  1. Welcome back. How have things been with you?
  2. I found this when someone asked if they could use beef heart to encourage growth in their goldfish. I don't know if it is correct or not... It's safe and will provide some nutritional value, but to be honest it's not really the best source of protein for fish. Your fish will be better off if you avoid meats from warmblooded animals such as beef, chicken, pork etc and feed from coldblooded sources such as insects and other fish. Things such as shrimp, clams, etc also fall in that second group. It's a fine line and a small detail, but the amino acid balance is far better in the coldblooded sources of protein for your fish. Many Discus breeders have and continue to use it as part of their fish's diet and it works, but only as part of a very well balanced diet and only when superior products are not available. To feed beef heart you will need to get the hearts and remove all of the tough membranes, valves and other tissues like arteries. Then chop it very fine or place it in a food processor and basically turn it into course hamburger meat. you can then feed small bite sized pieces of this tot he fish. I can be frozen in a fairly thin layer to preserve it and help you with portion control.
  3. Nice eyelashes Extra posts removed 8)
  4. Hmm, perhaps candles and a little Barry White might help 8)
  5. Lots of people use recipes with beef heart. Some fish you don't feed it to as it causes bloat I believe. It can be part of a good balanced diet for fish.
  6. The people who use ammonia to start the bacteria do so with no fish in the tank. They also use pure ammonia, not the stuff in the supermarket which has additives.
  7. I am sure they can manage to mate by feel

    Vegetables

My peas are the frozen minted variety. I just save a few from tea then give them a light squeeze to opo them out of their shell and drop them in.
  9. Sounds like fun. Might see if we have plans that weekend. If not, Taupo here we come!

    Fish dying

I looked it up on the work database for all meds available in NZ. It is not in it. Co trimoxazole is trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. This combination used to be called Apo-Sulfatrim and was deleted Nov 2004 but is also found in Trisul.

  12. and here's me thinking it akin to Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler's sausage ina bun  (Gotta be a Terry Pratchett fan to appreciate that)
  13. White and cloudy can be a bacterial bloom. Harmless but unsightly. I avoid doing too many water changes during summer months when the water table is low as I find it sets off a white bloom. That might just be our local water supply though  Should clear again on its own hopefully.

I wondered about both but Tim has been making tanks for years so I doubt the silicone is a problem. I would not have thought the cycle to be that much upset as when the tank cracked they immediately transferred all quickly to a spare tank and the filter was up and running again very fast.

Herbivorous and omnivorous fish will eat an assortment of fruit and veg. Be aware of sprays though and wash it thoroughly. Tougher foods, like cabbage, need to be blanched first to break down the cellulose a bit or they can't digest it well. Oscars love bananas My BNs eat peas and cucumber Many fish like lettuce
  17. I would have thought they would be fine in Auckland.

  24. Some of those swords are more delicate than they look and it doesn't take much of a nibble before they are holed
