  1. Thanks Shae. I knew the gold (should have added it I guess but couldn't remember how to spell it and too busy to look it up) but didn't know the other.

    sagittaria

Just let it go Jude. Cut off any bits that grow where you don't want them.
  3. Yes my son kept whitebait for a couple of years. A very pretty fish actually. My dad called them all Patty...Patty 1, Patty 2, Patty 3 etc
  4. Here's a couple of fish pics from Chris's place in Wgtn. Not up with killi names but I am sure he, or Alan, will be able to name the species.
  5. I have mailed plants successfully. One way is to put them in a ziplock type bag slightly blown up so the plant doesn't get squashed (no water needed) and put into a bubble bag, or into a ziplock bag as before and put into a small carton. Fax modem boxes are a good size for this
  6. That is the reason I suggested he not get discus for at least 6 months when the tank has truly settled.
  7. Sorry I don't know how to post a link to the original thread but it was in Freshwater and called Native Fish not exotic enough? on page 10. The guy's name is Charles. He hasn't posted in here for ages so don't know if he is contactable or still keeping natives.
  8. The more plants you have, the more secure the fish feel and will stay out in the open more readily.

    barley straw

It takes at least 6 weeks to get the required bacterial action, or whatever, going. Have patience.
  10. Someone in this site actually breeds kokopu or some native species on a commercial scale if I remember rightly. Can anyone tell me who that was? He was complaining more fishkeepers didn't 'go native' but conceded it was hard to set them up with the right conditions. Might go have a search through old threads...
  11. This happens a lot with female guppies in my experience. Not sure of the cause but guppies don't usually get swim bladder problems. That is more likely in the weirdly shortened deformed looking fancy goldfish Separate the female and if she looks like she is in difficulty, floating her in a breeding net (if she doesn't object to it) or separating her in a tank with a low water level would lessen the stress of trying to keep her upright. I have had them recover from this. A lot of surface plant like watersprite may give her something to rest in too.
  12. My fish are always more active after a water change - and always act like they are starving for that matter.
  13. OK since no one from that club has replied so far... Kapi-Mana should be meeting January 26th at 7.45pm at 20 Mexted Cres. Tawa. Club fees are $20 family or senior or $10 juniors and senior citizens.
  14. Cycling a 4ft tank with 40 neons is not a good idea. Too many fish at once.
  15. Just filling the tank with water and turning on the filters will not cycle the tank. You need to add fish, or do a fishless cycle using ammonia. It is my understanding discus prefer a matured tank that has been established for longer than 6 months minimum. I don't think any discus are easier to breed than others of a different strain. Mid sized schooling fish go well with discus, like cardinal tetras.
  16. I'm no expert on plecs but I would say common too.
  17. It is certainly a good magazine scalare. I have quite a few of them here myself. The good thing about the Aquarium World is that it is aimed specifically at fish keeping in NZ and has lots less advertising

    umm...

I am forever having to trim my plants and have never used fertiliser or CO2. If you want spectacular plants then you need one or the othre but if you are happy with plants that just grow, then don't worry about it.
  19. We always have tons of polystyrene as all our computer parts come packed in it. I hate taking it to fill the dump and it is toxic if you burn it.
  20. Perhaps they share a common ancestor - an Oompaloompa
  21. They glue it up for you. You buy it as a ready to go tank, not as 5 sheets of glass
  22. I think if you are very good at weekly water changes you could put another dwarf gourami in there once the nitrites etc have dropped again. I wouldn't add schooling fish like tetras as I feel they need more length to swim in.

Interesting colouring in the first pic.
