    i dunno but whenever i turn my filters off for a little while, once they go back on they blow a whole lot of crap back into the tank. even when they've just been cleaned. what is the reason you want to turn them off? just because of the noise? or...

    vinyl would be a good idea. sam's full of good ideas, you will come to learn as long as you can get the black stuff to stick firmly to the back of the tank, it should be okay. what about duraseal?

    using felt or paper is never gonna look as good as if you painted it, as you will see both the glass and the black stuff. imo.

    i'm not a clever man. but i thought nz natives would be able to handle such a low temperature, since they live in rivers that get really really cold. is 4 degrees just too cold, or was it the sudden change in temp? :dno:

    so... are you wanting to pull out the names of all the large sized catfish from the list to see what is available here? aside from synos, hoplos, chocolate talking, sun, i'm not sure of any others either. but i want a large catfish too.

    maybe some fert balls down in the sand by the plants would help the plants look a bit greener. a twiggy piece of driftwood would help to add height to the tank.

    in light of that information, i retract my previous suggestion, and suggest a female jag, if you need to get a jag.

    the green texas cichlid would be suitable, google "Herichthys carpintis" electric blue jack dempseys would add some nice blue to your tank. also, green terrors, or blue acara. for reds you could look into blood parrots, but they are ugly! as you can tell i am a cichlid fan! you could also look at different types of geophagus, very colourful and peaceful fish. all of the above are widely available in nz.

    yea i dont know a lot about fronts. but a team of them vs a single jag would not be a fair fight imo

    red terrors or festae are here but hard to get a hold of at the moment. if you find any, let me know. if you're gonna get a jag with all those fronts, make it a male jag, as it will be more aggressive and less likely to get bullied by the fronts. keep in mind that a 18cm jag will get to 40-50cm in a year or two. it sounds to me like you have a decision to make regarding which direction you want to take in fishkeeping. african, or american. i'm all for americans.

    tank size is ample for a couple of sevs. tank mates are fine, but sevs prefer low PH while the electric yellows prefer high PH. if you can keep the PH around 7 then all should be well.

    congo tetra are my second favourite tetra, next to piranhas.
