  1. That is the person I just got some from
  2. These two are right in the front corner so not too difficult to see. That cave had only been there for a day or two, I built it on Thur the 13th in the evening as the male was defending that corner, and by lunch on the 16th they were spawning in it. The male is the one in my profile pic. There is another Cran's guarding a cave right at the back, so far back I cant see if he has any eggs in there yet, most of the female Cran's and common are starting to look gravid as is what I think is a female giant (only has 6 spines on the first dorsal) (McQueen, 2010) McQueen, S. (2010). The New Zealand Native Freshwater Aquarium. Palmerston North, New Zealand: Wet Sock.
  3. Two of my Cran's bullies have paired up and are spawning :bounce: Sorry about the poor pics but I didn't want to upset them too much Lest wait and see what happens now, any one know how till hatching and how long he will look after them?
  4. I'm doing an experiment atm to see how easy it is to raise brine shrimp to a size as to be alluring as live food for my natives, not having much success Knocked over the first lot at about 36 hours and this second lot ad a very poor hatch rate
  5. What's the min. salinity for brine shrimp: 1/ to hatch 2/ survive 3/ breed I have seen between 5 - 8 ‰ mentioned and best hatching rates at 25-35‰
  6. Sorry to hear about all your fish that have died. I cant help on that front, but you have made it hard for forum members to follow what has been going on by starting 5 topics in the last 2 days, all (from what I can see) about the same problem. I hope you can get the tank sorted before anymore deaths
  7. they looked so cute swimming around
  8. Dont know what the smell is/was but by the sounds of it you more or less have a tank with live bacteria and have done a 50% water change - this would not normally kill too many of the bacteria. Remember that the new bacteria colony will need food to survive and expand, this is either fish waste of you could feed with fish food (make a paste of flake food?)
  9. I managed to knock over my first batch of brine shrimp, just as they were starting to hatch. Oh well start again and don't be s bumble-fingered...
  10. I think there used to be some growing at anzac bay, but I cant remember seeing any last time I was there (was not looking for it though)
  11. As Stella said they can be out competed for food by faster/bigger fish, all the bullies that are in with mine are small.
  12. mine lives with 2 female redfin and 2 common ans 1 crain's bullies, with a small koura in there as well
  13. Cool Where did you get them from? Mine learnt to eat heart very fast. They love live food ie mosquito larvae, and mine eats FD bloodworms and krill well.
  14. more or less Adult whitebait species all spawn in different places, Inanga in the lowland streams/rivers, Banded and Giant Kokopu in wetlands/slower streams, Short-jawed Kokopu and Karo in faster streams with native bush cover. All in the autumn. The larvae (fry) get washed out to sea that autumn and return the next spring, so about 4 or 5 months? The whitebait then migrate to their preferred habitat to grow and then spawn. Inanga this all happens in one year but the other Galaxiid species take several years to get to a breading age.
  15. well hell, what is $6 +p&p for a little experiment
  16. Do the cheap decapsulated brine shrimp eggs on TM hatch at all, even at a low rate, or are they only good as a food in their own right?
  17. Pams table salt uses 551: ie not harmful to your tank. Rock salt will not have that in as it doent need it. I would but salt from the supermarket much cheaper than the LFS
  18. I would use 'rock' salt as well, table salt will work just as well but the anticaking agent will cloud the water. dosage 3g per litre of water. I have whitespot in my coldwater natives, gee it takes a long time to run it's life-cycle at 14deg...
  19. That is what I thought, as I have seen similar in my daphnia tank inside, but I didn't want to look like an idiot
  20. Cool, cant wait to see it full of fish, lots and lots of whitebait and a few dozen bullies :bounce: Have been thinking of doing a plywood tank, was thinking of using liquid rubber as the proofer
  21. I want to make a reply about when the clock starts, at dinner and the $10 bottle of wine?
  22. OK, statistically over due then, minor point... Well in some rock structures they can to with a day or three. If you have the right type of rock and are looking for static electricity build up and discharge you can build quite good models for future (within a few days) events. Think of the ground working like a piezo lighter in a BBQ :sage:
