  1. that would depend on the % of the water change, and the % of chlorine to start with. I think most town supply is allowed to be as high as 4 or 5 ppm but it is often 1/4 of that ie around 1ppm at the tap. most bacterium don't like levels of around about 0.2-0.4 ppm (mg/L) So a 25% water change at 1ppm free chlorine could start to kill bacteria, once the chlorine starts to react with the organic compounds in the fishtank, including bacteria, the available chlorine will fall fast. Sorry but I cant comment on the dispersal rate, but would be faster in an open vessel, and with agitation/aeration. Edit: Random webpage to back up some of the above http://www.lenntech.com/processes/disinfection/chemical/disinfectants-chlorine.htm
  2. I'm happy enough with the bio filtration of my aquaone CF1200 on my 400 l native tank, but I would like more mechanical filtration (fine particles and not so fine gunk) , or at least a higher throughput of water through the CF1200 (also running a chiller inline). What would you good folks suggest? 1. running another pump inline 1a. and also running the CF1200's pump 1b. and removing the impeller from the CF1200 What sized pump would you recommend 2000, 3000 or 5000 lpm? 2. running another pump with an inline filter ((for mechanical filtration) of some sort 2a. like a DIY inline canister 2b. like a pro inline canister 3. any other thoughts?
  3. I guess you could say that some of the bees I have kept were almost pets, and I have kept a bumblebee nest in the shed.
  4. I believe that many of the hang on filters can be modified to take bio noodles and a cut to size bit of filterwool ( or keep the fine cartridge?). this might be cheaper in the long run?
  5. If you get the container to seal then it will be sucking the water, not just gravity flow. I would drill another hole in the lid for the cord and rewire the plug, but not something I would get joe average to do unless they had a sparky mate The other way could be to take the grill off the pump and see if it can then be attached to a pipe. Goodluck
  6. Just place where you were going to put the syphon, in the return chamber? The design is easy enough once you have seen it working Correct URL here http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=52072&hilit=overflow Water is sucked in the partial syphon (short black fitting under water on left) Water flows out the pipe to the right, this sets the tank or sump water level The open pipe on the right stops a full syphon forming. In the newer design (the one I drew badly) this open pipe has anothe2 2 90deg bends so is back inside the tank, above the normal water level. If there is an emergency (say the ballcock sticks open and the tank starts to full too quickly) and the water level gets to above this open end the whole thing will turn into a full syphon
  7. That looks to be an under gravel filter on that tank
  8. I have a partial syphon system, with a drip feed, but you could use a ballcock. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=52072&hilit=overflow I have modified if further so if the tank gets too full it turns to a full syphon with a separate inlet. will draw a pic soon. Ballcock on the in flow of new water will stop the flood potential. Edit: Not to scale
  9. I have had ironsand in my 400l 4ft tank for a year now. no issues that i've seen, other than when a small power head fell to the bottom and sucked in some and it all stuck to the insides
  10. what I've used in the past is food grade silicon spray
  11. I saw these on the weekend, so cute
  12. call me old school but I just read ebooks on my phone...
  13. looks like a bitstream of 55-70 kb/s (70 (kb / s)) * 9 hours = 277 megabytes a day
  14. So cool. butterfly nets arent so good for water unless you are getting very small bullies or whitebait. a good net is the wooden handled mesh nets from the warehouse, in the smae thread is the mesh hamper? Yes, stella's second pic in this http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=51709&hilit=nets thread. I use the same one as stella. Oh good luck, if it was a different weekend I might offer to help out but I'll be somewhere north of mt damper.
  15. I think the via aqua is the older version of the aquaone CF, so an ok filter (I have a CF1200) Should be ok for a the tank for a start if the stock rate is not too high, if and when you can afford a better one the CF1200 would be a good size for that tank
  16. I was stirring, dear henward, I was stirring. But if you want a spanking...
  17. I quite like the general look but the left rock does look off to the rest of the tank. It can be hard to find good rocks that fit well in aquariums and to get the placement natural looking. I don't know if I like the fern, but that is just me.
  18. Thanks, that tall bit is quite nice, must try and get some moss to grow on it. The chiller was the one livingart wanted off buzzy (has been in the private trade section for a few weeks). Picked it up on sunday. I then went around to see Marks fish and birds etc, nice big tanks he has at naturesplace. again thanks. I found that if I dont clean the two sides against the walls I dont have to clean the front anywhere as often, and it looks better than the windows behind the tank. That is golden button, not doing so well as it did last year, normally grows emersed. He is still in this tank, you can see his cave at the bottom left of the above pic. [Edit] Just spent the last hour or so putting the chiller and filter outside (to keep the fishroom cooler, the chiller really rased the temp in there when running) and aranging all the pipework, need to get a few 20mm 90deg bends to make the plumbing neater
  19. I must say Mark has done a good job with the current building and limited space and it was goo to see it in person today, and to have a good chat with Mark. Mark, I had a wander over to the stream after we left and saw 2 or 3 giant kokopu out in the daylight (shade under the ferns) and another 3 or 4 galaxiid, small giant/banded or perhaps small adult inanga
  20. Sophia, sorry that I never replied to your question, have never tested pH or hardness. An update on the tank: Have just added a chiller to the setup :bounce: The layout is way different now with different driftwood and much more sand, a medium grained silica from lake Arapuni mixed with the black iron sand. Sand depth varies from about 30mm to 90-100mm Have a 500l/h powerhead as well as the cf1200 running, and might still add a medium wavemaker Trickle water changer installed with a partial / full syphon for overflow Stock: ~12-14 adult inanga common and Cran's bullies 200? Cran's bully eggs (three spawns on the same rock) maybe a giant bully? 2 koura. 1 this year smelt 1 torrent fish 2 Giant Kokopu and lots of algae
  21. meh 14th 16-Girls Don't Cry-Trudy Thornton(11L)
  22. With a red filter and a touch of luminosity curve?
  23. thats cool maybe I should post my screensaver
