so do I put it into the hot water cupboard or on the window ledge? I also have a tube of liquid fry but I can't see me being able to do a drip line from a tube of liquid fry lol.
-
ok that I think I can do. Next question lol, Where can I get green water? or is that the infusoria? To help them grow is it best if I put it on a window ledge? I dont' know about keeping it warm as the weather down here has been pretty cold lately. But I will give it a shot. Cheers for all the info

Yeah I have read about that and was going to put a layer or two of gladwrap over the top of the container. I don't know about drip feeding as I will be unable to feed them at night but I am going to look into setting up a jar of tank water with some lettuce in it to try and start some infusoria (if all goes well) but I am having a hard time finding out when it is ready to use. Some say when the water turns foggy. Others say when the water turns clear after being foggy and I am soo confused over it. I don't have any brine shrimp eggs to hatch and can't afford it at present. BTW would a male betta be ok with a number of baby bristlenoses? Cheers

What do you mean by a pilot light? I have read that when the male is looking after the next that the light has to be on 24/7 untill the fry are free swimming but I haven't heard anything about a pilot light for the fry. I have yet to make infusoria but I do have good microworm cultures going.

Thanks for that Info. I have been reorganising my tanks in my head as to whats going to go where to allow the male and female to be different tanks and to keep the fry in one tank. So I now have to clean out the small tank (bare bottom) and get that all ready Cheers
-
Well the tank that they will be going into is 2/3 of my 2ft tank. The other side has some guppies that are growing out and will soon be for sale. The reason I ask about moving the guppy fry is that once and if they breed I can put the female on the other side with the guppies and leave the male to look after the nest. Once the fry are free swimming I wanted to move them or a handfull of them into one of thoes small tanks where there will be nothing but a little bit of floating plant, filter and heater (no gravel) so I can feed them microworms and they can find them or try some egg. I will add snails of course lol. But yeah I just wanted to know that once the male has done his thing am I able to move the babies once freeswimming. Cheers

Cheers for that Kookie Now just to find out about the fry

Hey there I was wondering are female bettas ok with guppies? I know that males shouldn't be but was wondering if this applies to females also. Once I have managed to breed my bettas (once I get some lol) instead of removing the male. Could I remove the fry (or as many as I can catch) and put them into their own tan? Just trying to work out what is the best way to do this so I know how many tanks are required to be setup. Cheers

I can't find any post from Bettaman to be able to send him a PM. Is there any chance of him having a male and female I could breed and how much for postage to invercargill? Also what sort of bettas does he have? (tail shape) Cheers

If I remember right I think I joined early Dec. Let me check the list of others that I have. The letter from Erling had a list of people who joined, emails and contact number. I joined on the 13th of Dec according to that. Is there an extra fee I have to pay? If so I was unaware of this. Please let me know. Cheers

Well I am with the NZKA is that affiliated?? If not what do I go through to either join the FNZAS or become affiliated. Cheers :bounce:

How does someone get one of these mags? They sound as if they have a lot of good info in them which would be handy to have on site or to prove a point to another person lol. Cheers

Unfortunatly yes dropsy affects many fish but its like cancer. Some will get it while some won't. From what I have been told it will not affect any other fish (so no need to panic) unless the fish dies in the tank and the others eat it. But if you remove the fish before it dies then your chances are pretty high that none of the others will get it. I have also been told that thoes that have weak genetics like the albinos and some other selected strains are also more likely to suffer from high counts of dropsy. Sorry that there is no cure and sorry about your loss. It does suck

its like clamped fins only that they never unclamp them ever. It gets to the point where the tail and side fins look like "<" and eventually it dissapears. Normaly after this happens the fish then looks as if it is strugling to keep up with the rest and its just cruel to let them carry on like that. I have had clamped fins with the adults but it never got to pin tail.
-
Well personaly I have never had it affect my adults, only my fry thats why I went through great efforts to seperate the fry from the adults or catch the female due to drop in a breeding trap and then transfer the fry to the other tank which was treated seperately. You could add it to your current tanks but remove/cull all thoes that are currently affected and leave only the healthy ones to be treated. I had to do treatment for about a week before things settled down. Hopefully with your next couple of drops of fry it will help prevent the pin/needle tail in your fry Cheers

I have had this problem and still have this problem. Some of it is down to genetics (natures way). But what I have found to work is treating them with Malachite Green. The instructions on there say raise the temp to 28*C and add one drop per ltr of tank water. I did this and went 6 months with out another out break but one of my female guppies that didn't look to well just before she had her fry, all the fry are showing pin tail which eventually moves up the body. They swim around and do their normal thing of hunting and eating untill eventually it gets the better of them and die. You could try (if you have room and tank space) put your fry into another tank and raise the temp to 28*C. I had this in my fry tank and never had the problem show up. Thats from my experience. Hope it helps a little. Cheers

http://www.killi.co.uk/SpeciesDetails.php?ID=12 I have pointed out this site somewhere else in this section before but this one is for this fish. If you click on the "Read the full reports here" right under the temp you will see what temp others have had theirs at and what Male to Female ratio they have ended up with and how they spawned them and cared for the eggs. Has many different views and I am sure you will be able to pick one to follow Thats about all I can help with Cheers PeneJane

unfortunatly I still have a small chance of hope that I may be able to get an albino female or two at some stage. I love the colour of him when the lights are out. Its like he glows. If I was to change my mind Keri I shall let you know Cheers
-
They have settled down now and are doing their normal thing but unfortunatly there are no longer any eggs which totaly sucks. But heres hoping that they will do their thing for me some time real soon

Ok late last night I noticed that the bristlenoses were going to the surface for air then back to the bottom again. Could this be a sign that there isn't enough oxygen in the water because my water test came up normal so I have added a pump and an air stone and everyone seems happy again. I am not sure if my male has gone back to his eggs or not but I shall watch today and let yous know. Cheers

Ummm out of the two times my bn's have breed I have noticed over the last couple of days that the male is comming out. Last time he never came out at all (that I knew of during the day). Does this mean that the eggs have gone sour or something? As mentioned before I can't see the eggs and the only way I can find out is to pick up the whole rock cave and turn it over. The temp has been getting pretty high inside during the day so could this be a prob? Tank is up to 28*C. The eggs would of been layed about monday last week so its just been over a week so far. I have just had a look and he is at the other end of the tank on the log. What should I do? Do I leave him and hope he will go back to the nest in time or has something gone wrong and I should investagate the cave? Cheers
-
thats the same with my albino male guppy. He just doesn't seem interested at all which is a total bummer for me as I have him with my best golden/blonde females and so far nothing The females are not getting any fatter either so I have added my metallic green snakeskin guppy to have a go at them. If I come across any albino then its a bonus but I have given up on him for now. :bounce:

pictures would be worthless as I am unable to get to where he is. The cave that he is in is a ceramic (or what ever they use) cave rock. He is hidden under the front point. I can show you a picture of the rock cave he is in though but you will see why I say it is pointless of me taking pictures of him as I won't see him lol. Cheers http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/p ... ure009.jpg

My husband did the same for me but he used a square form of down pipe instead of guttering. He has placed the light in the centre and then just sprayed it black. As soon as I get my computer up and running again I can upload a picture of it. Cheers

I am unable to move the whole family together. The only other fish in their tank is half black guppies. I have noticed through the only entrance of the cave that some of the eggs are not with the rest of the bunch. Would the male bn eventually move the escaped eggs with the rest of the bunch? As I have noticed that over a days period that the eggs are being moved about (the loose ones that is) I am unable to see how many eggs there are because of where he has them in the cave but I am excited as normal. So two weeks and I should see them wriggling about Cheers
