  1. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=48031&hilit=heatloss+calculator
  2. Do you have good flow around the tank? No poo's lying around for too long?
  3. blueether have you kept young trout in your tank before? If yes how do they adapt to tank life? easy to feed? etc. Cheers
  4. Second pic has a painted prawn and a small rock with some seaweed kinda growth on it (turfing pink paint Corallina officinalis I think) in the background. Yeah I should really pay more attention to my FW fish... they are looking good though.. especially the G. altifrons I got are looking so nice now that they are growing up. Ok will work on a thread with my FW fishies.
  5. What's with all the throwing :slfg: But seriously platys guppies swords would probably thrive in there and breed like mad if you THROW in some java moss for cover too
  6. A few more pics. So far all inhabitants are from Piha Painted Prawn: Robust Triplefin: (I think) Robust Triplefin juvenile (I think) Glass Shrimp:
  7. Try googling first flush device rainwater collection. It's a chamber where the first flush of rainwater (extra dirty) runs into before water is diverted to your collection tank. Helps on the bird poo issue
  8. Yep that would work, especially if that other tank is a tad bit colder... I find that there are usually at least two males chasing a female when she is laying eggs.
  9. You obviously couldn't pass up the opportunity for some shrimps, snails and a crab either
  10. Good work on the Sterbais! And no they will never stop.. Just let your Discus get a treat now and again
  11. Not to be a killjoy but why are you going looking for stuff tonight if you haven't even set up a tank yet?
  12. I find that if I do a very large water change (50%+) then I sometimes get a slight milky haze right after. Definitely not a bacterial bloom or dust.. Something to do with mixing mature tank water and tap water I think (different mineral content, ph, etc.) but it always goes away in a day or so.
  13. This is one device I really think is stupid! Yes it will collect poo and large particles but you would be pumping potential amonia rich water into the free moving water. Very poor concept IMO
  14. :slfg: Yeah I'm having a similar problem. It shifts my interest away from my other tanks.
  15. Why does it suck? I thought easy access was a good thing! :slfg: I like the idea of not having all the plumbing a separate sump has. As long as you can get enough height/pressure to push water through your media.
  16. Sneaked in with a flashlight last night and one of the Painted Prawns had just released a snowstorm of little babies. I suppose they don't really stand a chance being sucked through pumps several times and in any case they won't have much food avaliable to them.. Anyone had same experience?
  17. Cool.. I assume you mean outside the reserve
  18. Anemones, more small fish, whatever grows on the rocks, starfish perhaps.. I haven't been snorkling for stuff yet.. only picking stuff off walls inside a cave, hehe. There are lots of other kinds of Anemones on the west coast in all sorts of colours but yes I would love to find some jewels.
  19. Ok time to finally show this tank. Tank has been "brewing" for around 4 months (ingredients: Coral Sand, Coral Rock & Seawater) and finally this weekend I introduced the first inhabitants to the tank. 1 Triplefin, 4 Shrimp, 5 Snails and some tiny Chitons. All collected from inside "The Keyhole" at South Piha, West Auckland. This has got to be the most fun I've had in fishkeeping for many years! :happy1:
  20. Perhaps :smot: but: Even if it is stronger what would be the point? Surely toughened would be quite expensive as you would need to order new glass made to size
  21. Such a show off
  22. I would relocate fish to another tank/bin for a few days while you blitz the tank with above chemical. Then do large wc's and put fish back in.
  23. According to link above it is ok as long as it does not contain organic matter and come in factory packed bags. So manado, fluorite etc should be fine
  24. I considered doing the same for fluorite and never even thought of permit etc. For me it was also the weight issue that killed the idea. Would be interesting to know though
