new zealand discus man replied to mumzy50's topic in Cichlids
Hi I imported both 2 years ago and im breeding both..Mine are strickly from wild parents and extremely tough..Rearly loose any at any size... Young unsexed are on trade me at present..Cockatoo's Also still a few pairs..My most successful is several types in same tank and when see fry i move all out and leave fry behind.. You can tell whos who by parents guarding them..Found regardless of tank size the male will hunt them down if he's in the mood again...Phill -

Hi Check PH as it looks like been burnt..If PH you have is drops and shows yellow the test may very well be out of it normal range and be way lower.. To prove lower or not..Test tank and if yellow you will think 6.8 but now test common tap and should be blue..7 .2 or higher.. Take same amount of tank to tap water,,Mix and test..if its 6.8 to there abouts it should go green to ...So if still yellow then PH could be as i think a way lot lower and acid burnt fish...Baking soda can if crease Ph but do it slowly..But i dont think you can stop that fungus,,Once in usually to late.. Good luck...Many have be caught be fixes range PH testers and dick smith have a digital tester on special for around 75 dollars and thats what we use if moving fish around..Also large PH drop is fatal....Phill

Hi What used to be here as pea gravel..Yes from waikato river and the pumus content is very porius..After last post i got a big chunk of pumus about 300x 200mm and used common hand saw and split in two..Cuts just like very soft wood..Even softer than balsa .. Them just used speed drill to basically hollow both sides and put back together with 3 screws..Big entrance to allow fish into inside cave.. In pleco tank 10 minutes later and is just floating so be interesting to see when sinks..Interesting..The insides look like trapped wood that very dark..Most likely simular to peat...Phill
-
Hi Dont know that stuff but guess is could be just loose molded ,,Could make anything using silicone tanks glue..Or simular ..Yes i have heaps from west coast beach not to far away..Phill

Hi I just got into day a pair of ordinary kribs..Got chunk about 150mm x 120 thick and in two minutes made them a cave an while i was washing out there tank.{180L thats how i get many to breed as need zip done for months..} They moved straight in to it..Drills easy with wood speed bits at a slow rpm and just move bit around in side and hollow out..Off to make a huge one for some yellow spotted pleco's im tring to breed....Phill
-
Hi Thanks for that tip..Re b/n caves..I have never though of that myself and have pumus up tp 200mm lumps..Got to get working..Phill

Hi It's is dredging from the Waikato river..Just a bit heaver grade than builders sand and yes when washing if before it dried some pumus will float and then sink.. Particals here are 1mm to 3.5mm if the same as came from the old tuakau sand co...But think the same stuff... I have it in all 124 tanks with u/g filters and a ploy material over filter to stop leaking through..5mm thick.. Advantage...Fine ..great for filter growth..Fine ,,so food cannot enter the biggest killer of fish..Fine..Stops fry being lost in waikamo caves.. Warning...With this and many sands/gravels used the PH may very well drop to ever below 4 PH..A bit of sea shell can buffer and hold over time.. And a PH Meter is on special from dick smiths for about 77 dollars or there abouts... Cheers Phill

Hi Avoid stock that you see has just arrived as trouble takes a few days to show,,Stress is a strange thing..Healthy fish are often made sick just because moved and resorces go down so if plenty of what your watching give 2 or 3 days to rest then pick......Cheers Phill

Hi If worried about shop water then you should not be be putting there fish in ether...So if the water is a problem so automatically is the fish...If you know the seller and its up to your faith in them..Always check the gut area for sunkin or dark colour there will mean bactrica or bugs..Worms.. The only time i have sperated is when imported say from Peru the water and fish go in to 40 L bins and conditioning is done over 2 hours with the same quality fresh water thats was already put into tanks,... Then just netted out as the imported water gets clorinated... Cheers Phill

Hi I tell all my clients to open bag and float..The over the next 30 to 40 minutes to add tank water about 50mls at a time..But the time the bag is full then just let swim out in there own time..The bucket way is doing the same thing but more auto..Most buyers have several bags to deal with so then bucket way is not to practical... If a serious fish keeper you should have a digital PH Meter...If so they can be added much quicker as is PH shock is what kills fish over night.. I have found that going up minor amounts in PH never has caused and worrys but a PH drop of one PH can be fatal to many fish..Temp up or down one degree C is normally of but no more then back to the start of note and go through full conditioning.. Another TRAP.....Liguid PH testers usually have a fixed range like.. 6.8 to 7.4 is very common... 6.8 usually shows yellow BUT in fact to PH could be way lower and the fish can handle to a degree for a time..Then start to become sick and die off..So if even after conditioning they are then added to extremely acid water they to are likely to die over night.. Trick with ph testers testing what you think is 6.8..Go to common tap water and should test blue and then take the same amount of tank to tap add together,.,Do test..If still yellow proves very dangerous water..If was 6.8 it should have gone to 7 and show greenish.. Be carefull doing ,,major adjustments Take plenty of time Major adjustment are required before releasing your new fish.. I not to long back purchased fish my self and found the water in fact was just 3.9 Ph..It was three days before i took out of bin and added to new tank...I did not want to increase to rain at 6.5 any quicker as shock may have killed the all... Good Fishing and hope notes help..PS..When buyer follow instructions never has there been any losses..Cheers Phill

Hi With out pure oxygen in bag the fish are likely to just run out of breathing stuff.. Cant see how fish can drown but some fish can die because of to much oxygen..ie fighters...... Couriers often mix up so thats why in imported the 40 Hour heat pads..Many are now using them and i send a photo of how to set up in box..They to are another reason that fish die..If no oxygen in box heat pads stop working.. Cheers Phill
