  1. yes the parasite embeds it's self just under the skin, can be on the gills as well. I believe that salt will work as well as any commercial product.
  2. So 1 tsp / L is ~0.3% added over 24 hours. so weigh about 250 - 300g of salt and dissolve in water, add 1/3 of that every 8hours or so. You will need to keep the 0.3% salt for a good week, while doing water changes. I would weigh up another 250g and dissolve in water, do 1/3 w/c every day or 2 days and each time add in 1/3 of this second lot of salt (you could do 1/4 w/c and add in 1/4 of the salt mix). When doing these w/c vac the bottom of the tank.
  3. Saying that - my large 430l never looks to read 0 always looks to be about .25 and it has been running for nigh on a year and a half, I figure that there just must be something in there that affects the test. I would stop the w/c for a day or three and see if 1, the ammonia climbs (means not finished the first part of the cycle) 2, the nitrite climbs (means not finished the second part of the cycle) 3, the nitrate climbs (means N cycle is setup)
  4. I believe that platys are ok with salt so for whitespot you could use between 3 and 6g per L of water (1 tsp ~6g) Table salt will make the water cloudy (anti-caking agents), I have used rocksalt on my natives.
  5. Depends on the region, in the upper north island rudd and perch? are around but are not considered pest fish, but are considered pest fish in other regions. I think that there are sailfin mollies at little waihi on taupo, swardtails and guppies in some rotorua/reporoa thermal streams, I also believe that there have/still are others Oh and trout/gambusia
  6. Good on you and good luck Councils can get behind these sorts of ideas, ours supports Maungatautari, and they have released kokopu in some of the streams around the mountain
  7. I wonder if anyone would have a white or black worm culture to sell?
  8. Welcome along, always good to see someone interested in natives. Will be good to see a 800l native build thread, hint hint... Have a pop down to Marks place LivingArt/Natures place and have a look at his large native setup.
  9. Left it open and then lifted the baskets out twice, wont feed them (fish) for a day or two to let it stabilise a bit.

  11. Something funny I just found out: If you shine the light through the side of the tank WCMM will swim/display on almost their sides or vertically :slfg:
  12. I was using 3G, but could have used the ADSL if needed as we have an inverter, power came back about 4.15 ish I was down at Mega about lunchtime and there were a few bodies getting small camp stoves and they had as the first thing you see as you walk in the door 2.5KV generators, I wonder how many they sold?
  13. You are just adding volume to the system in reality, Any new fish may/will cause a small ammonia spike as the microorganisms catch up to the bio-load, just like adding new fish to any system.
  14. The light has been off their tank so they are a bit flighty. You can see the very orange fin tips in both photos
  15. I went to rinse out the filter wool in my cf1200 and placed the first tray with coarse sponge/fine sponge/wool on the top of the chiller. I then went and hosed it out and rinsed the fine sponge and put the try back into the filter and glanced down to where I had left the tray to see the small puddle of water teaming with life: Edit: try new URLs
  16. This is really expensive "Naturally Sorted (Mangauika Mixed Grade), Aquarium Safe, Aquarium Substrate", I have some spare that I could send you for, say, $5 per KG plus P&H My main tank is still suffering from cyano as well... The new tank is plumbed into the 50l planted one now.
  17. Melicope ternata / Wharangi?
  18. Power has been off for 5 hours so far today, could be another 3 yet... Off to do a water change
  19. In place (for now) and fill. Just need a pump and an overflow and I'll plumb it into the planted tank above, I guess that would make it a sump... Please excuse the two rocks holding the wood under
  20. A couple of my WCMM have fins edged in deep yellow, almost orange, where most are pale lemon. I want the get these darker ones to breed at some time...
  21. Niwa says 20y, I believe that Charles Mitchell had one that he had had for 8 years. I wonder if she is still alive?
  22. SWMBO said it looked silly sticking out...
