  1. When you say you clean the filter, are you cleaning it under tap water or water that you have removed from the tank? Because cleaning the filter under tap water removes all the good bacteria in there and it has to start again. Thats why people stress that you are to clean out your filter in water removed from the tank. :bounce:
  2. I had the same thing but reversed. My female didn't like the male and nothing had happened after 2 days so I removed the male (crowntail) and added the other male (halfmoon) well with in 2-3 hrs they were spawning. They spawned on the 24th of March (oops hehe edited) and eggs had hatched during the night and were all there on the 26. So mine took just over a day to hatch. The fry were free swimming as of last night (27th) and daddy is still in there getting them, cleaning them and putting them back to the nest. I am going to be taking him out later today just in case he starts to eat the bubbas. But really exciting stuff alright BTW Taniwha the bubble nest doesn't have to be huge like the ones on the net as they normaly show nest that are out of the ordinary and are super huge. My males often start a small nest (enough bubbles to cover a 20-50cent piece) but when I let the female go he finishes it off just before spawning. Good luck
  3. Yeah I would love to get some more bbs to hatch but I don't want to pay the $23 at the LFS for a small test tube and I can't quite afford to get it via the NZKA either at hte moment lol. Maybe (depending on how may survive) I can get some with selling some bettas off in the future
  4. Easier said than done Shae lol I don't have any eggs to hatch and don't have the money to get any more (all being put into jars and making tanks to house them when they get to big for the 15ltr tank) Thats why I wanted things that I could do from home Cheers
  5. sorry I should of mentioned it before but its not goldfish. It white cloud mountian minnows in the pond (well its actually a bath tub hehe) I don't have goldfish. Would that still affect them? Cheers
  6. what about water from the pond? Its been there for months, doesn't have a filter so the water is still. There is even some mozzie lavae in there hehe. I also have one of the baby baths outside with drift wood in it (trying to get it to sink) That has been outside in the sun for the past 2 weeks. Would the water from there be ok to use? Still as I said when I put some in a container its clear yet it looks green in the tub lol Cheers
  7. ok my main consern is how green is the water supposed to be? When is it safe to use? As I said I have two 1ltr containers and the water has a slight green tinge to it but I don't know if that is safe to use yet or not. Bubbas are still pointing up as of this morning and dad is still doing a good job of grabbing the stragglers and putting them back.
  8. yeah I have got two 1ltr containers of green water going but I have no idea when its safe to use. I don't have any lettuce so I added a piece of courgette (heard it has worked for others fine). The water when looking down from top has a green tinge to it but thats all. How do I know when its safe to use? Cheers
  9. ok my bettas hatched at some stage during the night last night and I was wondering when is a good time to remove the male. At present he is still picking up any fry that drop to the bottom and putting them back up into the bubbles. Should I remove him tonight or leave him and remove him tomorrow morning? My green water hasn't worked so I have boiled an egg for the yolk and I have that with a small amount of water to form a runny paste. I was then going to put it through a hanky to get the real fine fine bits of egg yolk. I was thinking to start off with 0.3mls of this stuff and then put it through a hanky into the tank. Is this fine untill they are big enough to take the microworms? Cheers Should I give them a little something tonight?
  10. Well I am going to check on them again later this afternoon. If their yolk sacks have shrunk a lot then I will consider feeding them but for now dad is doing a wonderful job and I have a good amount of whiteworms waiting for him to have when I remove him :bounce:
  11. Well this morning I HAVE FRY!!! and I have to say that they are not as small as I thought they would be. I think the wcmm fry is smaller. There still is no bubble nest but dad is picking up thoes that fall and spitting them backup to where they should be. Most of them are stuck to the side of the cup and just hanging out lol. Now my green water has started to go foggy? Is that a good thing? As I thought it goes foggy first then clears up and is safe to use? I still have liquid fry for egg layers on hand to. Cheers
  12. ok what the hell is happening? Earlier today my male had a nice bubble nest and was doing well at picking up any stray eggs that fell. But when I went to bed there were eggs all over the bottom of the tank and no matter how hard he tries the eggs just are not staying up the top. The bubble nest is all but a couple of bubbles now. Has something happened to the eggs (signs of being rotton or unfertalised?) or has the male just turned lazy at some stage and has sliped up? or is there something I did wrong? When I shine a torch on the eggs I can see the tiny little fry (believe me only just) and I thought that they may of hatched tonight (layed friday morning). I soo hope that it isn't something I done wrong. He is still working (at 1.30am) real hard on picking up the eggs and putting them back in the nest but they just keep floating back down. :
  13. ok I don't have green water but how do I make some? Would banana skin in tank water in a jug in the hot water cupboard be ok? I also have liquidfry for egg layers, as well as microworms. How would I know when the water is safe to use?
  14. HOLY COW!!!!! Well the female is now putting the eggs up in the nest! Yet the male doesn't! hahaha lazy bum! So I now have eggs in the bubble nest.I take it lights stay on now? or is that when the fry are free swimming? Cheers WOO HOO :bounce:
  15. well going against your words of swapping the males. I did and now they are spawning. I swaped them over at like 8am this morning and came in to them wrapping each other at 10.30am. I have seen eggs fall but the male doesn't go after them and in the end the female finds them and eats them ( I have not yet seen her spit them into the bubble nest) Will he get some of the eggs eventually? Cheers **excitment is in the air** Oh and I guess this female is just picky as she was never this calm with the CT betta but is totaly fine with the HM.
  16. I am taking the advice you are offering but so far that hasn't worked for me. Today will be the second day that the female as been in the tank with the male. She is still plump and I am worried that if something doesn't happen soon that I may lose her to being backed up with eggs. The female is absolutly terrified of the CT male so I was thinking if nothing has improved by lunch time today that I would remove the CT male and put in the HM male who she has been with before. Cheers
  17. Well thats what is confusing me. I have been checking on them in regular times and the female is still fat so I guess they can't of done their thing. The only thing I Have to go on if they do it during the night is in the morning the female should be thin again right? At the moment the female is terrified of him (CT betta) yet with the HM she would happily come over to the nest and do her thing (head down swimming). The CT male is building a ver good nest (better than the HMs attempt) but the female won't go anywhere near him. He will hunt her down and chase her about. I have read on a number of sites that unless the female is badly hurt that you can leave them together for ages or untill one or the other gets hurt. At the moment she has a couple of rips in her fin and tail but no body wounds as of yet (thank goodness!). So untill bad damage is done am I ok in leaving them together to see if they will still do their thing? Cheers :bounce:
  18. ok if my bettas were to breed during the night how would I know that they have done their thing and to remove the female? because the nest is at the other end of the cup and against the white background I guess it would be hard to see little white eggs the size of salt grains. Does the males attitude change? I just want to be sure as I don't want to remove the female to early or leave it to late and find her dead. Cheers
  19. from the nipps I have had taken out of my guppies tails I can say that yes the colour does come back but if it had any spots or pattern in his tail it may not be the same as it was before and I have found that the tail normaly comes back with a rough edge. Not a smooth edge (unless he had a rough edge before). But yes it comes through clear then the colour comes through after. Cheers Glad to hear that hes doing fine again.
  20. Ok I read on another site that when you are trying to spawn bettas you are to leave the light on the whole time and also up untill the fry are about a month old. I released the female yesterday morning into the tank with him and almost instantly she showed her vertical bars and when ever he approached her she would go head down as they should. But then suddenly he would lunge at her with his mouth open. Is this a sign that he wasn't ready or just part of the courtship? She would even come over to him under the nest and wiggle right next to him under the nest. They would start circling but then he would just jump at her. This morning the nest was all but gone. The female isn't that badly beaten up just one little rip/tear in her bottom fin. Due to the nest being gone I have now seperated them. What had gone wrong here? Cheers
  21. Well I have put my bettas (female in a jar) into a tank that has 5 inches of water (bare bottom tank) with a slow bubbling filter and heater at 79*F (doesn't have 80 lol) It has already been about 3 hrs and he has got about 1inch of bubbles in one corner of the caved out poly that I put in there (I didn't have any poly cups). At what point would the next be big enough and when would it be the right time to take the female out of the jar and into the tank? Once I have removed the jar should I put in a clump of plants or leave it empty? Cheers.
  22. Well I am hoping to fatten them up over the next week and then I am going to try and introduce them (her in a breeding trap) and see what happens. Gives me time to get poly cups to hehe
  23. I know it sounds funny but yes brothers, sisters, cusons, aunts, grand daughters/sons can all be breed together in most fish species. May people get put off by breeding because they think that they are unable to then breed brothers and sisters with mother or father when thats what you do if you are working on better fin type, colours, body shapes. So yes I think you would be fine in breeding them. If I am wrong then please someone correct me.. Cheers

Hmmm if its a new camera does that mean that theres an old one? lol :bounce:
  25. To be honest I didn't notice. It shows up in the pic more than it does on the fish in the tank but yeah I guess so
