if your talking about my solid black male with the huge tail then yes I still have him. Hes my pride and joy and right after him is my green snakeskin. I would love to have 2 more tanks set up then I could seperate the black male with some females to improve on and the other for my snakeskin. I have found that if my dark females mate with a male that is red or orange most of the bubbas will end up with red or orange colours which sucks. I am down to only 1 orange and 1 red at the moment so I hope that with all my females that I get some better colours come through I will have a whole pile of young guppies for trade/sale (or take into east rd pets) in about a month or so. Already showing colours but will wait till they are a little bigger. If you have some nice ones Werner I would love to look into getting some bubbas off you at some stage, depending on the colouration of course Cheers
-
One big problem there though Werner. There is no way of me getting to chch and back lol and if I knew you were going I would of gotten a cheap tank off trademe for you to pick up (if you could). How did you get them? Did you go up or did you get someone to post them down? I would love to get some more nice males and females. Our LFS isn't importing no more at the moment and relying on others to bring in theirs so the quality isn't very nice at the moment. cheers

I could get my mum to get it who lives in hamilton but I am still stuck on the fact of how the heck do I get it down here? A whole 2000kms! no fair!! :bounce:

DAMN!! all these free tanks and there is no one close enough to me!! man this sucks!! I almost feel like making my husband move back up north!! just so I can have free tanks
-
LMFAO nice try caper Nothing is ever free, there is always a catch. In this case how the hell do I get it to invercargill from the top of the north island lol
-
 grrr don't rub it in!! lol I used to live in hamilton 3 yrs ago but moved to southland for my husband (took up a farmng job which didn't work out). I have seen a lot of tanks in hamilton and auckland for real cheap. So far the cheapest I can get is a 3ft for $75. Its the same with fish also. On trademe there are lots of awesome fish but most of them then state "will not ship to the south island" and its like geeez that sucks. I am looking into getting a 3ft at some stage but just don't know when. Got to let the bills from moving house settle first Thanks for the offer though
-
LMFAO Chimera I don't own a 3ft and the only 90 ltr tank I have is my tall 2ft which I am not going to empty out for a marine lol. Guess it will just have to wait

For a test run I have a small 20ltr tank. Would this be ok for a very small test run to see how things will work? For a filter I was going to add the small stingray type. Or would a small sponge filter work just as well as I have a spare pump. As for anemones I was going to find thoes that are already on loose rock that I can pick up and add to the tank and just the small crabs (smaller than 5 cents) and maybe a couple of snails or small shrimpy thingys lol. It all comes down to what I can find at the time I am down there. So yeah thats my goal for now. If the small tank would be fine then I might consider giving it a go this weekend. Gives me something to do and focus on cheers for all the info

I wasn't thinking of keeping corals as such. Just some rocks from down at the beach (riverton rocks for thoes that know southland) with some simple crabs, snails, starfish and the normal little anomies or what ever they are that stick to the rocks. If I was to have fish it would be the simple sprats caught in the bait catcher so no hooks required. I wasn't thinking fish and corals for this tank. Just a little chunk of southlands rock beach in a tank I am guessing that lighting would still be required so for this sort of setup what would I be looking at? what kelvin/colour spectrum and how many watts per ltr? cheers
-
so Caryl all you did was use a normal filter (and heater if I wanted it heated) in a marine tank? How did you create current or did the filter do that? If its that simple then why do you need skimmers and all this other stuff? BTW how does a chiller work and what does one look like? We are not far from the sea either (just on the other side of town really) so I can get sand, rocks and some crabs, snails and maybe the odd starfish from there? If I can do one like caryls with out all the extras then I will seriously give this a go just need to know more about it. cheers

I would like to know what is the basic equipment that would be required to do a basic 2ft tank. Husband seems interested in the idea. Also how much more difficult is it to maintain compared to a freshwater tank?
-
Thanks for that I guessed it was a far fetched idea or many would of done it by now. I would really like to get my hand on some albino guppies and more snakeskins but the LFS we have won't get certian guppies for us. Its more of a Pot Luck Bag of fish lol but thanks for the heads up. :bounce:

I would like to know the low down on importing guppies. I have seen many sites that show guppies for sale but how would I get them to NZ? I am not looking at a huge bulk look but just some for myself. Any information on this would be greatful. Cheers

Well it finaly happened. Even though my husband said "NO MORE FISH!!" I went out and got one anyway! lol We call him Bruce for Bruce Wayne hehe. Stupid I know but my daughter named her gold fish cinderella! He looks a lot more purple in colour than bright blue but thats the flash for ya lol. Enjoy

I have found that my bristlenoses change colour depending on where they are in the tank. When on the driftwood they normaly appear very dark in colour but when on the gravel they go blotchy and the same applies for the male on his cave (he goes blotchy) so it could just be a camoflarge effect. Or I could be way off and got sick fish but they are still alive and breeding hehe :bounce: (love this new smiley!!) cheers

Well the move went good and well. My bn eggs hatched sunday morning at some stage as I woke up to about 8 babies. I managed to fish one out and put it in the fry tank. I have seen it in there over the past couple of days but haven't seen one in the main tank and today I haven't seen the other one in the fry tank. Would they just be hiding or are they gone? All that I have in the tank besides bns are guppies. Cheers. How soon can I expect them to lay eggs again?

I could be WAY off here but from some pictures that I have seen on the net it could be a peppermint pleco. I also know that they don't grow very big either (15cm). They are as common in australia (apparently) as the normal bristlenoses are here in NZ. What I have seen from the peppermint is that its body is black with white/cream coloured spots. But as I said I could be WAY off lol. I was going to say a gold nugget but the only reason why I didn't as I thought that they have a large yellow band on their top fin and tail. Here is a link to a peppermint pleco http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/lo ... /189_f.php

I know this may sound stupid but how small/big are the babies when they hatch? I have got my male faning my first lot of eggs and I am curious as to what to expect. I am hoping that they will hatch over the next couple of days. The male has come out once to shoo off some nosey fish that kept going into his cave lol apart from that its faning his fins off cheers

Well from what I have been told our LFS has trouble getting females because they get held up with some form of authorities and end up dying before they reach the tanks at the store yet the males make it through with a snap of the fingers. But my question about female fighters is are they able to go into a guppy tank? I know that males can't because they find the big tails of the male guppies a threat and attack. But was wondering if this rule applies for females? Cheers.

Well this is going to sound funny but since the house is just up the road ( 5 min walk max) I was going to put a board in the pushchair and put the tank in that so I can wheel it up lol That way I can carefully get it down the 3 front steps and up the 3 steps at the other place If this is a silly idea please let me know. I am open to all options untill friday lol. cheers
-
I was told that if I leave the gravel in there that the base of the tank could break :-? All that is being done is that its being unpluged, empty out and then taken up to the new house and set up. So hopefully it won't be to long. I am almost tempted to go and buy a skateboard (cheap warehouse job) to help move the tank about lol. I might be able to get someone to help me yet but I am planing to do it alone just in case no help is available

This nappy bucket is used only for the fish tank so no chemicals have been in it. With the nappy bucket and two 15-20 ltr plastic tanks I am sure I can save a good amount of water and just make it like a water change of some sort! lol Well wish me luck and I will let you all know how it goes. I am hoping to use one of the plastic tanks to house the bristlenose and his cave so hopefully there won't be too much damage done. Cheers

Ok I am moving house this comming weekend. I have got a 2ft tank (60Lx50Hx30D cms) According to my LFS I have to totaly empty it out, plants, ordaments, gravel the works to move the tank. I am fine with that but I am worried about my new bn's that are due to hatch at this time and I will be on my own (my kids are 5 and under lol no help there) I have a great big 20ltr nappy bucket that I am going to put as much water in as possible along with the fish and plants. Would I have to wash the gravel when I do this move? Would it be wise to save as much water from the tank as possible? I am hoping to save at least half the water. Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to lose any fish if possible. Cheers

Well after watching him all day I am at the conclusion that finaly I have eggs!! wether they are all good I don't know as I can't see them and I don't want to trouble him while hes doing the best he can. He hasn't come out for even a bite of food and I am having a hard time aiming food into the hole of the cave lol but I do get it right by the door. I noticed him like this today so I don't really know how long he has been in there total but hopefully by the end of next weekend (weekend we move and hope not to do any harm) I might see some bubbas moving YAY sooo excited

I noticed this morning that my male was hiding out inside his cave. He would poke his head out as to have a look around then go right back to the same spot. Its a spot that I can't see apart from his tail sticking out. He didn't come out when I did a water change and I didn't want to move the cave just incase. Could this be a sign that there could be eggs in there?? I am sooooo excited. Hes been in there all day apart from comming out to clean around the entrance then goes right back to where he was. His tail is always moving.
