  1. all happier this morning in the tank?
  2. actually, is it too late to apply for an AFS scholarship? Do they still do those? I may be showing my age now...
  3. Hate to say it but before NCEA all the same things happened and nothing could be done about it then. Nothing stopping you studying English in Thailand if you want to though.
  4. My wife is a secondary teacher, I'll check with her when she gets home but I'm pretty sure it's fairly late in the year.
  5. That suggests that oxygenating water would have the opposite effect of adding co2? Usually co2 makes ph go down when added to a planted tank so oxygenating more could lower the acidity and make the move to 8.0+?
  6. I've never heard of oxygen levels changing ph but that doesn't mean it's not true. I have made my ph go through the roof by overfeeding in my uncycled tank with a new filter though - but that was making it acidic so going the other way.
  7. let us know how it goes. Do a big water change at the same time as chances are your ammonia has just gone through the roof. Where in Auckland are you? If you're worried about the ones you have left I'm sure there are people nearby that will babysit them for you.
  8. Ahh, that's why we said run both for as long as you can. Chuck the old one back in there now and run them both for a few weeks at least. Hopefully that saves the day. Basically you've taken the good bacteria out and transfered a little bit of it to the new filter while expecting the new filter to colonise and be able to handle the bio load instantly. If you put the jewel back in there now you should find that it all comes right again as long as the media in the jewel hasn't been dry for too long (or washed in tap water).
  9. I had the same thing happen to one of my guppies, he practically had no tail left. I was gutted when I first noticed and felt really bad form him but then I realised last night that he's got a full tail again and I haven't cared about it for weeks now. He's never been happier.
  10. There are going to be times at uni, and later in life, where you just have to slog through the boring stuff and prove you can still do your job. Stick with 7th form, keep up the practise of studying, get year 13 ncea to put in your CV (or cambridge at St Cuths?) and then take the Bsc head on in the same year as your peers. It'd be awesome if you do get into AKL this year but don't leave school if you don't.
  11. Not at all. I think I know where you're going with this - it's going to have less stock than the 75L does at the moment so as soon as I change it to the bigger tank there'll be less for the bacteria to live on and they'll die off anyway? Ultimately it'll have enough for the 2 cannisters worth of bio media to be working well but on day one it won't have the load to support the bacteria base.
  12. That's what I was wondering. I seems to come out on the side partition wall on the right so maybe in the room/space next to the tank?
  13. Is it going to be easier to strip then rebuild the tank if I actually take it down to a pile of bare panes or should I do one seal at a time to hold it's shape? I'm woried that if I do more than one join i'll never be able to line it all up properly again. I also suspect the the most important join is to the base pane and figure all the joins should be started there to get a level and potentially better seal. I think I just answered my own question - I'm stripping it down to nothing. That way I can probably polish the crap off the glass on a flat surface instead of hanging on my side in the tank. When I come to put it all back together is there some sort of jig I should use for the corner joints or is it a case of holding it in place until the silicone starts to hold it's own then taping and letting it cure? Can you tell I've never done this before? I suspect I'm overthinking everything.
  14. I found that on mine the 2 teaspoons was far too much and I've gone back to half a tea spoon. All good though - it now lasts 3 weeks or so without refilling.
  15. Yeah, that's why I'm trying to get these set up. The 700L is being torn down / rebuilt over the next few weeks and I figure I've got a few weeks to get the filters ready.
  16. Have no fear on this one. it's a generic indoor monster fish tank made with plywood and rubber sealer inside an office / house with false cielings. Looks fairly well built but really averagely decorated / scaped. Good on the builder though. It's certainly something I'd like to do.
  17. Ahh, I didn't think of that but I can see now how the pumps would fight each other. Thanks, I've decided against it and will wait until the big tank is ready to unbox the second one. New things smell nice.
  18. And just like that it's back to you!
  19. Haha, mine's a long way off. Stripping silicone sucks. I'm now trying to figure out how to get the last little bits off between the sides so I can reseal them. I can't seperate them much as I'm doing one joint at a time to keep the shape and use the rest of the tank as the jig. I'll get there.
  20. I'm crap at this sort of thing so I asked the internets and this one surprised me - Four jolly men sat down to play, And played all night till break of day. They played for cash and not for fun, With a separate score for every one. When it came time to square accounts, they all had made quite fair amounts. Now, not one has lost and all have gained - Tell me now, this can you explain?
  21. yeah, I guess I can always just split the media across the 2 filters when it comes time to run them up anyway. Right - don't mind me Oh - thanks for the contact about the filter socks - I've been in touch with them.
  22. Exactly. I'd have to remove the lids to get any more pipes in.
  23. Yeah, I realised I didn't explain the reason so I was busy editing when you replied. I'm out of space for fittings so can't get another set in the tank unfortunately.
