  1. Good luck. Would be interestng to see how the ears are inherited. Keep us updated!
  2. I see both sides of crossing certain tail types. One side is that since our selection is tiny we dont want to make it even harder to get decent fish by creating mutts however, if you are working towards a goal we kind of have to make do with what we can get hold of I'm pretty excited I just bought a little dragon influenced turquoise girl with dt geno  I'm still debating which guy i should breed her to, I'm leaning towards my little blue pk since the dragon should thicken up his scaling and F2 should bring up some nice pks. Cant wait for her to arrive, I havent shipped a fish in ages, its always exciting. I agree, plakats are by far the best ones! I dunno, when they are bred well they can be amazing looking fish. This guy even reaches 180 I would love to have this VT.
  3. Ryanjury might be able to do it but if not then its in Astley Ave New Lynn if thats not too far from anyone. haha its a fighter of course
  4. Theres a fish on trademe that im quite intrested in however, the owner isnt to keen on shipping. Is there anyone in Auckland city who could collect and ship the fish to chch if i win the fish? Thanks
  5. :happy1: This is very good news I have pk spawn but all are females except for one male I was pretty disappointed. But yeah, I still breed when I find a decent pair to work with. Lately all the shops round here are VTs and low quality CTs. Still trolling trade me though for some good ones.
  6. My tanks crashed in the second one. I had to rumage through glass shards picking up tiny juvie fighters and drop them into the dogs water bowl. And to top it off, power went out too..found them all though  My last two tiny tanks that they are in are now strapped and braced to every possible thing and so is the cabinet. It will have be a tough earthquake to get them off.
  7. Yuss! :happy1: My rainwater supply was running low
  8. Or you could have been sold a male plakat. I scored 2 that were sold as females
  9. I love sims! gotta save up for sims 3 pets  I cycle through addiction and boredom with the game but creating the sims, pets and houses are my favourite things. http://www.collegehumor.com/video/5665288/the-sims-horror-movie
  10. Oh good question. I'd be so happy if we have B. mahachai or smaragdina
  11. Awesome! My goal over summer will be to build a compost pile and find the best way to set up a system suitable for growing fighters. I'll have betta ponds all over the place. Haha blackbirds wont be a problem, my dog thinks its his duty to destroy every bird that enters the property  In winter do you think the composts temp would remain constant? Time to do some lawn mowing I think, I think I have/had some pallet wood lying around somewhere. I'm wondering if it would be possible to tap into the hottest part and send it through a system that cools it down before it reaches the tub...? Hmm I've got a lot of trial and error to do.. I'll most likely fail but then I will be able to sleep easy knowing that it cant be done with my abilities.
  12. Ooh thats a bit hot... Would there be a way to keep it at a cooler temp maybe by sitting it on top of the compost so only the bottom is being heated and the rest is exposed to the air so it cools down? Does compost have the same temperature in all any quantity, for example, would a small amount around the edges have a lower temp than a tank with a lot around the edges, or is the temperature constant?
  13. During study my mind often wanders...just tonight I had a thought. Would it be possible to heat tubs outdoors in compost? or would this get too hot?
  14. So I was bored and decided to learn how to import fish into nz (not that I could ever dream of having that kind of money) and I found batch testing. Then I learnt that in Australia, batch testing is when they kill a bunch of certain species and test them for viruses. I assumed that this is the same process for nz. Then my mind got wandering Since bettas on the batch testing list, if I wanted to buy one betta from overseas would they make me buy more so they could test them? Or what if I buy a whole bunch of bettas with different tail types, would I get to choose the ones they kill or is it just luck. For example if I bought high quality HM, PK and some run of the mill VTs all from the same breeder and they left me with only the VTs... It would defeat the purpose of importing them, since they left me with the fish I didn't really want. Is this how it works in NZ or has my mind completely misunderstood the process of batch testing?
  15. I was googling what tail types of bettas we had in nz and their breeders

  18. Duh obviously a fighter haha, the resemblance to a real betta is uncanny. I picked up the aviverm today and gave all the tanks some except for my breeding tank because it has 4 day old fry in it and I'm too scared to add things to their water. Are these worms able to use tiny fry as their hosts? I'm feeling optimistic now after hearing that results can be seen after 2 days, I'll remain vigilant and complete the full dosage I'll be lucky if the guy in my picture makes it...they managed to poke out in new places in the course of a day...
  19. Argh they dont sound good!! I'll be off to get some aviverm tomorrow and annihilate them from all my tanks...I'm pretty sure I mixed their water and I always use the same net...after googling camalnaus I learnt that even not washing your hands when you fiddle round in each tank is enough to spread them. Thank you so much for your help Do you think theres a good chance of the guy in the picture surviving? apart from having clamped fins and sometimes trouble staying horizontal in the water, he still behaves normaly, flaring and looking for food scraps
  20. I've just noticed small red wormy things sticking out of the anus of one of my fish. I couldnt get a photo so I drew one of what he looks like... They even move... Any idea of what these are and how to kill them? So far I've only given him salt :nilly:
  21. Just checked on him, his "bruises" have spread to almost all of his body and he is now swimming on his side when he needs air... so I took him out and put him in some water with tannins and salt Im pretty sure its the "bruises" that are killing him but what are they... :nilly: Time for a google search...
  22. Hmm this seems similar to what I'm experiencing with one of my bettas. I noticed some white fluffy stuff taking advantage of some fin damage, gave it furan for a few days, white stuffs going but now there are large reddish patches on his sides, fins are now clamped and hes lying on the bottom... only his eyes move...Do you thnk furan could be contributing to these bruises? My betta has gotten worse since I've used it.
