  1. Since fish larvae eat plankton in the wild would it be possible to grow a them in an aquarium in large enough amounts for babies to eat through them whenever they please? Giving them a constant source of food so they dont get hungry waiting for me to give them their microworms and bbs. I have noticed my babies pick around the heater and filter at seemingly nothing and have tummies that are black instead of white or orange if they were eating microworms or bbs. But there isn't enough to sustain them and it only fills their tummies up halfway so can I make the population of these plankton increase enough to sustain a spawns first week or two? I've seen the occasional small ball like thing darting through the water but they are way to fast for the fry to catch
  2. Ive heard very bad things from this seller. Not replying to emails, not sending fish in over night courier etc... and he doesn't seem to know what he is selling, making things up like "veil tail plakats" which look exactly like vt...
  3. Wow very nice fish over there! Especially the dragon pk and the first hm
  4. I would if I could. Ideally I'd want a copper or dragon to get some nice spread irids on a black base in there but since this is the only plakat female I can find I'll have to make do. Haha unless someone has a decent female too sell  like a copper, black, dragon I'd even take a blue
  5. Perfect, I'll set up a spawn with black then. Thanks for your help
  6. Thanks for your reply Sounds like I'll get a lolly mixture then Do you recommend going for the red or the black guy? I do think the black has way better fins and body than red guy but do you think the red would give me some bright red fish in the mix? I would like to try and get some nice red pks (like the red vts) instead of the browny red most pks are. Right now I'm leaning towards black for his better fins The reason I'm using this female is because its the only female I have and the only pk I can find. I'm hoping that the smooth toplines of the unrelated males will compensate for this bump and I will do some culling if I see it popping up
  7. I'm having trouble deciding what male to breed to my cambodian female pk and cant decide what male will give me the best colour quality since none of them are an ideal match Does anyone have experience crossing a cambodian with any of these colours? Heres the girl My best male is a black lace. But crossing a black fish to a fish that has black loss might not be a good idea, plus both colours are recessive so do you think I will get washed out blacks or some other ugly colour? Then theres this wildtype red guy. And lastly theres her brother who is a royal blue. But he has a bump on his head like his sister which I really dont want to make more of. So any tips/advice/experience on what crosses has worked in the past? What kinds of results did you get?
  8. I breed/keep fighters because playing with their genetics is fun since each time you breed a fighter the result is either an improvement or decline on the quality of the parents and its fun setting goals and selectively breeding them to reach them :smln: Plus they are happy little fish who arent shy of people and like swimming into my hands
  9. My cat likes to walk on a harness...
  10. I went down to bunnings and got a fish tub that the manufacture said was food grade. I've got some neons testing their claim so far they appear ok though. They seem to be the same one as those ones at mitre10mega except $1.00 cheaper haha. This is very handy info I'll keep it in mind for when I hunt for some more, I found one that has dividers which would be pretty handy for fighters so I'll see what they are made out of. Sweet, I'll check out the warehouse as well, I'll see if the have any see through ones. Neons arent too fun to look at with a birds eye view.
  11. you can look forward to aftershocks now you lucky things  Get a power generator, literally life savers when the power goes out.
  12. Felt it down here in chch Hope none of your tanks have broken and you are all alright
  13. Thats really cheap and would be a good growout tank  . Are they food grade though?
  14. I need it to be a spawning tub so i dont mind if i cant see into it. haha i just need something that can hold water. Oh yeah, I know the tower drawers your talking about, they would be pretty good actually
  15. Awesome  I'll have a hunt at bunnings tomorow. So anything PVC is safe? Thanks for your help :-D
  16. I'm looking for plastic tubs for breeding my fighters since they don't break if an earthquake gets them and they are pretty cheap. I found some really good ones at the warehouse but I'm scared that they will leach chemicals, and it doesn't say if they are food grade or not. Is there a way to tell if they are safe for fish? or where I might get a decent tub thats safe? I've tried trademe but the only food grade things they have are buckets which isn't really what I'm after
  17. Ohh we need a few pics then Them and elephant ears seem to be the popular thing going round at the moment
  18. Yeah I thought so. So when they are saying pk x orchid its just a pk x ct... I wonder if we still get black orchid in other tail types here, I know we have or used to have them in hm
  19. I've been seeing the term "orchid fighters" around lately. Like "pk x orchid" What are these? The only thing I can think of them being are black orchids but that's a colour not a tailtype...
  20. Whats dragon stone? I've found the best way to make a rock smaller is to smash it with a rock hammer
  21. http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/03/30/plastic-eating-bacteria-found-in-ocean-desert-scientist-says/ A plastic eating bacteria may be a solution
  22. :tears: thats very sad. Luckily in nz we don't see that kind of treatment
  23. Is it possible to cover the sides of the breeding net so he cant see into it?
  24. If they can see each other it wont work. usually if they haven't done anything by 4 days I count it as a failed spawn and start again
  25. How long have they been together for? Is the male still chasing her and trying to get her under the nest? Whats the females reacion to him? If they are ignoring each other then I'd seperate them where they cant see each other for about a week and try again. I find a small water change helps get them in the mood.
