  1. How are you going to stop it floating?
  2. That very much depends on the fish you add. Goldfish are a chunky fish and notoriously messy eaters who poo a lot. I suggest you take the tank bits along to Julie at Decor Pets (tell her you have been asking questions in here and that Caryl sent you ) and ask her what they are for. I am sure she will be most helpful.
  3. A crack in the middle of the base spreading out in 3 directions sounds like uneven surface to me. What was the tank sitting on? It only takes a tiny speck to set of a crack like that once the weight of the water is added. Maybe an uneven surface the tank is on?
  4. Undergravels are fine with plants, as long as your gravel is deep enough (at least 5cm) Angels will harass the fighter as they love the long flowing fins. I would remove either the fighter, or the angels
  5. No one should have erythromycin or augmentin in their medicine cabinet! If you have been prescribed these drugs it is important you finish the whole course!
  6. From your description I would wonder if it is a true aquatic plant. More likely to be a bog plant. It may not last too long totally submerged. Quite a few bog plants are sold as fully aquatic and some adapt better than others.

  8. I will be able to find out the details at the weekend as I am staying with the FNZAS treasurer and she will be able to give me the account number 8)

    Hey.

Hi and welcome. A lot of us meet in chat most nights around 9pm. Check out the trade section too.
  10. There are some plants which are more likely to be eaten by herbivors or damaged but not with the fish you mentioned. Pick ones you like
  11. all you need is the ham to go with the green eggs. I didn't know they were green! Cool pics, even if they look a bit, at first glance, like an anti-smoking campaign  Looking forward to fry pics.

    New Tank Pics

I am no expert (only had my camera 6 months) but have found you need plenty of light in the tank, get the camera as close to the glass as possible, keep it as still as possible (tripod if possible) and I like taking pics at night with all the curtains closed and room lights off to stop reflections.
  13. When I saw them I thought they had been dyed! A gorgeous fish and looks great in a large shoal.
  14. Organism, corner of Ilam and Clyde. They are very knowledgeable on plants and also have a great range of carnivorous ones! Try also Redwoods, Hussey Rd, opposite Willowbank Wildlife Park Critter Kingdom, Stanmore Rd and Blenheim Rd (2 shops) Petworld, Smith St (I think). You could also pop into Animates at Papanui and say hi to scalare who works there.

    hello all

Welcome aboard Lynnz. May I suggest you join the North Shore Aquarium Society? Kim in here is their president and she works at Pupuke Aquariums so next time you visit there, introduce yourself.

    Angels

Not a stupid question at all mystic. Angel babies do not develop their distinctive shape until a bit later (about a month if I remember correctly. It is a long time since I had angel fry).
  17. I thought I had seen them for $25 - $30 in ChCh.
  18. Bilbo how upsetting! It will be interesting to find out what caused the leak.

    Dropsy

Here's a bit more... Symptoms This disease is characterised by a swollen or hollow abdomen. Swollen areas may exhibit a 'pine-cone' appearance caused by the fishes scales sticking out. Fish may also appear off-colour and listless, and may stop feeding. The swelling caused by this disease may often be mistaken for a pregnant or egg-carrying fish. Gouramies and Cyprinids (barbs, danios, etc) are prone to this disease. Causes Dropsy is a condition with several possible causes. It may frequently be caused by internal infections by a number of different bacterial species. Viruses have also been associated with the disease. Poor water quality and/or diet may trigger the disease. If the problem has been caused by permanant damage to the kidney, then treating the infection will not eradicate the symptoms. Possible cures This disease must be caught early to maximise the chance of saving an affected fish, and even then the disease is difficult to cure. Previously, antibiotics prescribed by a vet were the only means of treatment for those countries where antibiotics cannot be purchased over-the-counter. There are now commercially available remedies which may help. These include Interpet #9 Anti Internal Bacteria and Waterlife's Octozin (can we get this in NZ does anyone know?). The addition of salt (1 tsp/gallon) may also be beneficial. Dropsy is not usually considered to be particularly contagious, so it should not spread to other healthy fish - dead fish should be removed immediately however, to avoid cannibalism. However, bear in mind that there is more than one cause of dropsy, so in some cases the infective agent could be contagious. It is preferable to carry out treatment in a hospital tank where available.
  20. They are gorgeous those barbs but I have not seen them selling for that much!

    Ehoh!

Hi and welcome MA. Are you coming to the BBQ on Saturday? Quite a few members from here will be there and it is great to put a face to a name.

    Dropsy

They look like a pinecone and the othre fish catch it when they eat the infected fish.
  23. It is likely though Shae whether directly or indirectly.
  24. I know there is debate re the fat content of white worms. I know that when I was given some leopardfish they were on flake foods until I started a white worm culture. Thinking I was being kind, I fed them white worms every day and it quickly killed them. They were fine up to that point. This was about 18 years ago. Of course, like us, fish like variety so a treat of worms once or twice a week is sufficient. The problem with tubifex (wild caught that is) is that it grows in polluted water (loves sewage) and you can kill your fish with the bacteria and parasites introduced with the live tubifex.
  25. Hang on while I find out the account details for direct credits. I will have to contact the FNZAS treasurer (who is in here under "jane") Yes, joining an affiliated club means you get the magazine and free and club fees are sometimes cheaper than the magazine subscription.
