  1. One of the many liverworts, I did have a good page to ID some of them and moss, I'll try to find it
  2. could be Fissidens berteroi, an endangered native moss although there is a bit of it around Auckland. It is slow growing, although that looks to be a good sized sample
  3. or rinse out some of the gunk from a cycled filter...
  4. I got a tank with a broken bottom and end brace, I have just cut them out and have cut a new bottom from 5mm mirror and was thinking of going rimless. I would guess that a rimless 2x1x1 in 5mm glass would be fine?
  5. http://casb.okstate.edu/casb/fishchum/index.php/scientists-featured-articles/79-freshwater-filtration-novel-insights-and-practical-considerations This read like an advertorial, especially "Selection of popular filter materials" and "The “perfect” filter", then I saw the disclaimer:
  6. /pedantic not a swordfish I dont think you will find many of them in a Tauranga Harbour Rockpool
  7. interesting /me goes and reads the whole topic from the start...
  8. This is the only image that I could find of Mugil cephalus fry, looks like what I have in my tank. From http://kimfish.com/14-115.htm I wonder if they will turnout to be a good algae eater in the aquarium once they settle in?
  9. Well they do look to have four obvious rays to the first dorsal fin so I guess I guessed right. I have a feeling that 8 mullet will out grow the ~55l tank that they are in at the moment. They are active little fish, the biggest is about 30mm, and look to be feeding by sieving the substrate
  10. bullies still should be fine, if there is concern lower the water level a few more cm
  11. Grey mullet fry? Caught in fresh water but less than 300m inland, 2-3m above high tide mark, the sane water had eels, inanga, giant bullies and koura Edit: only two have died, one on the trip home and the other before I went to bed, so there is hope.
  12. there is a pic of Ira on here if you search hard enough, hint he has been to Conference
  13. I have never had a bully jump out of any of my tanks, some have only 20 or 30mm above the top the lip. That is to say that not having a rim/lid/etc isn't necessarily neglect
  14. As mentioned in another thread I got an assortment of plants given to me for my birthday, with an accompanying list of scientific names. These have been planted for a week now and are doing fine I guess, with roots and leaves on most cuttings. Now I need to know how to best grow these plants, and ID them  About the tank: The substrate: Soil with slow release granules (unknown brand) about 20mm thick with about another 20-30mm of river sand over top. I may have over done the granules as the nitrate went off the chart even after a 80% WC, but is coming down at 40ppm thismorning The soil also got 1/4 of a pinch of FeSO4 as there are red plants - was this a good idea? Tank: 480w*270d*330h with a 70mm false wall for the filtration Light: 14w round florescent tube ~600mm? as the two tubes/fixtures in the original hood are dead. [Edit] just placed the 24w cool daylight CF above the tank as well and some of the plants started to pearl (constant stream) almost instantly Filtration: 150l/h powerhead in the 70mm void with two banks of sponge and a cup or two of lime chips to help buffer the water CO2: DIY into powerhead venturi Fish: None as yet Just after filling: Next day: About 5 days: Plants (I think): Bacopa monnieri Cardamine lyrata - I think I will need to move this plant Gratiola sexdentata - Not sure where/what this is Heteranthera zosteraefolia Hygrophila angustifolia - Not sure where/what this is Hygrophila polysperma Ludwigia brevipes Ludwigia repens Ludwigia glandulosa Lysimachia nummulariifolia & “Aurea” Rorippa spp - Not sure where/what this is Rotala rotundifolia Saururus cernuus Is there enough light? Should I dose fertiliser, and what? Eleocharis acuta - only one plant, in my small WCMM/bully tank Crassula helmsii - Floating in my small WCMM/bully tank atm Acorus gamineus -“nana” & ”Variegatus” These are growing in a planter box above my native tank that has a trickle feed from the filter return. Do I need to do anything for these?
  15. Not normal for the aquaone CF range. I have a CF1200 and have to place my hand on it to tell if it is running unless there are air bubbles in it. To clear bubbles tilt it back and forth, can be quite hard shakes - within reason, to dislodge any air. If this doesn't work have a look at the impeller and shaft
  16. Isn't it that large tropical thing in the middle? would look good planted :digH:
  17. Thanks for the comments Our drab native fish What big teeth I have
  18. Here Sophia, I fixed your post for you :sml1:
  19. Bullies are normally fast to learn new foods, but it could take a week or more, once one is feeding I thing the others will learn fast - or starve (they should be fine for a week or two as the males hardly eat when guarding their nests, about 3 weeks). I have never tried to start them on frozen bloodworms just live food and heart. I found that with FD bloodworms one brand all the natives love (AHT) but another (Jinbida) no one will touch. They also love AHT's FD Krill if the fish are big enough.
  20. Always take what Ira says with a grain of salt, it will take at least twice that long to get it in the correct position, unless you are as gifted as he is.
  21. Nice fat (gravid?) inanga, the only problem that I can see with catching them this time of year and as mature adults is that they may be too sexually mature and will die of being egg bound etc. In the last 4 weeks i have had atleast 3 of my largest inanga die, all coming to the end of their second summer.
  22. Canon supporters just can't help themselves I'm impressed with the macro for a point n click, that 100% zoom/crop above is of a bully of only ~65mm
  23. I got 6 and the Mrs 0 More intresting to see where peoples colour is lacking: Mine SWMBO
  24. Was looking at a Canon, but decided on the Nikon. This is the fifth Nikon in the house so was almost inevitable Edit: crop to near 100% on the last image
  25. Got myself a nikon aw100 for my birthday :bounce: 10m waterproof 16meg GPS 5-25mm etc Now I have to get used to driving a point n click and not a DSLR (The DSLR will still be used for 'real' photos)
