Hi If people were that successful and easy then why are they not breeding now..?? To prices..Its up to the buyer to set standards not the seller..Think about that,,If not selling at good price,,why..To high..Maybe but also whats the point of buying imported if they wont breed..Pretty yes..Breed no in a lot of cases so like my cockatoo's..If you want the breed then a fair price is required for time spend or no point in it.. To question about undergravel filter..No as proper filter and on top is a fabric to stop sand entering.. The guttering mesh will do the same job along with moss giving hiding places for fry..My way works and no time chasing fish and stressing them out so thats why most likely the dont do anything...By the way this not an arguement about prices just how to breed them.Phill

Hi My setup is actually based on leave alone..The tank is big at 800x500wx450H Just 8 fish are in it..Equal sexes. The bottom is u/g filter and fine punis sand as for all my tanks.. Water is 100% rain at 28 c and inside is wood and plastic gutter cover and java moss making up 50% of the total tank..All at one end.. The tank is covered about 75 % With dark cardboard and i just see new fry when big and bold enough to come out.. I lift a flap and feed bbs live twice a day + light crushed flakes.. Im yet to see more than a few fry at a time so starting to think they might be mass spawners in the wild and each just a few eggs..The population now in about 2 months is about 40..So if selling at $13 each later as i have been getting is not to bad over the year.. Many of the imported are likely to have been hit by hormones so may never breed..I have emerald eye rasbora that never have looked like breeding and were imported.. Try it...........Cheers Phill The food and moss means fry dont get eaten ans the 8 breeders could never catch them...

Best in a long time ..The only thing that will kill over night if not sooner is rapid water change..PH going lower is Death..Very quickly..Temp going down the same..Higher major change the same..Letalone nitrates etc.. Drowned ..Well... All fish have to be conditioned over at least an hour or expect the worst.. Cheers Phill

Live Food stimulates fish..Better growth as more natural...I believe proten will be better...Phill

Basic breeding question - always wanted to ask!

Wild Fish is where most fish come from so in fact they carry all the xyz and so on..So when they breed its usual to get true lines..But if that line keeps going its just a matter of time before you might,Repeat might see defects.. In Wild Cockatoo's i have 5 Pairs going from the original wild imports that all with have simular xyz but not the same..So young from each line can breed very successfully by x them back to another batch line and not keep them breeding to them selves... Even Singapore breeders are importing wild fish to keep lines true... Cheers Phill -

Hi Tank light off untill new fish have settled is a normal thing to do..Off all day and night untill you see not so nervous..Then start putting them on and increase slowly each day...Maybe over a week...To normal levels...Phill
-
Leave lights over tank of till feeding..Its quite normal not to feed for a couple of days.. Just try blood worms a little at a time..temp at least 28c.. I have had my imported discus not eat for a week...All came right as stress goes away..Stay out of tank till all normal just adds to problems.. Cheers Phill Collis

I breed them in 180 L tank thats 75% full of java moss all over drift wood { actually 500 year old Puri that died years ago in my place} it slowly rots giving the idea water..Just 100 % rain at 29 C I keep just around 10 as mixed M & F...The area has to be quite dark in the moss or eggs will die from the light.. Feed heaps of live BB shrimps into moss..Fry will hide there and come out when about 10mm..Never see before that..I have sold 200 this year..Breed here.. I have a black rubbish bag of the end..There ..A free tip..get breeding.. Se my notes about quarantine rooms..

How many import quarantine facilitys are there in nz?

Hi Beware...Repeat ..Beware.. The rules are now not to importers favor..I believe MAF will stop imported fish by making the rules unworkable..Just like banning imports..Still works to the letter of the law.. I was looking at possibly thousands just to renew my manual..Ever time put forward..rejected..And bill just kept going up.. I cancelled my import licence and believe it would be long before imports will be no more.. So best idea..Do what im doing is to breed here..If i can so can many others..Point.. Cant do it in your bedroom.. I do have info on how to set up worthwhile rooms..Dont miss the boat and leave till imports stop..Then no fish to buy and set up as breeding lines.. Cheers Phill Collis -
That not my job to buy in stocks..I dont always sell as breeding stocks.. Another today was sold on trade me as a pretty fish..Not all want to breed.. Phill
-
Hi Thanks for note..If it wasnt for trade me ..I think i would not have bothered becomming a Discus Specialist Breeder ..At least this way anyone can buy..And yes people do waste time but i find more just want a pretty fish..I get a real kick out of seeing fish like whiptails that only breed in the wild actually breed like an express train... Cheers Phill

Hi Try to buy from the other importers and miss out shops..?? I market all of nz and not shops..So ever one can get access.. Not every one wants to breed and actual fact members here seldom buy..Unless via trade me..Then i dont know if members or not....Phill

Hi You hit the nail right on the head..Business Breeding is not like a hobby.. If other importer saw what i was treating with then they will flood the market with cheap imports.. Even now most imports are MALES only..They kull out Females..To protect there business.. I have protected the ones i do to my best and will not let 2 years of work go down the drain...Even saying this the auctions on trade me have been changed to reflect what im now selling as most have been sold.. Cheers to All Phill
-
I said once i treat they dont usually need it again and buyers can be told what to do..But so far no one has had a repeated treatment Remember they are here for months. One pair of E hase just been sold..So all now sold now till more grow on....Phill
-
They are listed here as Peru states.. Actually i breed both seperately..But as i said i have just some big males for sale..Months before any more and if sold will not be my worry..Phill
-
Read the quote..they breed this way in the wild..
-
Treatment are years of trial and error..Sorry i treat whats here and when sold dont need it any more.. If i gave away all secrets then i might as well just retire.. Who ever buys my business will get all knowledge including how to not loose baby Discus....Phill

The fish from wellington only lasted a short while and supplier also said he to had lost them..I have had read on a maf web somewhere where a virus to affect all dwf cichlids had been id.. I now have not tried them since but did today see another threat about loosing them.. I have just stayed with the wild ones and have just a few losses in original imports and none in what breed here,, .........Phill
-
Hi Not suprised to see losses as just about all common dwf cichlids and rams are carring a virus known to world webs i see..Also a type of dropsy.. I to have had most here and did not last long..ie triple red ,orange flash.. Now i have a tretment i use with good success,Thats why i sell wild breed cichlids on trade me..They dont just drop dead...Phill
-
[quote imported the cichlids and worked out the types with Peru experts,They cannot tell the differences..Its quite simple..They breed with each other in the wild..So are natural....The only diff is a red spot by a fin and all came in one shipment as fry..Breed in there tanks from wild caught parents..They are all one strain but was given the two names to use when big enough to see the slight diff..Anyway... Phill Collis

The Discus types are named now in to the hundreds but bacisally still the same fish. Cichlids that x breed are sub-spec or same as orange flash or triple red apisto's so in fact because subs keep dieing would be best to back breed with my wilds. If in nature they breed together then they are basically the same but can be sub's..Take angels...! To dirty tanks..Yes i have real dirt Called ALGAE..As algae helps to clean water and if your in there every few days cleaning,,Well no production.. I have about 250 bristle nose including true albinos as workers and a feed a day keeps them happy and dont moan about work contitions... At this monent i have over 400 tanks if dividers are counted or 124 tanks with out..Most av 250 L In business my sales are only partly seen via trade me and yes im selling out and not because of sales but bad neck.. Sorry to be a pain in the neck but most dont even know me or meet me but my business is not a play hobby but serious breeder.I now would have 500 young discus and new breeders becomming of age every day..Also 3 types of whiptails breeding. Several others here still to start.. Also look at angels..I breed wild types. I also find that most think that they can buy rear ADULT fish cheep and breed..Well if i have rear lines i dont cut my own throat but selling cheep after spending usually a year to get say euntous to breeding age... Come meet me and see a real fish room....Phill Collis

This thread is all just rubbish..I imported the cichlids and worked out the types with Peru experts,They cannot tell the differences..Its quite simple..They breed with each other in the wild..So are natural....The only diff is a red spot by a fin and all came in one shipment as fry..Breed in there tanks from wild caught parents..They are all one strain but was given the two names to use when big enough to see the slight diff..Anyway... No ones is telling you to buy.. I have plenty of real buyers that are interested in the Rare Fish i have imported...No one else has the many types of amazon fish i breed.. Phill Collis
