  1. piranhas have disappeared from kelly tarltons. anyone know why? moreover, anyone know where they went??
  2. yep i had a bristlenose once that nosed into a hole in a ceramic ornament, and got stuck. he was in there two weeks before i had a go at pulling him out. couldn't pull him out, he was wedged in there. so i smashed the ornament with a hammer, freeing the bristlenose. when i put him back in the tank he just sunk upside down on the bottom for like 5 mins, then slowly came to. he was completely fine after an hour or so, and lived happily ever after till an oscar bit him in half...
  3. kids didn't seem as intent on sitting and staring at fish in jars as i was... they flutter off to the next exhibit like bees on flowers with no nectar. i wouldn't mind being able to go sit and stare at stuff, and absorb all the information presented without being dragged around by my own fry.
  4. we went last weekend, very cool exhibit! life size model of a huge great white shark! awesome. the preserved giant crabs and deep sea fish were also cool to see. we sat on bean bags watching that underwater screen for ages! i'm also gonna mention, in the museum itself there is also a large area dedicated to fish and the ocean, and a few fish tanks set up throughout. morays, marine, nz marine, nz native, crayfish etc etc and it's free
  5. if it has a mate or fry it will be agro. a single convict on it's own is a lot calmer than one that is breeding or has fry
  6. looks like you had a fun day! awesome bro
  7. definitely interested to see if young spawning slows or stunts growth. the male i mentioned that spawned while young then killed it's missus, spontaneously died a few weeks later of unknown causes.
  8. yep i have these guys and have had for a while. posts above are correct. good info. the last lot i got were the spawn of a pair that were only 6-7cm long. so you won't need a huge tank. but keep your eye on them. after my carpintis parents spawned, and the fry were removed, the male killed the female. i find they are hardy fish, easy to keep, will eat anything, just like most american cichlids. and they look amazing when they get large. at the moment my male is around 7cm and in a holding tank as he got the bash from my breeding convicts.
  9. we saw a few of those little brown skinks running around carine while we were there. in case you were wondering what i was doing reaching under a random pallet of fishponds.
  10. this thread should be in the entomological acupuncture section.
  11. my last couple of oscars would fight half the time, and be best friends the other half of the time. there was no telling what kind of mood the other would be in! they were both pretty evenly matched in size and strength, they never caused each other any injury. the injuries came from them crashing into pointy driftwood or bricks whilst in the middle of a fight.
  12. nice fish beets! never kept the pink ones myself. i'm a fan of the black and grey colours. my male is around a year old i'm guessing. hasn't developed much of a hump yet.
  13. but none of you know for sure because you've never tried it.
  14. the strong ones will survive in an unheated tank but i don't think they would be very happy. they would probably be very inactive, and not eat much, so they would grow very slowly.
  15. riccia is good surface plant. gets thick and bushy and doesn't need to be attached to anything. talk to godlyevil for some riccia. ambulia will also grow to the top and then grow horizontally thus covering the surface of the water, you probably already know this...
  16. want me to grow some out for you wacko jacko?
  17. nah it won't kill your fish. i would not recommend turning it off for much longer than 9 hours though.
  18. i'd say dambusia are pretty good at eating young shrimp. net them, kill them, put them back
  19. yeah i've never had trouble finding shrimp amongst underwater vegetation. my fish looooove eating them
  20. having the sound of running water in my room just makes me get up to pee more often. other than that, it doesn't bother me, quite soothing really.
  21. yeah they are super stroppy at the moment! and yeah first fish i've ever bred - hopefully successfully! i have a grow out tank ready for them
  22. finally got my beautiful girl to spawn with a very handsome male i found a couple of weeks ago. very excited! watch this space for some high quality convicts coming soon!
