  1. You clean sponges when it is starting on Impacting the flow. as long as the chemistary of the tank water and rain tank water (ph and salinity mainly) are simmilar I have found that there is no problem washing filters in that water.
  2. I have added some drift wood to the scape, and the plants for live filtration. (I am thinking of adding some pothos, just getting some roots started on it in another tank first. I have also added two loaches to the tank (I caved and bought some from Animates) I will add more when I go to hff so I can get different species). I will add some new photo's latter but getting some of the fish are hard, as they move so fast.
  3. Nice jag, How big is it? (I have always wanted a jag, I am currently sort of looking for little ones)
  4. That seems rather fast? "Just stirred up the sand in my tank. I have ALOT of mts.
  5. Welcome If you think you have ammonia is your tank properly cycled? What are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels?
  6. It is stickied in the fresh water subforum. You also have to remember just because it is on the list doesn't mean it is in nz.
  7. If ever wondering if somthing is allowed in nz it is always good to look through THE LIST. If you are refering to 'Leporacanthicus joselimai' then my serch through the list says it is not allowed in .

There not that bad a quality of pic's, better then I can do. Nice fish. The first pic of the pleco is intense.
  11. I find that you can generally take the manufactures advice with a pinch of salt, as they are just out there to sell you more stuff.
  12. Awesome, and hopefully I wont have work, so I can attend.
  13. There is alot of fish that I put in the same category, for example most of the larger growing cichlids (I mean how can you resist that cute oscar in the pet shop), most goldfish and lets not forget turtles. They are on the whole fairly cheap, which as some one who will house them correctly is what I want when buying them, but is bad for the fish as it puts them in the price range where people can afford to replace them regularly. The main problem though is that fish aren't seen as being on the same 'level' as pets. On the whole they are seen as something that can be put into a tank as an ornament then not cared for. What people dont realize and/or don't care is that fish require more effort to look after then some other pets, like cats. This leads to them being abused, but again no one seems to care that they are living in substandard conditions and dying prematurely. And lets not forget 'fish only grow to the size of their tank'....
  14. Cool, what sort of cat is it? I would put a table/bench next to the tank at the right height, that is all I have, and my cat used to enjoy sitting on that and watching my fish. (doesn't any more because I left the lid off the top, and he jumped up to sit on the warm light, then landed in the water. He has never been near the tank since.)
  15. Sponges in my filters I have never changed, just rinse in tank water about once a month. Filter wool I do change, about twice a year, and rinse at the same time as the sponges otherwise. Hope that answers your question.
