  1. Aren't there some in the estuary by paraparaumu - on the road that goes over the hill to the hutt? not far from the roundabout off highway 1 before you start going up. I'm sure there was some there when my cousin was windsurfing in there... it's been a long time since i was there though.
  2. Yeah, I was going to say aqua knead it would be my choice. Also - I've had really good service from Bay Plastic in Tauranga. They ship and are really cheap. They also cut to exact dimensions and only charge you what you buy, not the whole sheet, so you only pay for what you use. I had my 1200x30x3 dividers sent up in a day and including courier it cost me around $20 for 2 dividers. http://www.bayplastic.co.nz is their url I think.
  3. Hmmm, no other white spot treatment that doesn't stain? Maybe I should buy Henwards 3 footer and transfer the fish and filter there and treat it without the plants getting damaged. Give the existing tank 10+ days for the spores to die off at a higher temp with no hosts (must make sure the shrimp are out of there before I crank the heat). I've just sold this as a great idea to the wife. Also waiting for Henward to reply to my PM. Just saying...
  4. +1 but I haven't had one fail yet. I have noticed that in my 22L tank the temp was a bit unsteady for the first couple of weeks but the aqua one settled in after that. Only a degree or 2 at the most in fluctuation so nothing to worry about and never over the temp you've set - it just kicks in a bit late.
  5. OK, thanks. Should I go back for a different white spot treatment or just harden the **** up? Is there anything different / better to use that doesn't do this?
  6. I have an outbreak of ich and the lfs said to use wunder tonic to treat it. I now note the wunder tonic may damage plants and may stain silicone. I've got a fairly heavily planted tank that needs treating and I really don't want to stain the silicone. 1) Will it definitely stain the silicone? 2) Will it definitely harm the plants? Has anybody used wunder tonic in the same situation and not had the staining/plant damage?
  7. Apathy sucks and too often this is the case in NZ. I'm only new to the hobby but I'm already considering setting up a breeding program for the fish that I really like. My only problem is that I'd like to do it as more than a hobby and would seriously look into breeding 'special' imports if the market was there. I don't mean to make money out of it but to at least be able to sell the fish I can breed on to people that actually want them and will pay what they're worth. The last thing I'd want to happen is sink a lot of money into breeding some awesome fish that were on the list but not usually imported to find that the 10 people that said "hell yeah, I want some" then weren't interested a year or so later when the stock became available. I suspect this is the standard feeling amongst most local breeders - especially the ones that rely on it for a living. I equate it to 'the covers band' music theory - if they don't now the music they won't buy it. there is no point being an awesome covers band that does [insert relatively unknown but awesome musician here] songs really well when people in the pub won't give a shit and will most likely leave. "Play something we all know bro!" Anybody want to buy some guppies?
  8. I believe if you grew it you can use it. Whether or not it's ethical is another question but then who would care? Unless you're feeding high grade aro's to your pet sharks...
  9. If I were to go down the powerhead route where should I put them? I'm generally unsure of how the movement should be.
  10. Hi all, Tank is 1200 long and only 250Hx250D (all in mm - just to be clear) and I'm having trouble with dead spots. At the moment I've got a spray bar off my 2224 at one end under the bracing (picture a tank built by Greg if you know them) which I cut down to fit across the top (about 200mm long after the elbow). It's creating a nice ripple/wave at the top but not really creating any major water movement. The intake is at the other end of the tank behind a few plants. If I look at the surface there is quite the whirlpool but in general most of the crud in the tank falls below the spray bar - ie. at the wrong end of the tank. Can anybody give me any suggestions for better layouts? I have plants along the back of the tank and at the intake end if that helps with ideas. I'm thinking I'll go and get the eheim installation kits for intake/output but I still some ideas on how to set up the water flow. I was thinking of trying to get a spray bar the entire length of the back wall but this may be overkill and the pump might not be up to it. Appreciate any suggestions/help on this one.

Someone suggested earlier that you can get slate tiles from bunnings / the warehouse and smash them to make cool looking pieces of slate that can then be stacked.
  12. Sucks that rays aren't allowed. I wonder though, what's to stop people netting local rays? I like the idea of a nz saltwater tank with snapper, crays, a DSB with scallops and some octopi (to scare the kids).
  13. Super Shuttle / Co-op Taxi's run shuttles from there for all/most domestic flights. Sounds like you might have the personal service on offer though.
  14. I tried the smart start in my tropical tank and it didn't work as directed. I'd be interested to see if it works for you.
  15. I think we paid $300ish for our household one. They're more than you expect but not a killer.
  16. I've just spotted at least 8 fry in my guppy tank hiding in the ambulia. The adults are trying to get in there but they're pretty safe for now. I don't really mind if they all get eaten as the last thing I need is more guppies but it's nice to know they've got a fighting chance. With 5 females spawning at hte same time I'm sure I'll get a few out of each spawn that survive in the ambulia until they're big enough to venture out.
  17. Liquid nails or another adhesive of some sort? Do you have to be able to remove it at a later date? What are the walls made of that you're joining it to? If wood, not gib board, you could just use screws through the poly that way it's removable when you leave there.
  18. I'm pretty sure this is the last female there was in the tank. You're right, they are tiny compared to the males we got from Avondale. She was completely different looking to the males in the same tank so I'm sure she is a she. Can somebody confirm? excuse the algae on the sand, I had just done a wall scrape and hadn't siphoned it out yet.
  19. Did you get the female from the same source? I'm on the hunt for one still too.
  20. I have their entire back catalogue. They're (he is?) awesome!
  21. I can attest that they don't like being "out of the cage" if that helps you decipher it
