  1. Hi Ira, yes I think you're right. We have a large cigar shark in our tank in reception and it looks exactly the same!
  2. Hi Jammos - the male silver dollar has a red tinged anal fin which could be what you're looking at. I have two silver dollars - a good site to go to for info is: http://fishprofiles.com and search for your breed of fish. Hope this helps!
  3. Thanks Dawn, I tried the lettuce again last night sinking it to the bottom but they actually avoided it as if they were scared of it! I don't think they know that they are silver dollars and vegetarians! So far no luck but I will keep trying all your suggestions! Cheers, Angela
  4. Thanks for the advice Wazza, will definitely try the pegged lettuce! Cheers. Angela
  5. Wazza, my silver dollars won't eat from the top of the tank and I can't understand why! I have tried floating lettuce, spirulina flakes etc and they just don't get it! We have named our two silver dollars Paris and Nicole because I swear they seem to have left their brains behind - love em dearly though. Staplez, they have so far been great with our other small fish - we have clown loaches, tetras, a fighter and some guppies and they pretty much leave them alone which is good.
  6. Yes, I was warned not to add live plants which I had been looking into so I have steered clear of that. How big do they get? I have a 190L tank - hope this is okay I have no other really big fish, only clown loaches, tetras, guppies and a baby fighter.
  7. Here is one of my new dollars!
  8. Hi, I have two new silver dollars that I have introduced to my tank. They are both about 7cm and I think they're great (she says like a proud mum). They are beautiful fish and while shy, at least they are not harassing my little tetras like my Angels did. These silver dollars do seem to be a little bit slow though... I can't seem to get them to feed when I add flakes to the tank - they don't really feed from the bottom so the most they are getting is the odd flake that just happens to fall past their faces! Any feeding ideas (or general care as I am new to this species) would be appreciated! Thanks. Angela
  9. Thanks Staplez, good advice. I think that's exactly what i will try and do! Cheers.
  10. Thanks Caryl I thought as much! I think it'll be farewell to the Angels!
  11. This growing plants business sounds complicated! But I am going to give it a go. Thanks for all your comments. One further question - I was talking to a fellow yesterday who said that my undergravel filter (with powerhead) may not be suitable for growing live plants - has anyone else encountered this? Secondly, off the topic.... I introduced a siamese fighter to my tank last night and my two angelfish (demonfish if you ask me) are giving it hell... I love the look of my angels but their attitudes are getting on my nerves! Other than getting rid of them has anyone got any ideas on what to do? If only there were obedience schools for fish!!!
  12. Thank you both, have to go shopping on the weekend! From your responses it seems that there aren't 'particular plants' suited to 'particular fish'. Thanks again! Cheers
  13. Hello, I have a 190L tank currently with 3 clown loaches, 2 angels, 6 neon tetras, 6 bristlenose catfish and a siamese fighter. I have about four fake plants which look okay but I would like to give my clown loaches a bit more foliage to hide in and thought it would be good to start having live plants as I have heard they are better for the fish. Any ideas or recommendations of what I should get and where in Christchurch is best to get them from? All advice gratefully accepted! Thank you. Angela
  14. Thank you all, I have not been to Redwood or to Organisms yet so looking forward to the weekend! Thanks again.
  15. Hi - any advice on where the best place is to buy tropical fish from in Christchurch? Currently I go to the one on Stanmore Rd - Critter Kingdom.
