the water out into a coffee filter bag all I got was a pile of eggs and couldn't see the few that had hatched so totaly upset I just biffed the lot. Yeah thats what I was going to look into where its long enough to hold a heater yet small enough with an air pump to still move the water about.
-
well that lot got tiped out Going to look into a plastic container which I can add a small heater to keep the temp at 28-30*C (or is this to high?) The bedside lamp only managed to get it up to 22*C which I felt just wasn't enough and having the light turned off at night as its in our bedroom ment that the temp then droped down to about 15*C so the only way I can make sure that its going to work is to get a smallish container and put a heater in it. Or I could wait a centry for my husband to make the hatchery box but I don't want to wait that long. I shall let you all know what ends up happening. Untill then the eggs are just going to have to sit in the fridge.
-
I have now got a whole pile of floating brown eggs. Does this mean that I failed? or are the shells brown after they have hatched? I turned the air off lastnight and had a look and noticed I had a few swimming about so I left them over night and hope to have more this morning. Not going to do any more untill we either get a small tank with a heater set up or a hatch box sorted.
-
well I think I am finaly having something happen The room temp is about 14-15*C and the temp in the bottle with the lamp on at present is sitting at 21-22*C so lets hope this will work Brine shrimp eggs are to expensive to waste! lol
-
kk cool Now my last two questions which have got me confused... Does it matter if the light gets turned off at night? The lamp that is being used at the moment is my bedside lamp which will only get turned on again at about 6.30-7am. I know that the temp will drop but we do have a heater in the bedroom. I will look into moving the setup eventually where the light can stay on 24/7. Question 2 I got the salt water down now but I have heard some people say to add baking soda to help keep the pH 8+ to help the shrimp hatch. Is this necessary or can I go with out it? Cheers for all the help so far. Things don't seem so horrible now lol
-
what salt do I use? I have been told Tonic salt? Is this correct or do I need normal table salt?
-
its for my guppy fry and I have put my bedside lap next to them but the lamp is up on a book to make it higher and I have covered the lower 2/3 of the bottle with tinfoil but the light is comming down from above and so far the temp has gone from 14*C up to 19*C in just a few hrs so lets hope that it might work. I will look into getting water from the sea in future The container of eggs that I got were sitting on a shelf. I hope that I still manage to get at least 70%-80% hatch rate. I will talk to my husband once this lot has run out about getting a tin off you next time so let me know when they are up again and I will see if I can afford it at that time unless I still have heaps left over from this tub. Should I put baking soda in the water? if so how much? I have been told that this is what keeps the pH 8+ which is necessary to break down the shell to help the shrimp hatch?
-
ummm I have all that but the bedside lamp is one of thoes touch lamps with a 60WT bulb in it. I can't see how that will heat the water and keep it heated to at least 24*C. The lamp is used for me to see at night when I feed my son so it is turned off during the night mostly. Do they need this light 24 hrs a day or can it be switched off at night? BTW I have also read on some sites to use baking soda in with the eggs. Is this necessary? According to the pack its 2TBL spoons of salt to 1lt or water. I have been told to use Tonic salt.
