  1. Jennifer, I sent you an email this morning then remembered that I didn't use my forum ID in it... So anyway here are a couple of photos: nzbeeman, on Flickr
  2. I had some 'nice' BBA last week but it has died off somewhat this week, but I do have a small patch of short hair-like algae about 5mm long (Oedogonium?) that I'm growing slowly in my 50 odd L tank and some Spirogyra? in my bug tank. EDIT: Oh and you are welcome to use any of the photos I have posted in the native section for the fish pages
  3. Not even that, they still have real days, but for about 3 weeks (cant be bothered to look it up) each year the sun doesn't set/rise.
  4. I would think that any of the broadwoods would be fine as they are not sap heavy, I would be cautious about any of the podocarps/conifers as they tend to be full of sap. Well dead dried/washed podocarp wood should be fine, and I'm sure that some of the wood that I have would be native podocarp.
  5. Hi and welcome about the orange squares: Don't use internet explorer, try firefox, chrome or opera. if that is not an option you could try with javascript off, but that brings other problems... http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=52344&sid=9815605c49c69a3f3511fc7361e6071a
  6. Kauri does contain a lot of sap so use with caution.
  7. I think you need to upgrade the filtration unit (or media) as the water is looking a bit turbid
  8. I think it got lost in the upgrades Try the link in my sig below
  9. As mentioned on page 1 I use black iron sand, collected from south of Raglan. This stuff is very heavy, a 3/4 full 10l bucket will weigh in at some 20kg. I haven't had any issues with it other than the second lot I got had lots of very fine 'dust' that clouded the thank for about a week. I don't test pH so cant say one way or another how it effects this, and I dont grow plants so cant say how good it is for this - but I can't see that there would be any problems. About it getting into the filter, I have had some get into my cf1200 but it just sits in the bottom - doesn't seem to work it's way up to the impeller. See http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=50025 page 2 & 3 for photos ps Depending where it is collected from the colour will range from very dark blue/black to very dark grey to grey. One interesting thing that happens is the iron sand and silica/rock/etc will separate out slightly to give bands and patterning where there is different amounts of current or if you poor it through the water column.
  10. What do you mean by that?
  11. It was, wouldn't turn on tonight, grabed another Tornado branded one form the storeroom (car shed) and it is a 'warm white' so I found a budget brand 6400k deg 18w one.
  12. I think the Philips 20w 'Tornado' have a good light for fishroom.
  13. One thing that happened (or not) to me after 9/11 was I was no-longer in the profile group to be patted down/shoes off/can you open your bag please/... I almost thought it was the norm for everybody, then it just stopped. No longer was the young, long haired, anarchist the one to be afraid of. I to am saddened at the way the "US" has acted, Osama never in the days after 9/11 put his hand up and said "I did this...". On countless other times in the Middle East/Africa he did. Does thes point to the 'fact' that hes wasn't behind the attacks?
  14. I find it interesting how the US rhetoric has pervaded even NZ, he was neither a spiritual or political leader of the Taliban
  15. are there any fish in there at the moment? the bacteria in the filter need something to live on, fish waste or decomposing fishfood, or they wont breed thus the tank cant cycle.
  16. have you seen the documentary that he has don on living with the disease? Aired in the UK maybe 1 1/2 - 2 years ago. Fantastic author, it will be a sad day when he can no longer write.
  17. my cf1200 gets some air in it - I had assumed it was just the water de-gassing under the negative pressure, I just tilt mine to one side while running (so the taps are the high point) so the impeller is working again then slowly lower back to flat. How is the top hard to get off?
  18. Thank you for the pleasant day and the nice tanks. :nfs: I have a long way to go to get up to the sort of standard that was on display, but I guess that is some thing to aim for.
  19. can remember them, cant remember what they were for, Anchor Milk?
  20. it may just be the feel of fresh/new silicone, if it doesn't actually stick to your finger when you press hard on it
  21. $63.50 http://www.reptilez.co.nz/reptile-one-30w-36-5/
  22. if you dont want to drill the tank to plumb the sump then you could do some thing like http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=52072&p=569029#p569029 just do two of them and of a bigger size, something like 1 1/2 - 2'' PVC?
  23. An update on the siphon system: Added a barbed fitting to the top most section and attached to the inlet line of my cf1200 to pull any air out of the top of the siphon - looks to work a treat. It blocked up lastnight/today at some point, blew air back through and out popped one of my bigger male Crain's bullies - quite dead
  24. I might see if I can come across to hams then, meet a few new bods and have a beer or two.
  25. GZ_Loach, a good spot near us is ruapuke beach, at the ruapuke beach rd end.
