Thanks Amazonian. With the brine shrimp are you meaning the ones that I have to hatch (but can't afford any at this stage) or the pre frozen ones that you can buy? I have been feeding them microworms mainly but lately been giving them finely crushed flake which they enjoy just the same. :bounce:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/p ... G_0016.jpg Well thats them in just over a month old. I know its not a great pic and it is only viewing the front half of the tank as the thick mass of java moss was in the way and I didn't want to pull it out incase any bubbas got caught up in it. They are my first spawn of bettas as my CT fry is still to small to view. Still plenty there hehe so I am buzzing. I have had a very very small loss but that has stoped and come right again so things are good I will keep yous all updated as things progress. Some are starting to get red colour in their fins and its getting brighter and brighter every day. Cheers PeneJane

now this is what I find weird. I have a bucket, baby bath and a bath tub outside with water in it and I don't have any mozzie larvae. Is it because its just to cold down here for them or what? Or could it be that the water is just in the wrong place? The only one that has fish in it is the bath tub. The bucket and baby bath is just water and the baby bath is soaking driftwood. :bounce:

Well someone with 25 yrs experience didn't bother to do the research to find out where they come from to then realise that they are mongrels. Totaly Useless! Sooo Alan now that matt has pulled the auction off trademe should he still breed them? Lyndyloo we get the last laugh. They are also not the only ones in NZ as there are more available and we can get more but...... they are no good for breeding because they are of mixed breed. They are still pretty fish but they are mongrels. Not pure and not suitable for breeding. But if you are still after the A. Bitaeniatum let me know and I will help you set up as well as give you all the support and information you require to hlep care for these fish. Cheers
-
No it is over the way one person delt with the other person over this auction. One person was wanting information for caring for these fish and breeding them. The other person told them that due to lack of experience they would be dead in a week which I feel is utter bullshit because its the same with anyone who gets new fish. You find out via this forum how to care for them and from the people here what their experiences were like with these fish. I have also been told that any of the Aphyosemion species are rather hardy and easy to care for. Thes fish may not be common in NZ but they are not rare. I have been told that the rare fish is the A. Striatum wich I am soon to get (finaly). I feel that the person who was after these killies have been cheated. I know the 3 involved and the person thats been left out didn't want to voice it but I think it needed to be voiced because one person is giving someone totaly misleading information to put them off keeping this fish.
-
This has gone on long enough and personaly I don't care if I get banned from here because enough is enough and it has to be voiced so you can all make your own opinions on this. Ok I would like to know why someone is missleading someone else over some killies! Telling them that if they got them they would die in a week and because one has XX amount of years experience while the other has none doesn't make any difference. ***** I didn't have any experience in my fish but I learnt and think I have done damn well for myself. Or suggesting that they let this person get the killies and they will send this other person some different species. That is not fair. This person is after the ones that they saw so shouldn't be cheated out of that. Now the auction has dissapeared from Trademe when it was due to finish tonight at 7.30. You know who you are and I won't mention names but I think this is very slack of you and very uncalled for. How are you supposed to get more members for the NZKA when you are scaring them off with such rubbish. I have already taken this up with another person of the NZKA and they to are very dissapointed with the whole thing. You are cheating people out of an auction and out of getting fish that they like just because you think you are better than them. As I stated before. I don't care if I get banned from this forum or if this post gets deleted. But I am sure that there will be a small number of people who will read this before that happens. I joined the NZKA because I was told it was a nice friendly club and because I was interested in keeping killies. I have had nothing but a hard time and only a very small handfull of people have offered me some eggs. Yet I know (thanks to someone) that the people I origionaly went to HAD these killies all this time. Someone has been cheated of this auction and has been left hurt and very upset over someones own selfish greed!  BTW Yes I know who you are!

Hey there. I have just breed my CT male betta with a normal veil tail female. When I first put them together they did just as you describe. Female showed all signs of being ready and the male would just chase her away. I then removed the male and put another male in and spawned them in a matter of hrs. She fattened up again so I put her with the CT again and the same happened but I thought I would stick it out and see what happens. That same day they spawned and were fine. I think it could also be that the female comes and inspects the nest and often destroys it and makes the male do it again. (Please correct me if I am wrong people) Personaly if you have conditioned them both and the female is nice and fat I would leave them together. Remove the female if she gets badly beaten up or when you feel that its time to remove her. I have heard that they can be together for up to 3-4 days untill they spawn. Hope you have better luck next time. I have found www.bettatalk.com to be a very good informative site. Cheers

Yeah I know amazonian. I am hoping that out of luck that I can keep them in their own tank for a while and maybe start selling them at about 4 months old. That way people can watch their fins develop some more and know that they still have a fish young enough to spawn with unlike most LFS their bettas are often to old to spawn well. I am hoping to keep the female seperate from any males now so then she won't produce eggs and get fat and die . So tomorrow I am getting another heater and she will be in her own wee tank and hope that she won't get egg bound and die. Cheers

YAY!! My crowntail spawned today! I am totaly over the moon. I now have half moon and ct betta fry on the go. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I don't know if its true in your case or not but if you have a male bristlenose then it could be him. I have had a number of guppies who have haid their tails sliced and I couldn't figure out why untill I sat there watching for an hr and discovered what was happening. My male bristlenose will sit at the upper edge of his cave and when ever a fish swam by he would stick out his spikes and in turn would catch the male guppies tails and put clean slices through them. This would only happen when the male is trying to get the female to breed with him and just after eggs have hatched. I don't know if that is what could be happening in your tank but it could be something to consider. Some melafix in the tank and my guppies tails were back to normal in a few days. Hope you sort out whats happening soon. Cheers PeneJane

That would only cover my bettas which hatched on the 26th of march and was free swimming by the 28th of march. My corys how ever layed on the 3rd of april and hatched on the 9th of april. I have no idea as to when these will be free swimming as they are bottom dwellers lol. So how does this work then. I joined the NZKA in Dec last year. When does the membership run out? and how does it affect registering breedings? Can I only register the one breeding because I have passed the 31st of March and now have to pay again? This is starting to get confusing! lol Cheers
-
There is no club in invercargill. The closes club is in dunners and there is Southern Man there also. But as it seems I can't qualify anyway as even though I paied my NZKA joining fees in Dec. They ran out at the end of March (not that anyone told me) so apparently I am not a financial member no more and that means I can't register my breedings.
-
well my tank has 3 males in it and one male. The tank is divided into two. One side being 1/3 and the other side 2/3 in size. My big red male that I have recently breed with is in the 1/3 side with 3 zebra danios. The other two males are in breeding traps in the 2/3 section where the female betta is along with 2 female mollies. My female betta has run of the tank (2/3 section) and can swim up to the males as she pleases. I currently don't have the space to breed these two at present. I need at least a heater! lol. But I was wanting to know with this setup would the female become egg bound or will she still absorb the eggs. I would love to breed these two as this is my crowntail betta that she is with and is often showing off back to. But they just have to wait lol :bounce:
-
ok what if the female can see a male? Would she still absorb the eggs she produces is she isn't mated? As at present my female has run of the tank while the males are in breeding traps. She has started to fatten up again and I am worred that she may get egg bound and die. What is the best situation for this? Cheers
-
woo hoo all good Now to wait till they are big enough to take a photo of and still with in the age limit! haha
-
Umm how do I know if I am a financal member or not? I am only with the NZKA club?
-
who is the FNZAS breeding co-ordinator? Maybe I can contact them and see what they can do. I would really like to register my breedings (my first time for bettas and corys obviously) as I think that displaying the certificates to future customers (when I open up my mini shop) that it would prove to some extent that I do well with my fish and that they are localy breed by me and not brought in. Just a thought. So yeah if someone could point me in the direction of the person that I can speak to about this that would be great. Cheers :bounce:
-
Ok I don't want this to turn into a fish slap fight. I respect the rules and I will stick by them. If I am unable to register a breeding because I am not able to get someone suitable to vouch for it then thats my tough luck for living so far away lol. I do understand what both of you are saying and agree with you both which makes it a difficult situation because NZKA is NZ wide and what not so it is difficult for these members. I thank you both Paul and Alan for your input but I don't want to have people banned or feelings hurt because of this. I am sure we will work something out. Cheers PeneJane :bounce:
-
So since I can't get a breeding co ordinator to come and vouch for my breeds I can't take part in the breeding scheem? If thats the case then that sucks because I am not expecting someone to go out of their way (drive for hrs) just to come and see some baby fish nor am I going to pay their flights/petrol. Guess I won't be taking part then. Thanks for all the info guys. Cheers :bounce:

Ok well my betta fry are now a week old (from free swimming) So if I was to do 35 days from now to be safe I could get Werner to come check that is if I can get a hold of him lol Apart from him all I have is Southern Man in Dunedin. I can see now why a lot of people probably don't bother with registering as they just don't have the people to vouch for them or the ability to take the photo to prove either lol. I guess I could put them into a jar and put my licence behind it as proof but no one has seen me (apart from MRSkz) to prove that its still me! haha. Oh well I am sure we can figure something out in the next month Cheers
-
ok the only people that I know of that are down this way that are with the NZKA (I think) is southern man (dunners) and werner who I haven't seen on here in ages so I don't even know what he is up to these days to be able to vouch for me. I am unable to take a photo of 40day old betta fry as my camera isn't capable of that closeup. Also I was told that it was 30days from free swimming not 60. If its 60 days then yeah I may be able to get better pics hehe. So I guess I am kinda stuck with verifying my fish at present. Untill I manage to get a much better camera to take the photos. Cheers for the info though. Very interesting. PeneJane :bounce:

Ok I have read the page on this site that says about registering fish breedings and what not and I can say I am no lawyer and I can't understand it. So could someone make it more simple for me. I was told by Alan last night that once my betta and cory fry are 30 days old (from free swimming stage) that I can register the breeding for this year or something like that but I would like to know how to go about it. Do I have to take photos to prove I have the fish and that they had babies as my camer doesn't allow me to get pictures that close. Are there any forms I have to fill out? Who do I contact. Cheers PeneJane

ok luke heres what I done. I had a 22ltr tank which had a half doz female guppies with one snakeskin and one albino. After many months of getting DAMN NOTHING!! I decided I would put all my guppies in one tank and use that tank for the corys. I removed everything apart from filter, heater and gravel. Gave the gravel a real good vac (water was black in the bucket  ) Added a rock or two, the drift wood and put the plants back. I have the temp sitting at 22*C. They were origionaly in the 2ft tank with the bettas sitting at 27*C but moved them to this cooler tank. I didn't add any rain water. Just water from the tap in the bathroom and some plant grow stuff and thats it. This was done on Sunday afternoon and found eggs yesterday. So it can't be that bad One thing that has me worried is the 50+ eggs over a 2 week period!! help me! lol Cheers
-
I am unsure as to what I am supposed to do with these but for now I am leaving them in the tank. They are on all 4 sides of the tank and on some plants. My corys are in a tank on their own (minus one young guppy that hid well when I was emptying out) and the temp is at 22*C. I didnt' think that they were going to do their thing but when I went to check on my betta fry (which are doing well) I checked the cory tank which is right next to it and woo hoo! Eggs! I want to know how long does it take for these to hatch? I have been keeping a close eye on them and so far none seem to be getting eaten. I am keeping an eye on their food and giving them more when it runs out hoping that will stop them from eating the eggs. Cheers :bounce:
