  1. Yes I have spoken to both of them and none of them have anything yet. Thats why I was asking who else has stuff. I am hoping to go and see southern man over the holidays but since he is working and my husband being made to go on call for a week during his holidays (totaly sucks) I don't know what our chances are of actualy getting to see Southern Man. I just wanted to know who had what from on these forums. Cheers
  2. Hey all once again I was wanting to know who has what eggs available at the moment. I have joined the NZKA and would really like to give this a go. So if you could please let me know what is available (so I can look them up) and if possible prices of eggs and shipping. Cheers
  3. No they didn't. But I will be going back and finding out more about them. I will let you all know brand names and specs and stuff as soon as I find them out also Cheers
  4. Apparently according to my LFS in about 3 weeks they are getting these new chillers in which are only 1/3 of the normal price. So your looking at about $150-$200 for a chiller. So when I find out more about these I will let you all know. Cheers
  5. You say that you change the filter wool everytime you do a water change. If you are changing all of it then that could be your problem as every time you remove the old wool you are removing the good bacteria that has formed in there to maintain the tank so in other words your tank is always trying to cycle. Next time you do a water change just rinse the filter wool in some tank water (in a bucket) and put it back into the filter. If any of this is wrong someone Please correct me. Apart from that I can't see any other reason why your fish keep dying unless they were infected with something before they reached your tank. Cheers
  6. Ok guess its Frozen Salt Water then Hmmm wonder where I can get a cheap chest freezer from to house all the water lol
  7. HAHAHAHA Shae unless I can find a super thick wetsuit (like 20mm thick!!) I doubt that I would be snorkling or diving in the southern ocean! Even with my own blubber it isn't enough haha so yes I will be sticking to rock pools and the shallow water (knee deep). To help with the cooling of the water my husband said he is working on that but for added affect I will do what you said you did or the other one is to float frozen bottles of normal water. Since it is caped the normal water won't mix with the salt.
  8. Since I only have the one 20ltr bucket, am I able to full the tank with the marine salt mix and a bucket of natural sea water? All my water changes after then will be done with one bucket of natural sea water cheers
  9. I have to say that I haven't seen sea slugs. I don't know what is available at the places that I am hoping to go to when I do finaly get this setup. I am hoping to find some different coloured triple fins. How many triple fins could I safely have in a 90ltr tank? Would it be wise for me to remove the glass plates at the top of the tank? The tank does have a black plastic hood that holds the light in it. So I want fans blowing on to the water surface? I am hoping to eventualy do this as a diary thing with what I got and how things are going as well as photos (Or links to photos) from my rock setup to even crab photos or something lol. Good excuse to get a good camera
  10. What is wrong with rocks that already have things on it? The two pieces of rock that I have at the moment (thanks to my daughter she didn't want me to put back the triple fin that she caught) has spiny tubeworms on it as well as the good old modest barnacles. There is also a number of chitons. Which I have seen one move from the rock and is currently stuck to the mussel shell lol. There is a book that I got out called Southland's Rocky Shore and it has a number of spots for school field trips. It tells you how to get to these places and what to expect there. Monkey Island and Colic Bay seem to be the best spots for me to go to. As for the sand bed how deep do I need it to be as I have noticed that the crab likes to dig up the sand and burrow under the rock. I was thinking maybe 3-4 inches of sand.
  11. Well for the seaweed I was thinking of just small bits that are stuck to the rock and keeping it pretty high up so it is closer to the light. I am not wanting a large bunch of it or anything like that. We have a lot of red and pink coloured seaweed down here and also some really cool looking bright green so I will see what I can pickup My biggest problem at the moment is removing the guppies that are currently housed in the tank that I am wanting to use lol and all the plants. The filter I have is an Aqua One PF-603 Power Liquid Filter. If this isn't enough of its own how about two of these filters? I would of thought that using sand on an undergravel filter would just clog it up with the sand going through the slots? Or do I put something else over it? But I am going to try with the filters first as I am hoping to hide them behind the rocks.
  12. Well I have decided that I am going to give this a go I was wondering if an internal filter will still be ok? Or would it rust out? My husband is working on a chiller so I will let you know more about that as I know more The tank is a 2ft (60Lx30Dx50H) It has a fluro in the hood. Do I need any special tube for cold water marine or would the light thats in there be ok? Its a 15w 6500K tube. We are going to put a couple of computer extracter fans in the hood to suck out any heat that the fluro might create as there is glass between the light and water. I am looking into getting rocks from the beach that already have things growing on it. Is there anything that I can use to stick these rocks together to form a mountain of rocks while the rocks are still wet? as I don't want to dry the rocks and kill any of the things on it. Thought of drying the areas with a towel and then applying the silicon but would this be enough to allow them to stick? I also want to know about seaweed? Would it be a good or bad thing to add some of this to the tank? Some of the animals I have read like to live in the seaweed (like the triple fins). I am going to be collecting things from Bluff, Colic Bay and Monkey Island. Once the guppies are moved out (sold) I will take photos of my progress and how things have worked for me for others to use. Cheers. **wonders off** now to get rid of these guppies and their several thousand fry!!
  13. ok silly question here but what does live rock look like? Can you get it from the beach or can you only get it from the LFS? If I can get it from a beach (mainly Bluff or Riverton) what do I look for? I am looking into a kinda rock pool sort of thing as it is only a 2ft tank but it is taller than the normal (50cm) so I am hoping that it will handle a little fluxuation in water temps even though we are going to try a fan and computer heatsink and plastic tubing to cool the water. But this is going to be put on a timer to maintain the lower temps required. Cheers
  14. ok I was wondering what temp am I looking to keep the tank at? Just so I know what my goal is. Also what sort of filters are best with cold water marine as my husband pointed out about curosion (excuse spelling) of most metal parts like the ballbearings for the motor. I have heard many people use undergravel. Cheers
  15. Why does it have to be Ti? We were looking into using a normal filter (the one that I have) and using a clear piece of pipe that runs into a box which is cooled by a large heatsink and computer fan then back into the tank. We were going to try this with a heater in the tank set at its lowest temp and seeing if we can find a good steady temp that way but I don't know how well that will work as of yet. For a cold water marine tank I cant' afford $700 for a chiller. That would get me 4 2ft tanks!! haha As I said I was just wanting to know the ins and outs of it and if anyone has tried making one of their own and how well did it work. Cheers
  16. The tank is a 2ft 60Lx30Dx50H (cms) which is about 90ltrs.
  17. Hey there Saltys I would like to know the ins and outs of building a chiller for a cold water marine tank. I am looking at using my 2ft that I have my guppies in but before I let my guppies go I would like to know more info on this. My husband is a plumber so somethings we will be able to do cheaper. Cheers

WOW Picture 2/10 is really good. Really pretty fish Can't wait till I can get my hands on some lol :bounce:
  19. So for a spawning mop I use the cheap wool? The wool that is able to go in the dryer with out shrinking lol. Would a dark green or blue be ok? The tank I have set up has gravel, plants and a small piece of driftwood. Would it be best if I removed all of this? What is the best way for picking the eggs off? I find that plants help keep algae breakouts at bay but thats just my opinion Cheers

Damn so the ones that we currently have here in NZ require spacific water conditions and are not that colourful?
  22. are killies and bristlenoses ok together? I have a number of young bn's and I don't want to put them back into the main tank where the parents are. So will the bn's hurt the eggs or do they stress out killies? I don't want to have killies in a tank where they will be stressed Cheers
  23. YAY!! As of today I deposited my money and returned forms yesterday to join the NZKA Soo looking forward to dealing with all you killie fans out there. I don't have any killies as of yet but working on it lol. I even have a tank setup and waiting for them haha. Just got to take out the filter thats in there and put in a softer flowing sponge filter which I hope to be this weekend Cheers :bounce:
  24. I have an albino male but unfortunatly my hopes are short lived as I think he is infertile. He has absolutly no interest at all in females So yeah total bummer but I shall keep trying .
  25. I am looking into getting some bitaeniatum eggs (hopefully) I was wondering what conditions do they need to hatch? I was going to put them into the albinos half of the 2ft since I have discovered that my albino isn't interested in sex at all . I am able to get foam tubing that is cut so I can slide it over the top of the divider to sit hard up against the glass lid. The temp sits at about 25-27*C (27*C being towards evening) I can lower the heat a little bit but guppies are on the other side and I don't want to lower it to far to affect them. So would this be ok for them? Cheers
