  1. I used to have blue acaras years ago - a beautiful fish.
  2. I reckon it's the weight of pies' new marine tank settling that is causing the quakes in Welly
  3. One of our members drives over the Whangamoa mountain range from Nelson to attend our meetings. That is 2 and a half hours each way. The working evenings are still a problem though aren't they? You could always start a club up yourself in your area. Make it meet on Sunday afternoons perhaps. Our club used to do this.
  4. Never thought of plants in the sump. Mine will be inside the solid wooden stand so wouldn't grow too well unless I put lights in it.
  5. There have been several queries regarding the availability of back issues of the NZ Aquarium World magazine. I have a number of the following issues. Please remember these were back in the days when we couldn't afford colour. Some have colour covers but the pages are all black and white only. $1 per magazine plus postage... Feb 1997 Aug 1998 Feb 1999 All 2000 except May All 2001 All 2002 Feb/May 2003 (2 months combined) Nov 2003 (August 2001 - Feb/May 2003 are all around 28 pages, rather than the usual 40, and had a different editor) First in first served. PM me.
  6. Remember it is cheaper to buy a tank direct from the glazier than from a pet shop but they do not have the fancy stand with them.
  7. There is a club in Timaru but they pulled out of the FNZAS a while back so you would not get the magazine or any other stuff through them. I am sure they have members who swap plants and fish though! Check out the FNZAS Clubs section for a new thread about back issues of the magazine.
  8. Welcome aboard! I love shoals of rummy noses, they look great.
  9. Quite old ones, yes. The last couple of years, no.
  10. I had a local rockpool set-up running but didn't have a chiller so had problems with heat over summer. I just went to the rock pools, gathered critters, rocks and water and took it all home and put it in a 3ft tank with an Aquaclear 500 filter. Most interesting tank we ever had. It was stocked with shrimps, anemones, sea cucumbers, triplefins, rockfish, brittlestars, starfish, hermit crabs, chitons and anything else we could catch. Every so often I would top the tank up with fresh seawater and add some sea lettuce.
  11. Now now mystic - share!
  12. They come out in Feb, May, Aug and Nov. If you joined your local club but they have not passed on a capitation fee to the FNZAS you will not be recorded as a member. PM me your real name and address and I will check my mailing list. Don't remember getting any new names from Palmy though. For those who wish to subscribe by direct credit, here are the details Bank: Westpac Branch: Levin Account: Federation of NZ Aquatic Societies Number: 030667 0263933 00 You MUST let me know if you are doing this though so I can check it with the treasurer, otherwise it may be some time before I know you have paid a subscription.
  13. Well I use www.photobucket.com but there are lots of them out there.
  14. Jeez krib. Either wipe the card or get another one! They would have been good pics! Fins crossed for them
  15. Hmm new one on me. Can't help sorry.
  16. I think you're right newt but hard to tell with such a dark pic.
  17. It depends on how well the tank is made and what sort of surface it is sitting on. We lost a tank with a very small quake once but it was enough to crack the base. We got up in the morning to water everywhere and fish lying on the gravel. Managed to save most of them though as we had the new tank (the one pictured in the tank section) set up and had been going to add the fish that day anyway.
  18. Hi and welcome FG. Perhaps you would like to tell us a bit about yourself in the Introduction section? Don't know if your idea would work. I doubt it could cool anything enough but have no idea, never having tried such a thing. Not sure I would want material drawing water out of my tank either
  19. Sorry to hear about your fish.
  20. and who has the patience to milk their microworms? You need a really short stool.
  21. I'm sure I am responsible for the breeding. They got all excited at having their photos taken
  22. I would not put 2 silver dollars in anything smaller than a 4ft tank. Of course they can start in a smaller tank but will outgrow it.
  23. A plecostomus is totally unsuitable as it grows way too big for a tank that size. The rest are all fine for beginners. The pale fishes with no eyes are blind cave tetras. I would not put guppies in with tetras as the tetras would tend to nibble the guppy tails. Minnows can go in heated or unheated tanks but the rest are tropical. At this time of year though they would be fine inside without a heater (assuming it is around 18C). All (except maybe the guppies) will go together. They will all eat the same type of foods.
  24. There is no such thing as a cold water guppy! Guppies can tolerate a wide range of temperatures and can be kept at room temperature. That is what is referred to as a cold water guppy. Not so cold, just don't need a heater in a modern, well insulated house. There is no difference between them and any other guppy. They should never be sold as cold water guppies!!!
