  1. Hi there, I have 9 fairly large (all between 12 and 18cm) pond fish (fantails, comets, lionshead, oranda) which I need to find a temporary home for whilst we move out until our home is rebuilt. I've found a ratio of 4L for every 2.5cm.... is that suitable for goldfish? There will be plenty of plants and a heck of a lot of filtration! Cheers
  2. Not heavily planted. I have a water iris and lily which have been pretty quiet over winter. The pond is pretty large for 9 fish and it's been topped up a lot recently - my waterfall has a slow leak which prompts me to regularly add fresh water - ingenious, I know! And we've had a lot of rain recently... Perhaps that explains it?
  3. So, I had the water tested the other day and it's perfect. ph = 7, ammonia = 0, nitrates and nitrites = 0. I've put her in a quarantine tank and have treated with Wunder Tonic. Fingers crossed this clears it up. Thanks for your help.
  4. Hi Alan and F15hguy, Thank you for your responses. I have 9 fairly large fish (comets, blue fantail, calico fantail, white fantail, Lionshead, oranda shubunkn) in a 700L pond in CHCH. I have never had an issue with water quality (over last 2 years) but I have to admit that I stopped checking as it has always been perfect (I do a water change fairly often and have an excellent filtration system). My bluey is the only one who has been affected so I don't think it is related to poor water quality but I will get the water tested tomorrow and let you know the parameters. F15hguy - I treated bluey in a quarantine tank so melafix hasn't been near the main filter. Again, thanks for your time, I'll post tomorrow the water paras and will treat the whole tank with wunder tonic. Cheers!
  5. Does anyone know if wunder tonic is an effective treatment or is there something better? Thanks
  6. Thanks a lot. Should I continue with pima/mela combination @ recommended dosage for a 7 days? Or should I try Wunder Tonic as the mela/pima combination hasn't been successful? Or, can you recommend an alternative treatment? Cheers
  7. Hi there, My blue fantail, below, has had a fin condition for the past couple of months - can someone please give me some ideas on what it is and how to sort it out? I have given her 2x 7 day treatments with Pimafix (2.5ml per 20L) and Melafix (2.5ml per 20L) combination but it doesn't seem to be clearing it. Should I be treating her for longer? I also have Wunder tonic but have not used it on her. I was also hoping someone would be able to view the white growth on my Lionshead (below)and tell me if it's normal. I believe they are related to Orandas and this could be normal. Also, can someone tell me how to show images in a post! Thanks a lot!! http://www.flickr.com/photos/85201186@N ... hotostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/85201186@N ... hotostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/85201186@N ... hotostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/85201186@N ... hotostream
  8. Isn't potting mix too nutrient rich and stuffs up water clarity??
  9. Madness. So they just need something to weight them down?! Thinking about it, I can see how that would work with the ranunculus as they put out so many 'roots' to pick up nutrients out of the water. But you reckon lilys only need to be submerged? Can anyone else verify this?
  10. Thanks a lot. Do lily's not need any 'soil' type media? Do you know if river grave can be used for ranunculus? Cheers
  11. Hi there, This is the second time I am re-potting these plants. I am trying to source decent clay soil in CHCH area as the topsoil I used previously is too fine and end up 'disappearing'! Does anyone know where I can get some from? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers
  12. I'm pretty sure its a male.... unless she likes playing chase me charlie! I'll sit tight for time being and monitor. Thanks for all your advice! BTW, cleaned out canister filter the other day and it was infested with mozzies! Can I prevent that from happening somehow?!!
  13. Have tried to get close up but the images I have already are the best - seems that close up pics don't show the spots like pics 2 ft away. First and last pic shows the spotty discolouration that wasn't there a week ago the best. Any ideas as to why he sits under the waterfall? Agreed, not keen to separate fish if infection has spread. Have you used melafix? Can you recommend any treatment that is not harmful to plants? I know it is beneficial to ID issue first but to me it could be; fungal, bacterial or natural changes as you said. I have excellent filtration, nitrates an ammonia levels almost perfect and have a UV component to my filter. Cheers!
  14. Thanks for your replies. Spots have been there for a week or so and I have noticed a spot on one of my orandas. He's been involved with spawning and his behaviour has changed recently as he is now sitting under waterfall all the time - maybe itchy?? What all round fungal/anti bacterial treatments would you recommend?
  15. Hopefully this works! He's the white fantail w yellow head: Have thought about buying tub but filtration will be a hassle... ideally I'd love to drop medication into pond with as little mucking around as poss! Thanks heaps!
